View Full Version : What are your DJ goals....when u first started and now that you're established.
I stole this from another website, but thought it was a good topic
I have a have been thinkin a lot about DJing. Am I happy where I am? Is it what I always dreamed I would do?
After buying my first pair of turntables 3 years ago i have done a set at ambar, a handful of sets at baropen, bar138, mojo's, one at the rosemount, i guess others here and there and of course a whole heap of parties
I know i can beatmatch well and am really pleased with how well my recorded sets turn out.
Its not about cash for me, i have a 9-5, i just like to play
Sure I could be even more happier if i had a residency or I was spinning every weekend. But even though I dont...I look back at what Ive done and it still makes me smile. I feel like more will come to me in due time.
Sorry for goin on...but I wanna hear about other dj goals and if they are meeting them. And if u met them.... what are ur new goals?
This would be better off in the Dj Forum
I really only wanted to hear about local people who go to and play at local clubs

I was actually thinking about this earlier this week ... do people get into DJing to get gigs ... or for the love of it?
It's never been about getting gigs for me, but i've certainly had a satisfactory amount (from residencies to house parties).
I guess my current goal is just to keep going as i am. I'm more interested in collecting music (old and new) and finding ways to piece it together in mixes.
My ultimate goals are actually aligned to the production of tunes. I'll be happiest when i'm being prolific in churning out tunes of my own and getting gigs here and there to air them alongside with the other tunes/tracks i appreciate.
Sorry Damo anything in the perth forum has to be Perth specific i think you will get a much better response in here anyways

Got decks after a bender, decided i may aswell mix in all my free time.
This lead to a bad vinyl addiction, seliing my decks, buying better ones, and decking out my whole room to mixing.
Havn't played out anywhere yet ! (don't think i have enough tunes tbh), but have entertained 100s of people at my house, plus its a good toy to give buckled people to play with in your house haha

Only just started playing out regularly after 11 years of dj-ing ad collecting vinyl. Never was that keen to, it was more of a private passion. I'm having fun playing out , but I still prefer banging it out in my own room!
for me it doesn't matter if its 5, 25 or 100 people
as long as someone is out there just having fun, appreciating what I'm doing i just thrive on it
I was actually thinking about this earlier this week ... do people get into DJing to get gigs ... or for the love of it?
I think that all the time.. I also wonder where did it all start for me.. and how did it get so crazy..
I guess my current goal is just to keep going as i am.
My problem is if I do this I tend to do lose a bit of interest..
I think when I first started out, I randomly entered a competition, and through that won a Friday & Saturday night residency.. So upholding that and keeping it fresh was probably my goal...
Right now my main goal is probably keeping my radioshow on the up..
Also a couple of things with typical trance DJs:
- They don't know how to play an effective warmup set.. They think it's appropriate to play big tunes at 9-12pm
- They all play the same tunes as each other and week in week out..
So my main goals are to when given the opportunity, make sure I can put my name to an appropriate warmup set & do something a bit more original than what everyone else is doing..
I'm also dabbling in production.. I've had copies of ableton and reason sitting here for a while, and I finally want something to show for it.. I've got no interest in getting signed and no interest of having something I want to play out, I just want something I can look back at and say I did this..

When i bought decks it was never my intention to play out anywhere. It was was always the love for the music. Then someone on here randomly downloaded a mix i did and asked me to play. Since i did that i've improved 10 fold and want to play out because it's fun playing in front of people and i'm already out so why not. I hardly play out regularly but have more stuff coming around than i ever planned.

1. I work your typical 9 to 5 job and earn some good $
2. I run a mobile dj business on weekends and make some more good $
3. Occasionally put on a few party's with all my gear for friends and mix some shit i really like.
4. I'd like to expand the dj business and make more $
5. I'd like to maybe put on a few bangin techno party's one day.
6. Retire young (ish) and just make/mix music.

