Probably not the best story, but the first couple of mix CDs that told me to go buy gear and try and do that were a Bass Kleph promotion cd, and a steve lind promotion cd.... wierd, because I don't really play the sortof music they play... This was all about a year ago.. maybe longer, I loose track of time.

As above, I was always producing music but I had fuck all idea about what a DJ did and I was curious. Started listening to sets and stumbled on Sven one day. I fell in love with his sound.

Now I have such an extensive knowledge of all things techno / deep and I owe it all to Sven.

Grandmaster Flash. WOW!

Over the 1.5 hours he played, he probably played about 75 tracks. Some only for 20 seconds. Hit after Hit. He had the crowd in the palm of his hands. Total domination from the time he arrived out of the darkness to the drum beat of 'In the air tonight' by Phil Colins!

ROBERT MILES - CHILDREN. Off a CD I got for christmas called Smash Hits '96. I was only 9 years old and I secretly loved it. I used to think it was weird because it had no lyrics but was such a beautiful song. Oh also that song Nightmare - Brainbug. Haha, those were the days.

Took me a while to get into the DJ gig from there but that's basically the gist of it.

Oh wait, a mix that got me there? No Idea. At the moment, suprisingly enough the one DJ who is currently inspiring me the most is Danny T. Local DJ in brisvegas. No superstar but I always look forward to his mixes .

I didn't really want to DJ in the first place, I thought the DJs actually performed the tracks they were playing with drum machines and stuff, which is what I wanted to do somehow. Then one of my mates bought turntables and I learned that was how most DJs performed, blew my mind haha. I think that was what inspired me to start getting into it, makes it a bit easier getting gigs anyway.

16-Dec-08, 04:57pm
To be honest... none.

I used to make compilations on cassettes for mates in the mid 80s when I was 14. Then I made them for inner city house parties in the late 80s. So really it was a very natural progression to do something similar in bars, parties and clubs later on but with better equipment.

Laurent Garnier, Mr Scruff, Tom Middleton and Norman Jay I do dig however, mostly for their taste and eclecticism.

i actually hadn't thought about it but i started here too.

I'd record tape to tape (dub even) , pausing the tape i was recording as soon as possible after the track had finished. As i knew the tape player let a bit more tape through when i did this, i'd take it out and wind it back a fraction so when i dubbed the next track it would kick in with not gap after the last one.

But as far as being inspired by DJs go, Brisbane's Acidisco events with Pip and Kazu around 2000/2001 is where i became intrigued with the beat matching aspect of DJing. Previous to that the clubs i was going to essentially had the same DJ playing all night and just dropping tracks .. a mix of grunge, indie, hip hop, industrial and chemical/big beats.

Another inspiration was Katch who'd regularly play upstairs at Rics in the Valley during the hey day of big beat.

Walked up the stairs stoned as fuck into a crazy scene that ended up with peeps climbing all over the stage and dancing...a chick who later told me she was bi-polar and part Apache (or Navahoe) was dancing above me on stage while I was looking up and she started flashing her red knickers at me during Dsico's mix of Nelly's 'Hot in here'....that was prolly it..

[I skipped all the obvious bits about childhood experiments with tapes n such cuz I'm not a wanker :haha:  .."Yeah I was into dub in the womb man"]

Whoever says Hebie Hancock's 'Rock it' either gets a Gold Star or a punch in the nads depending on being able to prove said claim; agreed?

.

Yeah I used to do this, but i'd record scratch samples in between the tracks. I wanted to be like funkmaster flex.

But what made me really want to DJ was "brainfreeze" by Shadow and Cut Chemist. They utilized so many techniques to make a really interesting and exciting set. I wanted to know how it all worked.

A. Refered to Lee Scratch Perry song as Soulwax song; FAIL at validating name.
B. Yes I'd think so (see kids he kinda just said "I'm very aware of the history and usage of of ball")
C. Trolls have no purpose apart from causing grief; I'm acting more like a playfull lil rascall...plus rule no 1. from even way back in the Newsgroups days was "Don't fee the trolls" and you're older man so viz; you don't regard me as one at all but are a willing participant in a cunning game of wits....that you're being beaten at...

tsuyoshi suzuki - 2001 Room 680 - psychedelic techno. best shit ever. pity he dosen't mix tracks like that now :(

Serious! Couldn't believe it. Even scarier is the ease at which he did it - his hands barely moved... if dj'ing could be 'graceful' then Jeff epitomised it.

Just as scary was watching Will-e-Tell do the old reverse record trick - stick a post on the turntable, pop the record on top so it floats about an inch off the platter. Then Will sticks the arm underneath, flips the stylus upside down and plays the bottom of the record backwards. On deck 2 he has the same record playing normally forwards.

End result is the two tracks at once, one forwards, one backwards - shoom-kick, shoom-kick...

:hooray:

I think the turning point was when I was about 16 or 17 working in a resort bar/kitchen, and the manager had Fat Boy Slims Beach Boutique II playing on the plasma in the bar.

I remember my amazement watching 1 guy playing records to 250,000 people. And I've always loved the horns in his 1st track of the mix: Tim Deluxe - It just won't do.

So I think that's when I took the interest. Then I moved to Brisbane and loved the nightlife and got a job as a mobile (Wedding / School Social) DJ and met a cool guy who introduced me to CDJs etc and him combined with some of the local Brisbane talent got me more and more into it. Brett J, Habebe, Murray Brown, Baby Gee etc.

I think the Beach Boutique DVD was when I first got inspired, but I continue to get inspired every time I go out and see a good DJ, local or international.
