View Full Version : New DJ needing experience
Hey you guys! Happy easter!
I'm Hugo, but everyone calls me Rio. I've been DJing since last year and just moved to Gold Coast two months ago. I've played in a few parties and a couple of clubs in Brazil, mostly commercial house since it's what pull the crowds up there. I'm very passionate when it comes to music and I've been learning a lot in the past few months. I think I'm making real progress, but I still need more club/party experience.
That's why I'm posting this thread, since a lot of DJs frequent this forum. I was wondering if maybe you have some lower key parties I can help you with for free. It's a win-win. I get the experience and you the keen, eager for learning, DJ. I can send you a mixed-set and photo if you'd like to.
BTW: I already have the whole gear: A top-of-the-line macbook, an xponent, 1200 headphones and a pair of monitors.
Let me know if I can be useful. And please, if there's any pointers you guys could give to help me make it as a DJ, it'll be very appreciated.
Another idea: maybe the ITM can come up with a party just as an excuse for us to DJ on it, how bout that? lol
Cheers,
Rio.
happy easter
did you bring the baile?
hahaha! Sure, it's not my favorite but I have some tracks I can share! lol

welcome!
get out there and meet the people and promoters, it's the best way :)
Thanks for the advice quantum. But I'm looking for something more straightforward than that. I know I have to meet the people but it'd be easier if I knew who "the people" was.

No offence, but xponent is shit:P
If you want real experience buy pioneer cdjs, because that is what every club around the world uses.

Quantum put it about as straight forward as it gets.
Get to the events where they play the music you do, find out before hand who the promoter is, talk to that person. Develop a relationship with the promoters and scene in general. Then ask for a gig.
Or alternatively put on your own parties.
There is little chance of you being up to just rock up on ITM, post a thread and get gigs straight away. Brisbane has a lot of great local dj's, so you need to be prepared to put in some serious groundwork it you want to get sets
Remember: Its not what you know, its who you know.

Yeah, I'll definitely do that next time I go clubbing. Sometimes the most obvious thing is the last to pop into our heads. I know that contacts make all the difference, but then again, I just moved here. I'm not asking for a job or anything, I just wanna to get the experience I'm lacking. Thanks Quantum!

None taken. I could try and defend digital DJing, but since I'm here to learn, please enlighten me: Is there anything you could possibly do on pioneer cdjs that you couldn't on xponent? I played most of the time on a couple of 2Ks, and besides the bigger joggs, I don't miss a thing about them. But then again, I'm here to learn.

I can do that! Does anybody needs drugs and booze? ;D ;D ;D

i got teh feeling u were cool, but i know i have had local promoters discuss this fact with some distain. many of the DJ promo crews here are full of loose units, simply go get wankered with them and make freinds; recovery mixes ftw ;) shame, i never made it to casa del chappo -__-

Sup fella, if you're based on the Gold Coast then I recommend contacting Satin Loungebar in Broadbeach. On some Sundays they're letting ppl have a go on the decks, it's unpaid but good if u want bit of experience. I think they're mostly looking for commercial house. Might be worth a shot.

Is that all? Seriously? All right, with my "shitty" xponent I have loops (and they're fun to play with!:) ), lots of different cues on each song, and I don't have to worry about buying nor burning CDs or handling memory cards. Even guys like Carl Cox are using digital platforms nowadays. But, suit yourself bro.

Thanks bro! I'll check that out for sure! How 'bout that place? Is that any good for clubbin?
Ohh... I forgot to ask: How long do you guys think a demo set should be? I mean if you were club managers/promoters, how long would be enough to get an idea of a DJ's style?
And.. would you rather be handed a CD or a link to YouTube with a video of the mix?
Thanks again!
PS.: Do the ppl of the forum get together sometimes? I mean, I love reading the forum, but I'd love to meet you guys on person too.
At least 4 hours and should be on thumbdrives to make our lives easier

Dude, if you want experience of what to use when you play out get pioneer cdj 800's or 1000's;)
they have loops as well champion.
It comes down to practice on what you use when you play out.
So get use to burning cd's mate!

I'll keep that in mind. I think I'll come up with two 30' sets, one more commercial and another with prog.

It's pretty small and more of a chill lounge than a club. Sometimes gets packed.
We just plug in our laptop and play off the CDJs with Serato.

