I'm looking to buy myself some speakers to mix on, however I am a comletely inexperienced n00b when it comes to them.

I'm looking for something small with clear sound, however doesn't need to rattle the windows with power.

Thoughts and recommendations?

Thx

HS80s are overkill for a n00b

^^^^

that's about as sensible as your last suggestion ... HS50s would've been the sensible step down ;)

I have HS50m's and they are a great set of monitors. Just under $600 a pair and they go loud enough for any sized bedroom / lounge room. A mate has 80's and they are great but a bit more expensive. I'm very happy with mine.

M-Audio BX8a is a studio monitor with a nice sound. It is a very bassy speaker for a monitor, and quite loud. It is probably not the best choice of studio monitor for actually producing.. but for DJing, it will handle higher SPL's than your standard speakers and you will not need an amp because they are powered monitors; so its good.
I recommended some to a mate and he absolutely loves them, its a nice balance between a speaker thats accurate and a speaker that is impressive sounding.

Pretty much all monitors and especially cheap monitors are powered. (Truths, HS series, KRK's, Studiophile's, Alesis etc), And all speakers mentioned so far in this thread are powered so thats kinda redundant.

personally i don't like most studio monitors to DJ on, i figure it must be something to do with them being to precise, though it could just be me!
i have a couple of Acoustic Technologies LG03 & a LGB04 for my console at home!

i would highly recommend going to a couple of shops and trying every box out until you find one YOU like, We all have different ears! And if you do so leave your wallet at home so you don't get pushed into any perchance you'll regret later!

Yep.
Also, if you get a studio monitor you will not need to get an amp as they are often powered themselves.

i have fostex PM2 monitors. Big speakers big power big sound. Try the 0.4 smaller version and if they sound anything like their big brother you will be more then happy.

Go to a shop and test drive a few different ones before you buy anything.

I use bheringer truth's. Most people here hate them, although they've been known to catch on fire. No trouble's here yet. They sound fucking awesome and they pump too so that's good enough for me. BTW, I came from logitechs too and a dodgey casino bar sound system :P

A pair of bookshelfs for around $500 - $700 and a velodyne subby for around the same price.

Magic!
