View Full Version : Oldskool Sydney mixtape collection

Over the recent xmas break, I retrieved from long-term storage in Melbourne a couple of archive boxes containing mixtapes I recorded from 1992 onwards.

I had them sent home (Tokyo, now), and, lucky for me, my wife's father has sent me a fantastic Sony TC-K75 3-head cassette deck, which I believe dates from 1979, and was state-of-the-art back then ... perhaps it still is, as far as cassette technology is concerned.

If only I had recorded these tapes on equipment and cassettes of commensurate quality. But of course, I didn't. All of these tapes were recorded off FM radio on the ghetto-blaster in my bedroom, and the recording quality is variable, to say the least.

But don't let that put you off. There are some gems here. I think most of what I have is new for this group, and might not have seen (heard) the light of day for many years. I'm going to try to upload all of it over the next little while so that this golddust is preserved for all to enjoy. There seems to be a bit of a cult following for this kinda stuff on Facebook too, so I'll repost there.

There are a bunch of mixes from E-Clipse (more on that awesome show in a sec), as well as from Musiquarium and other less well-known programs such as Technogroove, Trance Addiction, Looney Tunes and some others. Some of the tapes are less mix and more tracks-du-jour + interviews with the key players - but I'll load 'em up too and let you guys judge what you want to keep. The collection then evolves into some early JJJ mixups - 1995 or so I think. I guess this is the appropriate forum to post them, unless you guys have any other ideas or suggestions.

It's going to take a while for me to get all this out, but I plan to post something every day or two. That may be ambitious, but let's see how we go. Before I start the deluge, I want to say thank you to all of you who have loaded up the mixes over the last couple of years. You've brought back some great memories! And hopefully helped grow interest in the music. Thanks too to the deejays who pioneered this scene!

First up is DJ Sugar Ray's mix on the last E-Clipse broadcast. For those of you that missed out on E-Clipse, I reckon it was the best thing going on radio at the time. Each Friday night, two deejays would do an hour each. They would mix what they would play at a club or party that week, not just a collection of anthems or big tunes.

The E-Clipse presenter was a bit of a legend. Does anyone out there know who he is or what he does these days? To my knowledge, he never announced his name, even on the broadcast when he deejayed. I have kept his intro / outro so you can get the full flavour.

This set is different from the Sugar Ray E-Clipse set previously posted. This is early 1993 trance - trance music from before trance became a dirty word. Much appreciated if anyone could tell me the name of the track that starts at about 30:06.

If anyone out there has other E-Clipse tapes that have been long-ignored, please post them up! Especially from the first half of 1992 - prior to my collection unfortch.

Cool! :thumb:

No idea on the ID, but I know that mix... complete with the Tremora Del Terror into American Natives.. which back in '93 I had one on vinyl, the other on CD, where I used to (attempt to) recreate the same mix between the family's CD player and rudimentary (but hey, it was Technics, and had a pitch adjustment) turntable, into a Radio Shack mixer... good times!

Wasn't it Jumping Jack hosting E-Clipse?

And anyone remember what MArk Dynamix' show was from the same era, before he got a real following when Sublime launched in Pitt St

And didn't Jimmy Z have a pretty decent show back then, before he went HiNRG Oxford St stylee, and ZOOM turned into Byblos?

Ah, the early days...

Cheers for sharing. There's not much E-Clipse (or any radio show) on public archive. Facebook had the archive of every Sydney oldskool tape under the sun that was ever shared in the now defunct SYDNEY OLDSKOOL group...

...not sure what's happened since SYDNEY OLDSKOOL became a registered trademark. :(

Spectrum (and others), glad you enjoyed that one. The cool thing is that this was probably the first time that we heard some of these tracks, which of course went on to become huge hits. If Ray was playing it, then chances are it was still fresh.

Jumping Jack use to team up with Abel on Trance Addiction, maybe that's what you are recollecting. E-Clipse had JJ on a few times (I'll post one of his E-Clipse mixes very soon) but the host was definitely a different gent.

Indeed I do remember the Dynamix show, from before he could get a gig, in fact I may have a couple of tapes of it. There's also a few tapes of a show called "GST", from way back before the fiscal burden was inflicted upon us >>> I think this could be the Jimmy Z show. I'll have a listen.

I've had some issues posting to oldskool.com.au facebook ... ie I can't do it ... perhaps because I am not a member of the group. I posted to The Definitive Mixtape Collection but it looks like it's near-death.

A couple of more E-Clipse mixes, from late February or early March 1993. Both mixes are from the one broadcast, but I only caught the last hour or so.