Hey Mac, how you're doin?
Humm... not really. I'm trying to put together a party at my Uni so I can play here, but so far I've got nothing. Are you playing anywhere these days?
BTW: Today's my birthday, for real! lol
Have a great week, bro! Thanks for asking.

no regular gigs mate, was talk of playing at a mate's club night up the sunshine coast this weekend, just waiting for confirmation
Hey dude, thanks!
I'd like to watch you play one of these days, so if you confirm this gig or another one, let me know. Good music and good people is always an awesome combo! lol

OH MY GOD! I Cannot believe it! I think I've never cursed so much in my entire life! I'm soooo disappointed!
Here I was, thinking the whole time I wasn't picked. I have subscribed to the first thread that ToyBox had posted and since I've got no e-mail about that thread or this one, I simply tought I was not picked or that the event hasn't happened. Fuck!
I PMed ToyBox, but I haven't been to the ITM site lately, cause I've been crazy busy at school. So I never knew anything about that party and SPECIALLY that I could have DJed on it until dirty crunt told me just now about that other thread. Damn it!
Seriously, that really ruined my birthday for me. I was all this time, playing in my bedroom, trying to put a Uni party together just so I could play. Finding out just now that I was freaking listed and had any idea about it... fuck...
When I saw what quantum said I took a look into my inbox in ITM and there it was:
"Hey mate, I've got you on the planet line up playing outside on friday the 24th of april. Dj equipment will be cdj1000x2 technics1200x2 DJM909.
You can play pretty much anything, from house, prog, electro, tech.
Will adivse of set times within the week.
Cheers
Danny"
Jesus Christ! I just assumed (yeah, I shouldn't have) that if a new PM was sent to me I would receive and e-mail notifying me about it. Just like it happens when you open a thread and someone make a new post on it. Seriously, you guys have no idea how crazy I am to play and how much finding out JUST NOT disappoints me. This whole thing may not sound like a big deal for you guys, but I was really looking forward to play in a club in Australia for the first time.
ToyBox, I'm terribly sorry for any problem I might have caused. I'm furious at myself for missing it. Not only for the playing it self, but to get to know and be known by the other guys who would be playing as well.
Just the thought of all the fun I missed last friday makes me pissed!
Once again, sorry you guys. I wish I could make it up on another opportunity.
Just the thought of all the fun I missed last friday makes me pissed!
Might find it is actually quite a sober occasion you might of had compared to playing...
quantum is on the internet, ruining peoples birthdays
I'm serious you guys... and usually I'm not. I was really looking forward to this thing, and even worse than finding out you wasn't picked is finding out you was listed, you could have played, but just missed the freaking message.
As as far as quantum goes, he didn't ruin my birthday. I am just a little pissed off with the whole situation. I only have myself to blame.

Rio - even look @ doing things urself (i think sum1 may have said this already), if u can get enuff people organised some clubs eg: Twenty1 (GC) will let u put on ur own nite.....they do brazil nites there as well on a Sunday from time to time so perhaps find out when and talk to the DJ's there about who looks after it and if u can get a spot?!
So Rio, did you hear they have booked you for a gig again?
Wow, that's nice of them. Right on goldcoast... :thumb:
well, Brisbane actually. Gold coast are a mob of cunts
 ok... Figured because he said he moved to the goldcoast he was going for gigs around there. So do dj's from areas like GC 1 hour or so from brisbane get much of a run in town. Are their many venues about?

Two things I know about brazilians
1. They have a great sense of humour
2. They are resilient
well three actually
3. They are crazy
budding DJs should take a leaf out of Rio's book.

Have you ever mixed with CDJS ? Cause Xponent is a toy. Go in the bars first. Ask if you can take care of the music for free. Make friends, go clubbing, learn everything and everyone you can. It takes more than 1year. I started mixing at 15 in a ''music environment'', Im 18 now and I got nice gears but that's not enough. it takes a few years and a lot of night friends.

Dude, I'll say it one more time, I don't even know why I bother anymore... I learned with a pair of 2Ks. And when I use the Xponent, I don't mind the beat counter, specially because they are not as accurate as our ear.
BUT: Midi Controllers/Digital DJing are here to stay, Carl Cox uses it, freaking Marky uses it! If you heard that midi controllers are toys and you like to think that way, be my guest! But you have no arguments on your side, I had this discussion in this forum before, and I was seriously just putting myself in a "learner" position just to hear other peoples thoughts on it. But the best anyone came up with was: "The jogs are smaller..."
It's a shame when you try to be humble and people see that as a sign of stupidity....
Anyways, thanks for your time, bro.
