alright basically i'm going to be shopping for one soon,i was wondering which one is good & not too pricey?
I basically want it to do things like the techno dj,s do ie: Space DJ'z - last dj'z on earth mix cd,all the different effects they do throughout their mix,& also the grindy sound ( what a great description)..Hope ppl out there can help, thanks
the two most populat effects units are the pioneer efx500, and the korg kaos pad. each has their own lil advantages. the 500 has the ability to effect each frequency band (low mid hi) individually and you control it with a jog dial. its a pretty cool piece of kit. the laos pad has a much better control tho, its a touchpad like on a lot of laptops, pretty crazy stuff u can do with it. its also got an 8 second sampler built in. the kaoss pad is being replaced right now with the kaoss pad 2 which has so many insane features like 2 samplers, synth/drums, more effects, etc. go to harmony central (http://www.harmony-central.com) and watch the video of the KP2 and you'll see how clazy that thing is. kinda glad i didnt buy a kp1. but that said the kaoss pad 1 will be on special soon as its being replaced so you should be able to get one quite cheap. same goes for the efx500, the replacement hasnt been announced yet but i have it on good authorty that it'll be announced soon and on the street in 6 or so months. maybe wait until both new units are out and then choose from 4 units!
check these sites for more info on both:

I have had a KP1 for some time now & love it to bits!
This has been the most well used piece of equipment I've ever owned. Friends borrow it all the time too (on the very rare occasion I'm not using it). There are so many applications where this is the king, from Djing to live to recording, to mucking around & freaking out your pets (very good with a theramin)!
Can't wait to get the KP2.

i have an efx 500 they're pretty good i'm starting to get a little tired of mine might look at selling it soon and get a kaoss pad or something not sure theres also the air efx by alesis which works on the d beam principle like the mc 505 and the likes which has some kool efx
gav, the airfx is pretty weak, its effects are rather average and its biggest downfall is that it is affected by smoke, be it cigarettes or from a machine. other then that great concept.
stanton has a new one out that uses a trackball to control it. havent got the 411 on that tho.

i onced played a gig with an airfx
didnt realise id knocked it on its side... it had been effecting against the side of a keyboard for about a minute before i noticed the sound was distorting
crazy things
we're getting a Kaoss pad2 soon, mainly because of the tempo matching with fx.
i will keep using the kaoss 1 though, because i love it.
sometimes live i will use its sample feature on a sound or vocal or sample (routed via the Auxillary Send of my mixer)
theres two sample effects i like on it
one is the start-stutter effect, the other is the one which controls forward/backwards and speed
anyway, the KAOSS pad is a creative tool but as far as the quality of its effects go, they arent fantastic. so if you want a 'bread and butter' kind of Fx unit (ie, to use for all you fx needs) go with something like a second hand lexicon or something
if you want a 'toy' that can be very creative and fun, check out the Kaoss pad
also if you want AWESOME plug in effects packages DO NOT go past WAVES
i bought them a while back and they are unreal, and every studio ive worked in has a Waves package too
unreal, and the Ultramaximiser is something of a standard now anyway