Any dick can jump on Beatport and download some famous DJs top 10's then go out and play..They are usually the ones who look around after a couple of years and think "well that was fun/uni is over/I am a dick, now for the next fad"..Hmm.
I guess my current goal is just to keep going as i am. I'm more interested in collecting music (old and new) and finding ways to piece it together in mixes.
+1000000
the ONLY reason to DJ.
Having said that, I started mainly because I wanted to be a DJ, and secondly, I wanted my own collection after my favourite radio shows here in Melb gave me a look into what was then (early 90s) a brand new world..There wasn't anywhere else to get this stuff, pre inter-ma-web etc, so it was tape the radio, or go buy your own vinyl. Supportive venues gave me a few gigs, and while none of you have probably heard of me, and I am certainly not living off DJing, I have done some great gigs over the years from Melb-Nottingham-Fiji-Sydney rara..Residencies at smaller places, radio shows etc..Can't see myself ever stopping collecting and spinning a few here and there.
So stop if your heart's not in it, sell the gear and tunes, but keep your faves.

PS. It was when i couldn't work out how to drop "power of ra", then realised it had one extra bar in the intro, and double dropped it for muchos vibes !

its a never ending cycle aint it
Got into cos of the love for the music that I had been exposed to while living in Europe. Always thought it would be a plus if I ever learned the skill to DJ to play out to a crowd.
I've been playing out since last year & at the start I woulda killed for a regular gig. If I had the chance to play out every week I would have been over the moon. It was all about getting more gigs & establishing connections. I probably played 1-2 a month which helped me meet new people & a bigger group to network with.
This year Im not that phased on playing out all the time, sure it would be good to get some extra exposure but through meeting the right type of people it's opened up doors to the parties I WANT to do. The parties which give me the freedom to play what I want to play & do it with people who push the sounds that I really dig to the punters.
Even though I'd probably play out every 2nd month (1-3 times) it's all about doing it with right group of people. Sometimes the gigs are jam packed with punters & others it's just the locals who are always at every event but either scenario leaves me feeling good after playing.
The gigs do come but getting out of the bedroom, sharing ideas, talking about music & meeting like minded people who enjoy music as much as I do is what keeps it all rolling for me.

yeaaaaaah
Only really started playing gigs in the last six months, and I probably shouldn't have quite so soon - but hey, you live and learn! I love just sharing great music and building up a selection that's all my own.
The best for me is still often just hanging out with a couple of mates and mixing together, having a drink or spliff and whatnot - just enjoying the moment and trying to sit on the same musical plain - hearing new tunes and new approaches to mixing. All that said, playing to a roaring crowd (which hasn't been often for me) is a pretty damn good feeling.

I originally got into DJing for the chicks and the attention of being centre stage - no point denying it really. I only lasted a couple of months playing gigs because my heart wasn't in it, the pay was shit, the gig was shit and I wasn't playing what I wanted to play.
Two years later I started again and now I just want to play what I want, develop my own personal style and be the best I can be as a DJ.
I'd like to produce a few tracks to see if I am capable of it and if I can do itttttt then same as DJing. Write what I want and always strive to develop and perfect my own personal style.

i originally knew a guy who was playing at a club i always went to when i was 18. i had no idea how to dj but i somehow convinced him to let me into the booth and teach me to dj. so for about a year i rocked up and watched and learnt and started playing more and more (for free at that stage). i didnt even have my own decks then  that was back in '02/'03.
I just thought it would be awesome to play music to a group of people and keep the party moving, which is i guess 'gigs', it wasn't until about 12 months later i actually went and got my own decks and got more serious with it though..

i wouldn't say its just trance djs don't know how to play an effective warm up set, i think its prety standard with house too, as well as the same tunes week in week out. (not everyone but a lot)
For me when I started I don't think I had too many goals, apart from just playing what I enjoyed playing (this is still one goal now) to people with similar tastes. I won a comp too which got me a residency, and then just went from there.
I guess now it would be to continue on production work, and get things released/remixed etc. Also I want to play overseas again, with a few specific clubs in mind

Fair call... I hate warmup DJs who bang it out at 136bpm at 11pm at night as well :meh:
Another goal I have for the next 12 months or so is to turn Galaxy (my radio show) into a club night... I've wanted to do it for ages but don't have the money to lose on it... The goal behind this is a trance night that has proper warmups and is focussed on trance music, and not egotistical DJs...

Early timeslot IS the warmup slot.
You can often be freer musically - eg. If it's a house night, playing some funk, disco, hip-hop wouldn't be the world's worst crime. Just don't bang it out - that's the rule of an early slot.
Totally depends on what vibe the place normally has though.
P.S. I mean real hiphop, not gangsta rap.

