NEW YORK (Reuters) -- In a continuing effort to exploit its franchises, New Line Cinema has greenlit "Freddy vs. Jason."

Brad Renfro will star alongside Robert Englund, who'll be back for his eighth performance as Freddy Krueger, Variety reports.

The studio hasn't yet decided on the actor who'll play Jason Vorhees, the lumbering maniac from the "Friday the 13th" franchise who will be making his 11th appearance onscreen.

Ronny Yu, the Honk Kong veteran whose credits range from "The Bride With White Hair" to "Bride of Chucky," will direct the picture, with shooting to begin September 9 in Vancouver.

The film's premise is a simple collision of legendary evildoers who've each racked up impressive body counts of promiscuous teens.

Renfro ("The Client") will play a character who finds himself pitted between the two combatants, and so his mission is to try and stay alive until the end credits.

"It's clash of the titans, the ultimate showdown," said New Line production president Toby Emmerich.

"Freddy is the intellectual manipulator, Jason the killing machine. When you have done 17 movies between these characters, it is hard to stay fresh, but putting these characters together makes it fresh.

"There is a hard-core fan base for each, and we will be out in front of 'Predator vs. Alien' and 'Batman vs. Superman,' other films putting venerable characters against each other."

It is the studio's second significant franchise move since "Austin Powers in Goldmember" posted record summer numbers last weekend.

The studio just hired Troy Miller to direct "Dumb and Dumberer," the "Dumb & Dumber" prequel that will hit cinemas next summer.

Corporate sibling Warner Bros. meanwhile, is mining its own franchises with plans for Wolfgang Petersen to direct "Batman vs. Superman."

New Line Cinema is a division of AOL Time Warner, as is CNN.com.

Finally! This has been in the works since the mid 90s when the nightmare franchise ended, but script issues always held the project back. Good to see it's finally green lit, the Nightmare On Elm Street series are one of my favourite series of films eva! :) Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Can't tell by my avatar though eh?

Bella - when i first saw the original exorcist all those years ago i was very young, & it scared the living shit outta me. i went & saw it at the movies when they remastered it, & it was a full-on comedy - i was cracking up all the way thru it :)

back in its day, the exorcist was the movie to beat :)

back on jason vs freddie....
i never liked freddie too much - the nightmare on elm st flicks never seemed to do anything for me. Jason on the other hand, although there are some crap ones, was usually entertaining. i think it was part VII? Jason takes manhattan was my fav - he got a nice shiny new machete to play with :)

IT sucked. Blew great big dirty chunks compared to the book...

Evan - the movie is NEVER as good as the book. Especially when they're produced by the company that Stephen King owns.

Still, even though your own imagination is a pretty scary tool, it's the actual visuals that do my head in! When I'm reading, it's still in a book and, while I'm imagining as I go along, the details are hazy.

Jason is a machine. I used to love it how the terrified victim could be bolting through the woods while Jas casually strolls after her only to somehow get in front of her and hack her to bits.
First film to give me nightmares was Watership Down (twas only a lil tacker at the time), followed soon after by Jaws 1.

Then later, Freddy 3 scared the piss out of me and put me right off horror films (particularly Freddy for a long time) .
Got back on the horse after watching a midnight screening of Jason 1 at home by myself. Became hooked on the series to become ever more disappointed with each installment. The 'Final Friday - Jason Goes to Hell' was awesome. Gotta love that last scene where Freddy's glove drags the mask under the ground....GOLD!

After working up the courage to watch all of the Freddy's, I had missed the boat and thought that they were all pretty lame. I just can't respect an undead psychopath who quips Arnie-like one-liners before a kill. Thats why Jason is great, the actor does not need to worry about remembering lines, resulting in more focus being dedicated to character's inspiration for each scene.

For a real scary movie you cant go past the original Hellraiser....that is some fuxked up shit. Clive Barker is a legend. I also enjoyed Nightbreed.

But as far as I am concerned bring it on....how much can Hollywood milk out of this franchise that is long past it's useby date. RIP?.......Never.

yeah, acturlly i dont like grotesque horor one.like too much blood that kind of thing.

Tales From The Crypt........magic.

Amazing stories are in a similar vein (without the bloodshed), plus old school stuff like Alfred Hitchcock Presents...

Lets not forget about classic horror portrayed in Evil Dead 1, 2 & 3 (Army Of Darkness).
When Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi team up it's always champagne cinema.

