View Full Version : How much will you pay for a record?

TheReturn
26-Nov-08, 09:57am
I just payed over $80AUD (not including postage) for a 12 inch record and i'm feeling pretty guilty about it.

Its a present for someone so I guess I can kind of justify it. Although - when you're paying that price - you kind of wish it was for yourself.

In theory I've always said i'd pay up to $300.00 for a record, but so far i haven't seen any that I consider to be worth that price.

Whats the highest you've ever paid (or sold) a record for..and how do you justify it.

I sometimes take the tracks that are $2.99 out of my beatport cart because I just cant justify it.....

sorry

I paid about $400 for a really old Santana record for my old man once. It was a collectors item though and its something my old man and I indulge in alot (many many first press copies of classic albums in that blanket box :thumb:)

i've paid fifty.. not much i know, but i just haven't come across any tunes i'm willing to pay more for... that doesn't mean i wouldn't if i did though. i'd probs pay about a hundred for a single tune, but it'd have to be a pretty incredible (and rare) tune.

I paid $3.50 for 3 records from an opshop yesterday. Some old disco, motown and a 1985 compilation with Ghost Busters Theme and Agadoo on it :thumb: Now that I've got serato I usually just buy unusual or old records from op shops / markets because I can usually get the digital download. If I felt I NEEDED something - I would probably pay $80 for a 12" but it would be for myself and no one else...:daftpunk:

The most I have paid is $60 and it was worth every dollar. I would pay pretty much anything if it was something I really wanted to get and there was absolutely no other way of finding it. Once I need to hear something I become obsessed with it and wont stop craving the sound until I hear it :rainman:

I paid $75 on ebay for the original press of Delerium - Silence with tiesto's in search of sunrise mix and the sanctuary mix 12"

it was also signed by tiesto in gold marker from when he was in melbourne in 2003 or 2004 new years?

Only annoying thing was it didn't have it's orignial sleave, it was just a white cardboard sleve with tiesto written no it and tiesto was written on the vinyl itself too, but it didn't have the original cover :(

was gona frame it but just ended up selling it to someone else for $50 :S

Jamx and De leon: Blue monday $60 From the US

Because i have the iDJ2 the only vynil i buy is collectors vynil of my favourate artists and songs. The most I've paid is $100 but i would be willing to spend alot more - it just depends what vynil it was. I would buy an expensive vynil for someone if i knew it was absolutely what they wanted and that they would cherish and make good use of it :thumb:

Great track :thumb: Not sure I'd pay that much for it, but I guess it's a bit different if it's a present and you don't have time to wait for a bargain.

Highest I've paid for records:
Crazy Gang - "We Are The Crazy Gang" album, US$70 2 years ago
Blackway - "New Life / Follow Me" , US$80, but check the prices on discogs http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?release_id=327004&ev=rp :rainman:

Most expensive record I sold was a Belgian euro-disco/Hi-NRG 12" for 75E.. it sold in 25 minutes on discogs 8) (I paid $10 for it)

I payed a lot for Northern Exposure vol1 (but not as much as some), is got pricey because it was long out of print. 2 weeks later is was released again - i wasnt overly happy when i could have got it for a fraction of the price.

Saying that, if i want a record, i'm mostly happy to pay for it.

don't buy records anymore... i don't see the point in forking out $20 - $30 for 1 song that in this day & age is bound to have a shelf life of only a couple of months, when i can pick up the same tracks for $2 on beatport etc.

well the way i see it, since i switched away from buying vinyl i have saved myself thousands of dollars yet got so much more good music.

I know having records is nice and there's the sentimental value of having a track that you've always loved on vinyl, which i have plenty of my own (i bought records for years before finally going digital).

But as far as DJ'ing goes, i find that aside from the standout tracks that you always like, most tracks i get generally only get played regularly for a month or two, since i'm always getting new music and trying to keep my style evolving, which for me is what i love about DJ'ing. Playing the same tracks for too long gets a bit boring for me and i find that if i stop getting new music i get bored with the tracks i've been playing and end up not being arsed to mix.

So my whole point is - if you like to get lots of new music, unless you're prepared to fork out a couple hundred dollars a week or fortnight on records, digital is the way to go.. but if you've got the money and the desire to buy all ur music on vinyl - more power to you.

Dj_Godspeed
09-Dec-08, 09:56am
Most I've paid for a record is $45 for 'Shock Me' by Audio Punk & Stereo Junkie...only cause I couldnt find a digital recording of it anywhere...I'd probaly go up to $100 for a record, but anything over that is a bit excessive IMO.

You can still get to hear lots of new music with vinyl, you just have to go to a shop and sit there for a while and listen to tracks before parting with your hard-earned.

I think buying digital music en masse kinda defeats djs from acquiring the necessary skill of learning music and developing their own style - because its so cheap, you can download everything under the sun and it not cost you all that much whereas if you have to part with $20 per record you can be damn sure you'll like it a lot more...this is reflected by the many clubs you walk into and the guy is playing the BeatPort Top 10 of {insert chosen genre here}

Agreed and Also, buying vinyl isn't just about buying "new" music. While you may pay $20 for a new 12 inch, you can find 4 or 5 old 12 inches for the same price if you know how to dig.

Digging and coming across old stuff you don't know is half the fun of collecting and Djing vinyl.

Not dance vinyl, but dearest one I have is the original 'Grinding Halt' 12" by The Cure, rarest one they released at 1000 copies. 120 Clams in 1996, ouch. Had a look at it the other day for the first time in ages though and brought a smile to my face, so I guess it's cool :)

Northern Soul 7"s are notorious for going at ludicrous prices.

but look at the flip side of the coin ... if you picked one up cheap somewhere sometime ... you can now cash in on those willing to pay such insane prices :geek:

i recently picked up a record i liked the sound of which was an unknown artist and had absolutely no info on it except the label name ... very very rarely would i pay $27 for 2 tracks (there was 2 on offer but i only picked up one as i already had a slab of vinyl) .... but i loved the sounds on it so much i bit the bullet and grabbed it.

I dropped $150 bucks on a limited edition pressing of Idioteque by Radiohead many years ago. The track is still current and it now sits nicely in a minimal set. It rarely comes out of the sleeve and is treated like gold.

At the time I put up a forum post about it and I was told to invest in hardware instead. I'm glad I didn't invest in the hardware because it would probably be obsolete by now.

The music lives on.

That being said there are plenty of shitty pieces of vinyl in my collection I wish I didn't spend 2o bucks on! Some of my friends have huge collections of hard trance, hard house, which compared to today's standards, doesn't compare (production wise) and is completely lacking in value!

Just make sure that what you're buying is quality and hopefully it will stand the test of time!

can't recall the most I have paid for a single record, but it's prolly around $80...

if it's a classic, and I don't currently own it I am generally willing to hold out till I see it at a reasonable price... I am pretty fanatical about quality tho... so I have double ups of some rarer tunes...

I also tend to bundle a lot when getting them second-hand from overseas to save on postage...

Agreed.

I paid $60 for Uberdruck - Radio Waves from the UK, and $50 for Sam Punk - Whores.

No regrets, they were tracks i just had to have. There's nothing like going to the post office, getting your new tracks and racing home to give them a spin. I'd rather wait a week for new vinyl than wait 2 minutes for digital downloads, but that's just me...