If you play at a hard dance event and go hard early you might get a thumbs up from the dicks that got their early, but the DJs later on are likely to get mad.
Have you ever been to a decent Hard Dance event. Q-dance in sydney johan was on first and he played some hard stuff around 140 - 145 but it wasnt too intense. I definately wouldnt play anthems, more rolling hard-trance, tech-trance even.
Think about the set your playing, or you probably wont be booked again.

Just networking mate, at my old job I was fortunate to get a little bit of sales 101 from one of our directors. Basically its all about people skills.
At the moment I'm trying to get to know DJs through Open Deck Sessions! at the Velvet Lounge (go tonight it starts at 8pm and sign up for the May sessions, do itttttt!).
Also I'm trying to get a gig at a small bar in Perth as well - but I'm not just dropping a mixtape at the bar. I made an effort to speak with the manager get to know a bit about the place and it turns out he has been involved with "the scene" in Perth for quite a while and has worked with many DJs. He is yet to get back to me but if I don't get a gig I know I can ask him who I could ask about getting some workas he seems to be well connected. If I get a gig awesome, but I'll still ask if he knows anyone else.
Basically talk to people, get to know them and never come back from a meeting/conversation empty handed (i.e. try to get another lead, follow up, trial gig etc). Eventually I know I'll meet the right people if I keep working at it.
And no I can't give you any leads - I'm still trying to get some good ones ;D

Really shits me when people dont play warm up when they should be. Sure everyone wants to get people moving but playing big tunes isnt the only way. Most of the nights i go to these days have people on who play warm up sets though. Smaller more intimate nights ftw

Nah the reason I became a DJ is to play the most perfect set ever that I would want to hear in a club.
People always come up to me and say "Holy shit dude, that was one of the best sets I have heard in ages, that was amazing" I am always thinking to myself "It really wasn't that good".
Djing has made me too much of a chinstroker, can't just enjoy the music now for it's sound, have to disect everything and imagine how I could mix it perfectly :(

you dont have to suck dick to show people you support their cause...weird assumption imo. you can be the biggest brown noser ever but you will never last if you dont have skills. you do need to play the game a little but its not that hard, be present, be nice etc etc
besides that, lots of people can tell if you're a wanker or not
if you love the music, you'll get yourself out there and that will most likely involve meeting a few peeps along the way
if you happen to meet promoters, my advice is just be yourself and not push the issue that you're a dj, etc, etc

Back when i bought my decks, i couldn't even beatmatch to save my life, had only about 15 records, and got offered to play dnb sets at bar open because of people i knew lol
Luckily for everyone who attended, i refused hahaha
Also, i don't know you seanious, or even if you play dnb or dubstep of whatever, but i'v found that if you go to most events, within a year you will pretty much know everyone. Especially if you go to smaller nights like weekly shape and rosemount.
Then once you know them, you work on the bar girls for free drinks, then work on the security so you don't get kicked out, lol

I thought the Perth scene was the easiest scene to break into.
Back when i bought my decks, i couldn't even beatmatch to save my life, had only about 15 records, and got offered to play dnb sets at bar open because of people i knew lol

Yea I mainly do house, I got a liquid DnB collection that I just started building this week - I figure if you DJ in Perth you need to have some DnB that and I actually do enjoy playing liquid DnB. You wouldn't know any good house nights in Perth (like weekly ones where I'd get a chance to meet people)? I know the Lokal crew is down at Bar 138 but its not quite what I'm into, although that being said if I need to play tech/minimal/prog to get a gig I'll happily play it. To be honest I'm a bit of a genre whore (i.e. I enjoy most EDM genres).

Open Decks are good, peeps need to get down and support the DJs at them too. Get to know your scene and who does what.

lol
goal was to play at a transmission.... i did that at the white party @ UNSW.
Personally, i haven't played anywhere besides house parties but am looking into getting into club scene....DJing to me would be all about playing the latest and the greatest tunes in my genre and having a good time!!
Anything else would be an added bonus!!

When I first started DJing my first aim was to get a gig and play well to a decent sized crowd, which I did. After that it was to support my two favorite DJs; Adam Beyer and Richie Hawtin, which I got to do as well. I got to the stage where I was playing parties a couple of times a week and gave up playing soon after that. I still loved the music, but got sick of the scene I guess.
wow...blast from the past.
how you doing gene?