The first is a short (10 minutes) of Quest vs Imposter:

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?zlnyytwdgdw

The second is the full Jumping Jack mix. This mix is different from the Jumping Jack mix posted previously. Lots of very cool late 1991 / early 1992 stuff here:

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?zlnyjkzmm41

The quality of the recording was not great. I've had a go at removing the hiss, but for max effect you're going to have to turn it up to 11!

I'm using the DeNoiser effect on Steinberg Wavelab v4 to reduce hiss. v4 is old now but I don't have the update, and it works fine for my other purposes, like recording mixes from vinyl and editing my mistakes out. The QvI / JJ tape had only been recorded on the left side, so I copied that onto the right to balance it out. The recording was very low volume too, so I turned the volume up to max on the mixer (and it still didn't get anywhere near peak).

If you have any suggestions for improving the quality, let me know, as some of the other recordings I have, especially anything from 2RSR, are sub-optimal.

The good news is that the other E-Clipse mixes that I'll post are all better quality, so I'll record them au naturel.

Another E-Clipse mix from early 1993. This is courtesy of Belgian new beat and techno legend Frank de Wulf, who appeared at the Chapter 2 party, which as I recall was actually inside the meatworks at Graffiti Hall? (or was that Chapter 1 with CJ Bolland?)

What a shame that FDW left the music industry to concentrate on his multimedia business. Interestingly, he talks a little about his other interests in the interview during this set.

Can anyone ID the very first track (ie before the announcer speaks) on the mp3, which gets mixed in to Eden's "Do U Feel 4 Me" after about one minute?

MentalCube

Next up is the Ming D E-Clipse set that followed Frank De Wulf's mix. It's the Sydney rave sound of early 1993. Amongst the many highlights is Ming's MC-ing ... "The North Shore Posse rules the airwaves!"

DJ Abel was the E-Clipse DJ of the year for 1992 >>> this E-Clipse mix shows why. This mix is different from the Abel mix previously posted. The whole set is very very good, but the opening is particularly cool.

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?q2ycyzmct55

DJ Crisis did the second hour that night. I only taped the first 15 minutes or so, but here it is anyway. There's also an interview with the promoter for the Prodigy 3 rave, which was on that weekend:

Next is Paul Holden doing a mix on E-Clipse as a promo for the Field of Dreams rave in early 1993. This will remind those of us that remember of Stun's golden era! (... and, indeed, Field of Dreams). The interview with Paul follows the mix.

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?zzoywjmi3wt

The legendary E-Clipse host himself did the second hour that night. Some great progressive house sounds from that era, eg labels like Guerilla, Limbo, plus a few party favourites.

Fanatik1 >>> thanks for this background / memory jog. Corroboration of your info may be all but impossible now, but definitely synchs up with what I can now recall. I remember as the show was coming to its close, Gary sent a letter to 3Dworld in a last-ditch attempt to get a sponsor. I think he mentioned how many listeners he had (based on the number of calls) and how much money he personally had sunk into the show (maybe $15k?).

Certainly a prescient guy though - it wasn't too many years down the track that alcohol, tobacco and other corporates were lining up to sponsor the big events and the scene in general.

I've been looking for a particular Fenix tape for years and years and still no sign! I lost it/it was stolen in about 1995 and I haven't been able to find a copy anywhere! Maybe you have a copy??

Any luck? Any help would be so greatly appreciated!!!:violins:

re Pee Wee : there was another mix called Eclipse Radio Pee Wee Pt 1. I'm no expert, but I must say that this mix didn't really sound pee wee-ish to me. It kinda lacked that bounce that his 1992 sets had, and some of the mixing wasn't true to form. There's also an ad for radio skid row at the 24 minute mark. Next up is DJ Arthur's contribution to Technogroove's radiothon, probably 1994, but maybe 1993. This recording will not go down as a classic of the genre ... but you do get to hear a rare snapshot of what Arthur was playing. The highlight, for me anyway, is the first track (before Arthur plays) "An Aeronautical Trip Into Higher Skies", which would have been #1 on the Technogroove Greatest Hits cd if there ever was one.

Cool will have to dig up the Gemma.

The Pee Wee Eclipse Pt1 I'm pretty sure was Pee Wee but not entirely sure it was Eclipse. That's what it had labelled. Agree on the bouncy it did start slow & tribally for a while but did get bouncy with Cascade Do What You Wanna Do, Jemm 77 - Can U Dig It.
That's it for Pee Wee from me I'm afraid!

Here's those ones if anyone still wants them, they're still up thanks to Phil.

