View Full Version : Are you in a Flat/unit/apartment?

If so, how do you cope with the whole DJ setup thing & the noise you make? I'm about to move into a unit in a complex in the good old trusty Valley, and didn't really think too far ahead in terms of noise levels. The place is 80% people under 30yr olds (so I'm told) so I can't imagine they'd complain toooooo much. The point is, I'm a nice guy and hate having people coming up and telling me to turn my shit down. Now, I don't even know if it's going to be a problem yet because I haven't inspected the apartment to check for wall thickness etc.
The complex is Cathedral place, for all you Brisbanites here. It's walking distance from my work, walking distance for my other half and walking distance for my bro (bro and I will be the occupants). Plus, it's ACROSS THE FUCKING ROAD From practically EVERY club and bar brisbane has that's worth going to. I CAN SEE THE FUCKING MONO, BIRDEES, FAMS, EMPIRE! EPICCC!!! :hooray: :hooray: :hooray:
ahem, back on topic.
So yeah. Anyone have a solid as a rock apartment where they can just go nuts? what sort of noise restrictions do YOU have? Any info on Cathedral place would be good too :)
I put this in the DJ section because it's primarily to do with dj setups in restricted environments.
my last apartment was great. I had a room in between my bedroom & the living room & I had the whole end of the building. I've had music going all night at a very reasonable volume without any complaints from the neighbours or people upstairs
Unfortunately the new apartment isn't so good for noise but I have a studio now so I just go there to make noise

:(
fuck your studio. I want one!
I live in a pretty small apartment. Haven't really had the volume up all that loud just out of respect for other tennants I guess. I should just belt it out one day and see what happens. I also try not to have a mix when its after 9pm at night on weekdays, dont want the police and shit rocking up, who knows what else they will find haha.

as zodiac said, i usually keep the noise down after 9 and just mix in my headphones.
we tried having a flat party one night in winter, had all the windows closed and everything. it worked great until ppl got drunk and started spilling out onto our small balcony for a smoke. we lasted until 2am before the head of body corporate came and complained...although we think he was dirty that we didn't play any kylie
I lived at cathedral place for a year.. in that time i used to mix pretty loud every night or second night and never had any complaints. just keep your balcony door shut otherwise the noise echoes all around the whole complex. the rooms are really soundproof tho. i had other people on my floor who used to crank the music really loud as well, in the hallway you can hear it but go back in to your room and you can't hear a thing.
the only complaints we had was from getting home from empire at 5am with about 10 or 15 people all off their guts on the balcony being really loud..

the best time to belt it out is when you're pissed, definately. then you can abuse the neighbours who tell you to turn it down, abuse the police when they show up, and then end up being famous when you're on an episode of "Cops".
i live in a 2 bedroom unit in a block of 8 units and never had any complaints.
one time i was having a big party and we gave the other units a slip of paper under the door, which stated we were having a party and if we were too loud to msg us (we put our numbers on there)
in our drunken state we went a level up and borrowed 2 shot glasses, and when we returned them i asked the dude if we made much noise, he said he couldnt hear anything
i was using my krk rp6's for sound, and ripping it out, and no complaints.

I live in an apartment and we have used a PA system in there haha. We play a lot of loud music late and never get complaints. The acoustic padding is generally pretty good in the walls of apartments these days. Just keep all the doors and windows closed.
yeah cathedral place is fine, as mentioned the complaints that you get are about having kick ons with lots of people there/on balcony. big complexes like that have really good soundproofing, its the peeps mucking around on your balcony and in the hallways that you gotta worry about.
Im usualy mixing in headphones all day long lol. ocasionaly turn up some speakers and stand outside for a sec, and you just hear the distant thump of bass, nothing realy to worry about.
cathedral plbrag post imo :P my cuz lives there and i stay there every time i visit bris. it's fucking party central dude. as wadza said, don't worry about noise unless you're out in the balcony. also, there are like pool parties and drinking outside in the common area every night. own!!
anyway, i live in an apartment also, and have only once been told by neighbours to turn it the fuck down. it was 2.30am on a wednesday night. fair? yes. i am up at night 2-3 times a week writing tracks til 3am though, and haven't been bothered since that one time, but don't crank it up loud anyway.
it really depends on the neighbours tho. my friend has had issues even just from talking loud with windows open. if you have cranky wanker neighbours you're bound to get some trouble.

I live in a townhouse, with my bedroom (and mixing room) sharing a wall with the neighbours... I generally turn it down around 11, but only ever got asked to turn it down by my old neighbours who were old... i told them to just turn their hearing aids off.
These days the neighbour is a milf. she loves it

Nothing better then a desparate MILF. They usually let you do anything.

yeah in an apartment these days, i've got a decent sized place though, with a spare room that acts as my studio and that room is in the middle of my apartment so it has no common walls with my neighbours. Also helps that i've got the corner apartment on my floor so i'm pretty secluded from the neighbours anyway.
So i can get away with playing music just about as loud as i used to when i was in a house in the 'burbs.
I've had one complaint before though when apparently my music was making the dude downstairs roof shake, so i turned it down a little and it was all good. Since that complaint i've got myself on the bmc anyway so next time someone complains about me the complaint comes to me anyway :P
Get nightshift work, mix all day.
Safe!
I live in the ACT in an apartment on the top floor in deakin
never have any probs!
crank it all day!

im in the process of moving from a house to an apartment..
still trying to figure out how loud I can be without pissing people off..
also trying to decide between dedicated 2.2mx2.7m DJ room or leaving the decks in the lounge.
lounge = much better when people are around.. probably pisses the neighbours off slightly less.. but if the missus wants to watch the box she'l have to put up with the music
dj room = going to get cramped with more than 3+ people, but at least can always spin there and it seems like a good room for a hot box/dutch oven..
also at home I was running KRK VXT8's with a 10" sub and it sounded fantastic because there was a lot of absorption in my room.. at the new place, in the lounge at least, ive been listening to just the VXT8's and i've had to cut the bass a few dB!
wish I had the 6"s now :)

woah thanks for the input guys. I'll let you know how it all goes. ;) I can't believe I'm STILL at home! hahaha
I'm seriously considering downgrading my monitors. I have the rokit 8's and I only ever turn one on as its too loud otherwise. Thinking of getting some 5 or 6 inch moitors and see if its any better.

I've lived in a few. Friendly neighbours is the key. Not always something you can plan on but do your best to get on their good side when you move in :)
For mixing purposes i have a speaker setup at ear level only metre away from me. I can then have it nice and loud for me without needing to fill the whole room with sound. It comes off the booth output. I have a separate system (master out) to fill the living room if i just want to sit on the couch and listen to music.
