View Full Version : mixer advice
hey everyone
ive been screwing around on traktor for longer than i care to recall and have finally decided its time to invest in a mixer. i dont want to start small (ie just a basic midi controller) as i know ill tire of it easily. ideally i want something i can get familiar with for a few months before i buy my cd players.
ive been reading into the xone 92 and it seems that its midi capabilites are fairly limited compared with what its actually capable of. the 3d and 4ds look absolutely perfect, but my budget is probably about $1700 for my mixer
ive always wanted to resist going pioneer, because i prefer the mid-hi/mid-lo channel equalisers you get on the 92. but from what i can tell almost everything on the djm800 can send midi data?
anyway these are pretty much the only 2 i have researched, so please excuse my lack of insight, but im wondering if anyone has any tips if either of these mixers are a good idea, and if not what else i should look into?
basically, my criteria is
-$1700 budget (second hand pref.)
-decent midi capabilites
-at least 4 channels
thanks in advance

I have an EVO 5 and cant recomend them highly enough. Aprt from the pretty much unlimited midi controls (can map out over 4600 of them!!!) it is a very well built and designed mixer, and sounds absolutely beautiful.
An EVO 5 is way out of the $1700 price range unless you were to buy from the states, but you would forgo the warranty.
You should be able to pick up an EVO 4 form around $1700 with a bitt of haggling....

A mate of mine bought one recently. I don't really see the absolute need for home use, really. Each to their own though.
I bought a DJM700 recently and am more than happy with it! ;)

I'm not too sure about this as most warranty issues are dealt with Ecler staright from Barcelona, i'd get one directly off them if you can

Congrats on the purchase....but please dont use the industry standard line to every :P
Holden Commodore is industry standard - but you'd rather a Ferrari 599 right?
Nuff said
Solid mixer....but i hate it when people use the "industry standard" tag line
Back on topic
Get an ECLER EVO4 - its an awesome mixer - i have an EVO5.....rock solid and amazing sound quality!

Na my parents taught me in a Falcon. Hyundais are ghey.
Have a look at the Korg Zero 4 or 8. Lots of midi functionality, really good sound quality, inbuilt traktor sound card and they come with Ableton. Not as popular as the Allen and Heaths or the Pioneers but are meant to be pretty amazing. Another thing with these is they have different EQ modes, so although they don't have the 4 band eq that the Allen and Heath's have they do have something pretty innovative.
If i had that sort of budget this is what I would probably be investing in. But i just bought an ecler nuo 5 so this will have to wait.
This have also been showing up on ebay a bit recently, a Zero 8 went for $1250 just today.

Interesting....... MAybe i fell for the sales pitch but all suppliers i spoke to advised me of this. I actualy tried to get an answer out of Ecler on this question, and the answer was very grey. Went for the safe option and purchased locally, got it for $2200 in the end so great bargin!!!!

Why get second hand? Invest in a DJM 800 or if you dont wanna fork out that much money go the basic DJM 400, that thing is more then capable for what you want.
thanks for your input everyone
only reason to go second hand was to save some cash. djm 800s retail for just less than 2200 now and i wasnt keen on spending that much.
dont want a djm 400 because eventually ill be getting cd players /turntables
those evos look damn fine though. definitely going to look into those. cheers for the suggestion

I have a Xone92 and all I can say about it is that it is a sexy mixer. Everything about it is hot, but midi functionality is a little limited.
DJM800 is a good choice but Ecler EVO is optimum for your posted needs.
My opinion is go for an Evo. (Despite my Allen & Heath Fanboism)
Also..... DJM800's (last year) could be had for about $1600ish

A mate last year got his 800 for 1450 from JB, i helped a mate setup the midi in ableton on his and it is very good. If your looking for a mixer for midi its great but i haven't actually tried the midi control on the Ecler.

yeah i have the same sentiments really. love the xone 92, esp the 4 band eq, but im not going to get much in the way of midi control
probably going to save my pennies and go the evo 5, theres not a bad review on the net i can find and personally i think there great value considering what they can do.