Thanks for the track ID! What a top b-side, taking things in a different direction from the a.

I'm glad you're enjoying these sounds >>> please up the gemma mix >>> I too had that one but it's disappeared with the sands of time. I've a few more (John Ferris, Sugar Ray) from mosaic 1994 that I'll post as soon as I can.

re Pee Wee : there was another mix called Eclipse Radio Pee Wee Pt 1. I'm no expert, but I must say that this mix didn't really sound pee wee-ish to me. It kinda lacked that bounce that his 1992 sets had, and some of the mixing wasn't true to form. There's also an ad for radio skid row at the 24 minute mark. So, if that wasn't Pee Wee - then who was it? And, if you've got an Eclipse tape by Pee Wee, is there any chance of an up?

As an added bonus, George does some MCing and calls for listeners to ring in their requests (so I guess it must have been live?). If you're listening out for the harder tunes, it's only the last 10 minutes of the second part.

I'm glad to hear you are enjoying the memories! Unfortch I think I taped over the rest of the Pee Wee set - at least I can read a scratched out "Pee Wee" on the Paul Holden tape I just posted so I'm guessing that was it. Of course this all dates from a golden era when buying cassettes would have put undue stress on an already stretched budget.

However I think I have Pee Wee's 1995 Mosaic Mix - but inexplicably on VHS tape and I don't have access to a PAL machine up here in Tokyo. The same tape also has John Ferris and Phil Smart written on it. So it might be a while before that one gets mp3-ed. I do however have, on audio tape this time, his 1996 Mosaic Mix which I'll fire up once I've blasted through the rest of 1995.

Yes, sadly I have to agree that Vagas mixup was pretty shoddy, the mixing was ordinary at best. I guess that's what happens when it's live. It was, however, the only recording of Interceptor 17 that I had (the one that rips off the bassy riff from Gat Decor's Passion) and I really liked that tune. It took me 10 years to identify it!

Gidday, glad to hear you're enjoying these sounds. I have quite a few 1997 recordings, which I intend to post once I've ground through the 1995 and 1996 stuff. There are a coupla Nervous tapes, including a party called Transmission 3 that was broadcast live from sublime on JJJ (I caught a few deejay mixes from that night ... but it might have been 1998?) as well as at least one of his shows on 2SER where he had Spellbound mixing it up. Also, from 1997, City Express shows (the host was ex-Technogroove's Patrick, who must have taken over from Sugar Ray and John Ferris), Insight (mad diverse show with guests like Mark Walton, Abel ...) and best of all several recordings of a show called Stateside which was also a great club night at the Tom Tom Cafe or whatever it was called at that point.

Taking it back..nice.

I just want to say that I once had a tape (120min chrome too) of the 808 State show recorded in Manchester in 1993, which was the absolute bomb, Yolanda/UR Livin 4 the Night, Jaydee Plastic Dreams just after it hit, Roach Motel, heaps of mad shit, but a chick called Kylie who was the first raver I ever knew borrowed it and never gave it back.

Thats it, no link, no nothing..enjoy the thought. I will have a look for any old tapes I may have from Melbourne circa 1992-1994 before I got into buying music myself. May have a couple of gems!

Perth's DJ Kriece mixing up hi-nrg sounds on JJJ's mixup, 1996. Some of the tunes lack a little oomph now, but for those of you that rocked Q-Bar in the mid 1990s - and I know you're out there - then this may bring back some fond memories. As Jean-Claude Van Damme once so eloquently put it, sometimes you like to have a little cheese with your ham.

I'm not sure. I remember recording a tape from Brendon that would have been 95-ish. All sorts of piano house like Lovestation 'Love Come Rescue Me' etc. Never heard the happy hard part though. Pavo was definitely 96 though, maybe Brendon had another go in 96?

I've got a couple from 98/99, but mostly of touring internationals. Bit of a shame really, because in retrospect the local talent was as good if not better, and definitely now more interesting. Plus, it's easy to hunt down sets by big name deejays from that era, but not so easy to track down local product.

Also in there are a few big day out recordings which may be of interest. And, several jungle and drum and bass sets (Dave Edwards, Kayla from Australia, and big names like SS, Rap, Grooverider) - not sure if anyone on this forum is interested in that sort of stuff?

Was Lily/Jilly a Perth deejay?

I'm going to take a break from the uploads for a while, as I'm relocating and those boxes are presumably somewhere in the Pacific. I'll be up and running again in a coupla months time.

