iburna,
I was just in Brisbane last week and I was surprised by how popular hip hop et al seems to be in Brissy. There seems to be a few clubs that are doing bits and pieces. It's always great when you're a fan of one style to have a place that you can call home, but very few clubs find they can get enough business only appealing to a limited range of people all week.
If you're a promoter and you're planning on have a go... good luck with it. I reckon the market might just be there.
yea me and my mate were thinking of opening one up, just seeing what sort of a market is out there for such a club. If we were to open a club up we would prolly only hav it open fri and sat.

fair call
For hip hop check out Drop Zone @ The Moon Bar every Thursday night, also Abstract Message @ Ric's every Friday, The Platform @ Mantra which is a monthly Sunday event and plenty more. There's events such as MiXture and others periodically. There's plenty of events with some of our live hip hop acts and of course who can go past the successfully monthly Urban Method nights.
To date, regular hip hop/ r'n'b clubs have had a lean trot, the market is not massive, often doesn't want to go out and the age factor is often quite cruel, as a fair chunk of core hip hop support comes from the Under 18's.
With hip hop in mind, don't forget to check out some mad ass turntablism from DJ Plus One @ The Platform @ Mantra tonight! This guy's credits include Vestax World Champion, ITF World runner-up and DJ for Uk outfit Mark B and Blade.
See you on the flipside!
And don't forget A-Trak @ The Platform on sat 4th august @ Mantra.. Plus One last night wowed the crowd.. his hands were a blur on the mixer & decks and he showed off his very musical turntablist skills turning rough beats into a song in itself.. he's on another level..
where were u thinking of holding the night? maybe start with a monthly night that doesn't clash with one of the other nights.. share the crowds between the crews and save on politics perhaps..

give it a go by all means, but i personally wouldnt go to a club that played rnb and rap a lot
hiphop/breaks yes, i like moonbar, Rics, places like that, im a beatmaker myself and breaks are my musical pulse.....
thing is i want to dance with people who want to dance
ive found rnb to be too self conscious, a few girls wiggling.... glamour and attitude, lots and lots of attitude sometimes. thats fine in its place but compare Rics when katch is having a great night and you cant go past big fat beats and people lapping it up on the floor.
hiphop, especially brisbane beats orientated/breaks style stuff, would go down a treat id think.
but we have mantra for that.... hmm
my agenda is against rnb, thats all.
keep us updated with what you do! : )