Dancing Girl:

I'd actually disagree. Stephen King books are (imho) written in a simple yet discriptive way that usally leaves things clear cut. Part of the reason I like SK (plus all the Dark Tower tie ins). Plus IT was something like 1300 pages which would have translated into a 7 or 8 hour movie minumum, and they cut it down to two.

I can deal with dodgy production. Its completely shithouse story telling I cant stand.

I read IT only bout 15 months ago and I still found it scary.

I used to be a huge horror film fan in the 80's when these films were around but I got over it all when the Friday the 13th's & Elm Street's ran out of ideas. I'm appalled that this is going ahead. It can only be a complete load of crap really!! Haven't seen more than a couple of good horror films in the last ten years. (Why do they always have to add comedy?)

Personally, Psycho is the greatest horror film ever made. Incredibly well done. The ending is SO disturbing & unexpected. Hitchcock was THE SHIT!!!

not really being a fan of the whole 'horror' movie genre...

exorcist was pretty good, nice and tense, and awesome characters.

the poltergeist definately is my fave.

but, the scariest movie i've ever seen has to be moulin rouge.

haha i love damien! :) i watched the omen recentishly - think it was on fox a month or so ago. it didn't have the same effect it used to either.

horror ages, we get older & harder to scare, wiser & are able to somewhat predict what's going to happen or may happen in a movie (well i usually can anyway) & so are prepared for anything i spose. haven't had a movie scare me for years. a couple have made me jump once or twice but thats it.

btw, Friday 13th - Jason Goes to Hell is on #9 right now.

Not a big fan of the 80s horror movies, however ...

I'm very excited to hear the prospect of seeing an Alien vs Predator movie is still very much in serious consideration ... If anyone has seen the script thats been floating around the net for a few years or the novel, they'll know how kick ass it would be.

And that Batman vs Superman, sounds good as long as it follows the dark horse style from back in the 80's ie. no campness in batman, he's totally gone psychotic actually.

I have been a Jason fan for as long as i can remember. No.1-6 were good but then they lost the plot, especially in no.9 i think. Magic knife my ass, but i guess there has to be some way to kill him i guess but that was just Hollywood crap. Just admit that jason is one bad ass mother and leave it at that.
Freddy scared the shit out of me when i first saw it when i was about 7 or something. I think what made the first movies of both freddy and jason so scary was that 80's look in the film. The quality of the picture was nowhere near as good as it is today, and so they looked liked a home movie somewhat. Just go and see the Texas Chainsaw massacre (original) to know what i am talking about. Thats messed up!

I Think Jason should win, but what is the story line going to be. I feel it will be pretty cheesy in order to create a link between these to horror icons, which as it stands, have no connection.

Wasnt there a game brought out on playstation or something called 'Freddy vs Jason'?

I knew it was on but didn't watch it. Even if it isn't that scary watching it at night by myself would have no doubt made me paranoid about some noise outside.

I was reading in NW  that Freddy (who is trapped in hell) sends Jason to Elm Street to continue his chopping spree. The problem is that Jason doesn't like being told what to do...

They also talked about the Alien Vs Predator movie and that they will "trade blows on a near-future earth".

Hellraiser 1 scared the fuck out of me. Twisted shit that is ;)

I haven't seen Jason I don't think, Freddy used to be scary especially that one where he puts the cotton bud thru that guys skull and drops pins when he's got supersensitive hearing... hmm was a long time ago.

Jason and Freddy both suck... I don't know whether they made me laugh more than scream - give me Pinhead or Linda Blair (The Exorcist) anytime...

04-Apr-03, 10:11am
Yeah... Pinhead kicks ass over Freddy or Jason. Hellraiser really creeped me out... not so much the movie but the concept behind it. I've still got to read the books yet.

If I had to pick tho... definitely Freddy. Jason wouldn't even see him coming...
Dunno how they would actually fight though seeing as Freddy exists in dreams and Jason never sleeps cos he's dead... ;)
And to whoever mentioned the Evil Dead films... good pick! You can't go past Evil Dead 2 for a hack 'n slash shocker.

Freddy would kick Jason's arse. Jason's just a big dumb gimp in a ski mask. Freddy can traverse the divide between the conscious and unconscious worlds plus he's got razor's for fingers.