Just signed on to this forum to say cheers to for posting the HMC Triple J sets; they brang back very fond memories of many great nights out. I have a different Triple J set by HMC which I'm pretty sure was from earlier than 1996, and it is VERY good, probably the best set I ever had from back then (classic HMC: from groovy US House to storming Techno over the two tapes), but it is only on tape, not MP3, and yours truly is a little low tech in the converting over department.

Got this from a friend, however it still misses 14a and 14b. Also I don't know if there's any tracks between Pump This Party and what is probably an Elation track, Thiefy Boy was mixing very quickly that night! Heh, I ID'd track 19 when I got it on vinyl ages ago, can't believe I missed that one. I'm having trouble verifing the other IDs Andy, I can't find clips of them on the internet. May have to take a punt and buy them on vinyl.

Scott Brown Vs Vegas – Lords of Hardcore (’96)

[QUOTE=MentalCube]Carl Cox's triumphant return to the JJJ Mixup in 1997 >>> this is a wicked mix of a bunch of different styles mixed with that energy that Coxy is known for >>> does anyone remember the party at Sydney's Skygarden about this time with the one-off line-up of Carl Cox, HMC, Will E Tell and Sugar Ray? great party >>>

Hi, this is one of my favourite sets, had it on tape but it disappeared...

Have noticed the above u/l is in mono (sorry can't post link), does anyone know of a stereo version going around?

cheers,

Michael

What, no love for a newbie ?? Surely someone else loves this set, listening to it the other night was awesome (even in mono) - it brought back so many memories...

I must have lost the first 2 sides of this 9 years ago, the 3rd side about the same time and then got sick of the last 45 mins - I listened so much !! I have been looking for years for this and after finding it the other night on this thread I was so happy!

It was weird, even after all these years it was just like I listened to it the other day..

Anyway, if anyone has this in stereo please let me know, I am really stoked by some of the linked mixes in this thread, it is really keeping the heritage of these sounds alive, it is a shame people like triple j don't step up and make this stuff more available - not only is it our musical heritage but I would pay top dollar for a release of these mixups in a high quality format - triple j are just sitting on this stuff and the people who love it can't get it !

Anyway, rant over!:thumb:

Regards,

M

Michael: I contacted Triple J a long time ago in regards to this and they do not have archival recordings of the majority of mixups! Such a damn shame... They need an oldschool special to showcase the great music that used to get played :)

Thanx for the replies ...

I remember hearing or reading something once about how all licensed radio stations are something like "logged transmissions (?)" and that they all get recorded somewhere... triple j had their mixup by request so I'm sure they must have them somewhere... I called them up along time ago myself inquiring about this mix and was told that it is not for public access - but it did sound like they still had the ability to get them.. still, even if they do exist getting them released might not ever happen.... ah well:violins:

Cheers,

Michael

I have the full broadcast. It was actually replayed as a classic set on JJJ. So damn glad I caught it... I lost the original tape. Saw him at the dome that same week... AMAZING NIGHT!

I'll organize getting it up... The set that is..

PS. I WOULD KILL FOR THE FULL Zeitgeist Mosaic 1997 Mix & Bezerk 3 (kryal castle) Mix.
Astoboy played a killer set that night/day...

Should have never given out those tapes!!!! We have all suffered some loss due to this.

Anyway, I have lots of Coxy sets, in case anyone has any special requests.

Hey dywitness, it's quite easy if you have access to...

1: A computer with an audio input & some sort of basic music recording software
2: A cassette player with an RCA output
3: The correct cable (RCA to mini-jack)

Good luck! Which tapes have you got, by the way?

looking for copy of the easter 1998 gig @ Sublime where Armand Van Helden headlined and the likes of john Wall, Nervous etc supported...
I'd recorded just about every jjj ,ix-up from start to late'ish '98 and quite a few crucial Cuts from that era but lost them all in a tragic 'crazed-housemate' incident in Redfern in 2001.
Anyone got the mix-up from around '96/'97 with an Adelaide Hip-Hop DJ (Name might have been Mark???) playing alllllllll the classics?

Next up is Jen-E on the JJJ Mixup in 1995, I think. The first hour of her set was hard trance - Humate/RITM, LSG, Art of Trance then onwards and upwards:

http://www.mediafire.com/?mnjgmnj5nyc

The next hour was hardcore:

http://www.mediafire.com/?zzng1jmnjyu

The last 90 minutes was DJ Thief playing harder tunes. This one has been posted before, I think, but here it is for those that might have missed it (missing about 30 minutes in the middle):

Oh man! What a blast from the past!

I remember doing this mix live in their studios on Broadway... the speakers in there were terrible, super compressed and couldn't hear anything that well... none the less it was good fun!

Peace,
Patrick.
