View Full Version : What do you think of photographers when playing out at gigs?

Talking about the media "Pros" here, though feel free to comment about the fans with their mobile phones and compacts...

I've been shooting for six months or so, sometimes the DJ's really don't seem happy...

Discuss and make the world a better place!

I dont mind them at all, but when they want to pose with you or blast a flash in your face while trying to mix, then its annoying.

flash photography sucks and should be banned from clubs IMO

IT RUINS MY HALLUCINATIONS

edit: also

PERMANENT DAMAGE
Phototoxic retinopathy, or permanent damage to retinal nerve cells as a result of light energy, has been studied in humans and other animals. Extreme unfiltered bright light, focused onto the retina through surgical microscope lenses has been documented to produce permanent retinal damage.

Pretty certain half the lightng rigs in clubs are more to worry about than a flash. Get one of those 500 watt fixtures shine right in your eyes and you'll know it

Myself, i don't care much for photos at the best of times.....so unless i am smashed i steer well clear of anyone with a camera

Flash is unfortunately necessary for many photogs - we don't all have the luxury of high end bodies and high speed lenses! Definately try to keep the flash turned down, use bounce, shoot from the side, etc.

Plus some clubs are so dark, its impossible to get any ambient light!

I like them, they are just doing their job and might not be wanting to take photos of you either but need to because you're the music man and the centre of attention.

My GF shoots for ITM and she hasn't really had any problems - some dudes love it. She was shooting Tom Piper over the weekend and he loved it was really keen to pose etc which is cool. That attitude makes him seem like a really cool and accessible guy as opposed to some wanker that doesn't want their picture taken because they are too cool.

it's not about being too cool, not everyone like posing for photos

littlebrains69

Well don't pose. Do what you're there to do and they can take pictures of you playing with the flange.

I'm not talking from a djs perspective. Some people just dont like photos in general, especially in clubs. Clubs are dark for a reason, sure if people want their photo taken so be it. But if someone doesn't it's their decision, which should be respected. I wouldnt want people from work seeing photos of me when out clubbing.

gurn with discretion. if you get caught mid-face-chomp it's your own fault.

media should be fine......at the end of the day its exposure, random ppl coming up to the booth just for a photo "WITH THE DJ" would be frustrating

i never know where to look when there is a photographer and i am djing

When i'm shooting, I generally find DJ shots extremely boring and unoriginal unless Im using fast glass, remote flash and/or long exposures or something out of the ordinary happens..

Unfortunately when your working for a events company, taking DJ shots is a necessary part of our job

bounce flash isn't a problem as its.... bounce flash. and usually if you offer a polite PM they can make excellent marketing photos. but just keep you head down, it looks like you're actually doing something too ;)

the problem i have is when people usually pose infront of the DJ booth then their friends use P&S cameras.... that shit hurts :(

i get in, get my shot, use bounced flash if necessary, and then let them be. im sure it would only be annoying if you had someone in your face for more than a reasonable amount of time.

the only artist ive ever had issues with is dj shadow. its not like he told me to fuck off or anything, he just hates photos so performs in near darkness and photogs arent allowed to use flash anywhere in the venue. was a pain in the ass but, meh, hes the act, you cant really sook about it.

I don't know too much about photography but my GF takes piccies for ITM and Faster Louder and a lot of gigs have a 'first 3 & no flash' policy. I think the no flash is a good idea - just means the photographers in the photo pits / getting in your face are using better equipment with lower aperture lenses (and getting better photos) than a bunch of epileptic fit inducing flashes from point n shoot cameras.

But as I said - I'm a poser. If you want a photo of me I won't just pose, I'll sign your bra as well.

Each to their own though, and I do agree that people should respect others wises to not have their photo taken - but being he centre of attention should warrant permission for people to take pictures of you. I think it goes hand-in-hand with being in the position.

I don't mind 'em at all, but don't expect me to pose, particularly if I'm mid-mix.

'first 3 & no flash' policy.

yup, thats the generic international policy of pit photography

'first 3 & no flash' policy

I think I've only had this requested twice, at festivals for headliners, and never at clubs

what is this first 3 and no flash exactly... googled it and it says first 3 songs? so only take a photo of a DJ at the start of his set?

i dont mind photos, depends on my mood. pose sometimes, sometimes I dont. i prefer them just to come and get a shot of me doing my thing and not to not hold the camera for ages before setting up the shot.

I don't mind the photography -
As long as you don't have like a continuous FLASH when your trying to mix/scratch/etc.
Then I guess their just like little flies to a sh*thouse.

I like the photogs, means there's is gonna be adequate photos to remember how hard that night rocked. I'll happily pose to - a good fist pump or silly face while twiddling the mixer is just a bit of fun. but if they expect a pose midway thru a mix, they're gonna be dsappointed.

I would also like to know what this 3 songs business is...

'first 3 & no flash' policy.

I'm reading that as 'first 3 photographers get in, and no flash use'

the 3 songs, no flash rule is quite simple.

at concerts/festivals, there is a gap called a 'pit' between the stage and the crowd. as well as housing security and allowing an escape route for the crowd, this also houses photographers. whilst shooting from the pit, you cannot use flash and after 3 tracks, you will exit the pit.

aiight?

this rule doesnt necessarily apply to club scenarios.

I’m use to it, it’s part of the job and I try to take it in my stride. Mind you if they want to talk to me or ask me to pose while I’m mixing I might get a bit ticked off!

I'm coming into this thread from the other side, as a photographer

Most of the time in clubs I'm shooting the crowd, not the DJ, but when I do shoot the DJ, I tend to try to keep direct flash to a minimum, and and as an amateur DJ myself I know it takes a lot of concentration during a mix, so I don't expect a pose

I prefer to capture the DJ mid-mix anyway, in his/her element, as posing sometimes looks a bit naff, and I use my discretion on uploading pics - sometimes the facial expressions are, well, probably not what they'd want plastered over the net

Don’t put yourself down like that, I’m sure your very “hot”, just ask your mum. And with the right makeup and some heals you could pass for a chick (at least enough to fool drug fucked & drunken clubbers)!!!! Sorry I do find myself amusing at times!

if the dj doesn't seem happy about having the photos taken, don't take them of the dj, or atleast not in their face. if the dj does not mind, and even requests for photos to be taken of them with friends, obviously you would take the photo (or atleast pretend to just to shut them up).

if you want to be cool, definantly take a photo from bird eye view of the dj. facebook material right there..........

Darn tootin' ;)
I cover both sides - DJ & photog (though obviously not at the same time)
Agree that it can get a bit awkward having pics taken while DJing, not knowing where to look or how to not look contrived.
Unfortunately I've seen some douchebag photogs out and about which can have a tendency to make things difficult for others.
