View Full Version : taken dj names
well recently ive been thinking of a dj name, mainly for myspace and if im able to get a club gig anytime soon.. and theres 2 names ive thought of which are already taken by one dj in britain and the otha in germany, by searching the name on google.. both of the alias i came up with go along with my surname so its pretty annoyin that theyre taken..
would it really matter if i used the same name UNLESS i was goin to become famous and start producing songs or djing at famous festivals? im sure there are another 1000 people world wide using the same dj names. maybe i think of it as a graffiti thing where you dont graff the same word as someone else .. lol whats your opinion!?
just do it. Tiesto is a type of vacuum cleaner in mexico so you should be ok

Just do it... unless they're well known or mainstream in the style you want to play just do it..
easy way to deal with the issue would be use your own name :P

Just use it, unless you absolutely become massive then there won't be any problems. Even then who says you didn't think of it first?
i have used Special.K since the late 80's and i know of at least 11 other Special.K's around the world and the only issues i've had was with a trance DJ who thought he was a tough man, twat!
mind you i'm sure kellogg's will catch up with me one day if i keep telling the ladys "i'll keep them looking good"!!!!!!!!!!!
You could register your name as a business if you really want to!

If I used my real name I would look like a real cock, as there is already a big international DJ / Producer with my name. But I hate Aliases.
In Melbourne there is Sean Quinn (been DJing since I don't know when - maybe 15 or 20 years) and there is another muppet running around called Sean Quincy (might be a nice bloke and good DJ, but let's call him a muppet for now).

the best move is to makeup a name/word then behave in such a way that you develop a reputation which no one else would want to be associated with and hence think twice about using the same name

if you use someone elses dj name, they are within their right to stab you.

I still don't understand what is wrong with peoples own names personally.
Does your name suck balls?
Over half of the most famous DJs in the world are just John Digweed, James Zabiela, Steve Lawler, Richie Hawtin, Danny Howells, Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Burrin...the list goes on and freaking on.
Why make up some tardo name?

DJ Dean? defnatey do not call urself that, even if there wasnt anyone else called that! first names preceeded by the 'DJ' prefix are fucking lame... even worse are first names followed by the first letter of their surname... Alex K? Jimmy Z? gross...
my dj name is just my nickname, no real need for the DJ prefix. Peeks sounds ok enough by itself

i agree it's silly but when i started playing i use to use Special.K for the hip hop gigs and i use to use Kieren Lewin for the commercial clubs. at that time most of my friends called me Special.K anyway (i got the name in primary school) so it seemed reasonable to play under it. as time when by I changed music styles but kept using the alias "Special.K" and it got to the point that people only recognised my name on advertising material if I used my alias. these days after playing under a alias for over 20years has kind of got me stuck using it.
if i could go back to the 80's and do it all again then i would just use my real name but that's life and i can't say i really care as long as I get to play tunes!
Kieren.

Do your research... Paul van Dyk's real name is Matthias Paul (and Armin's surname is spelt van Buuren)
