Hardware or Software....
what do u guys see as the pros and cons. Obviously this will vary on what gear your using. I've moved on to software and believe it's much more convenient but lacks the whole hands on effect.....
What are your thoughts?????
p.s. i'm using cubase sx

oh no please dont
no Vs wars please guys, im sure we've all done it before
its all tools... only an idiot would argue wether a hammer is better then a mallet
by the way, anyone else amazed at the longevity of Herbie Hancock?!!
he's STILL releasing albums, and touring with a setup that includes laptops and softsynths!
this is a man to applaud and coming from the most OLDSKOOL of OLDSKOOLS (guys, he was with Miles Davis for christ sake) and here he is fine tuning a Rhodes patch in Reaktor!
amazing.
also for the young'uns who've only ever used software, watch this cat playing an original Clavinet in pristine condition....
fantastic.
sorry to hijack this thread... but you see what i did there? heh heh

I use a mix interface with Logic - a CM Automation Motor Mix. Its' long throw faders make all the difference to fine tuning a mix.
BUT I also use a multichannel audio interface (MOTU828 & Protools interfaces) and mix these outputs through a (very old and cheap) analogue mixer.
Why?
because there's a big difference between turning down a signal in a DAW and turning it down in an analogue board - the difference is bit depth. If you turn down a signal in a DAW you are reducing it's bit depth. - even if it is 32bit floating point internally; when it comes out it's converted by 16 or 24 bit integer interfaces.
If you take a full code signal and then turn it down at an analogue board you maintain your definition and low level detail (stereo, phase, bass response). Yes at the end this information is gone (by the time it comes out of joe blows kenwood cd player), but at least you have it to begin with.....downsizing for format (bit depth, sample rate, quality, poor speakers etc etc) should always be done last in the chain.
anyway - that's my 2 cents.

if i had automated faders id love to do that man... especially if the automation was midi edittable in the DAW (as opposed to real-time memory style)
hell... gimme a big lucsious Neve or SSL while im at it
sadly i cant justify the results"cost ration in favour of outlaying towards a new mix rig
as it is we're building the PD-02 midi controller for Analogik because we're not too fussed about mixing in the analog domain, and dislike using a mouse... but thats another story and business entirely
mackie just put out a new control surface called the baby hui (http://www.mackie.com/Products/baby_hui/baby_hui.asp) list price of 800usd.

I one who doesn't like using PCs for music at all. I need the hands on.........thats my personal preference.
I am excited however by these new control surfaces that give a hands on interface to the PC. I believe there will be more development in this area in future.
The PC has put awesome power in the hands of the musician and I do use it for recording, mastering and burning etc.
It relly comes down to what you feel comfortable with and what sort of sound you want to create.........the possibilities are endless.
ENJOY:)

your certainly right about these control surfaces kaos...
they will be huge which is good because the price will surely drop with so much competition.

what I want is a two channel midi fader box laid out like a dj mixer - eq knobs, crossfader etc.
all ready to plug into protools.
it would be an absolute godsend for dj mix cd's - just preamp the decks to linelevel and plug into protools, then record the mix cd using the midi controller.

oh the fun of programming PIC chips
add to this USB, Firewire, firmware, software and trying to not blow yourself up and welcome to our world
thank god for universities and nerds.... got the geeks to etch our boards for free! bahahahaha
even though we build our own.... anyone used that Tactile surface yet?
OHHH MY GOODNESS
i was like a kid in a toystore whos rich dad had just said "the store is yours and by the way, all those chicks in the playboy under your bed are coming around tonight with three cartons of beer and a nice cabernet sauvignon"
ahem
yeah
its good. i only got a few minutes with it but i decided i want one... RRP and street price and my accountant say different things though :(