I'm doing very well. Just started to dust off the records (well the mp3's anyway) and started to DJ again for the first time in 3 and a half years (just playing around at home). I'm feeling very inspired at the moment. I got all of the jaded out of the system I guess.
How are you going?
started dj'n minimal/house, did a few parties, now have a residency playing house/electro.. none of this commercial bullshit though.
Always been in love with DnB so i started collecting tunes the past few weeks to start cranking some DnB. Recorded a mix, now just waiting for a DnB night to come along in which to get a gig...
never expected to progress so quickly, actually didnt expect to start playing in clubs for a few years, but took me 10 months to get where i am now.
my next goal is to jump into a DVS and start cranking some vinyl (i know going the opposite way from CDJ's to vinyl but i reckon i would enjoy it so much more).

it is all about showing your face imo, you can't break into a scene you don't support as a punter. if you are down at nights regularly, having a drink and just a good time you will meet people.
you dont have to suck dick to show people you support their cause...weird assumption imo. you can be the biggest brown noser ever but you will never last if you dont have skills. you do need to play the game a little but its not that hard, be present, be nice etc etc
I might have to head on over to Force Majeure at the end of the month and follow your advice ;D

no harm in it hey! I also think you really do need to start kind of small, most people i know with residencies at places like ambar etc have been playing for a really really long time and it might seem like they have it easy but they have done the hard yards. cutting your teeth at unpaid gigs and house parties is kinda a right of passage imo and a sense of entitlement is never good.
def come and intro yourself though!

It seems to be a bit of a perception amongst some (not all) people on this forum that the only way to get gigs is sucking dick or what have (I am guilty of this) - but I believe what Megs has said in this regard is true, mainly because it makes sense.
[begin uneducated opinion]
Its also a good thing for DJing, from what I can tell the good gigs are only given to people who have been in the game for a long time and have good relationships with people in the industry. Sure a small bar/pub might give gigs to the owner's sisters son or whatever. But really how long will these guys be around for that are doing it just for the kicks and chicks playing commercial music and b-grade venues (musically speaking)

I work 9-5 and earn some good $$.
I DJ for fun. I love music and love the art, skill and culture of DJing. I also like collecting records. (a lot)
I started with a bunch of hip hop twelves, classic 70s-80s 7inches and a couple of dollar bin funk LPs.
I just wanted to be able to mix multi-genre sets well in a fun and exciting way a la cut chemist & Dj shadow.
From there I progressed to more including boogie, disco, house and b-more at house parties and occasional 21sts of friends. I gave up on trying to learn how to scratch in order to focus on smoother mixes.
I did an open decks night and was given a Friday night residency 8-12pm. Played there for a while, but the club wasn’t quite right for me. A nice place, but the punters were hit and miss. I couldn’t offer them what they wanted aka “something they can dance to” basically the requests drove me mad.
From there got a residency at bar running a hip hop beats and funk night. I’ve expanded it to include disco and a broad range of other things. I’m still there but want to branch out. I just got serato and want to play different sounds on a better quality system.
I’m in the slow process of getting some mixes I’m proud of together and shopping them around all types of clubs and bars. I’m worried a little bit that I’m falling behind the times at the current bar I’m at.
Will do.

also might have to play at some shiteous places whilst coming up, phil played for 2 years every thursday at the claremont (yuk) and every sunday at the cott...not exactly groundbreaking music going on there but at least you are gigging and practising how to get people on the d - floor right? also if you say that shit like the only way you will get gigs is to be a massive brown noser, you insult the very people whose help you need.
sean you should hit up that open decks night at the velvet, it's going to be a regular thing:)

my dj goals are pretty much to get better. i'm still rather shit. i'd like to learn how to scratch too, and improve my mixing substantially. buying decks was something i did for my own amusement/enjoyment, not to impress anyone with my mad skillz. so i just take it really slowly and have as much fun as i can getting new records and working out what mixes with what well (it's taken a while to get a hip hop collection big enough for this to happen).

I got interested in DJing at the start of 2007. Back then i just focused on my skills, listening to other DJ sets for inspiration and was mainly in it for my emerging passion of EDM.
Once I had a complete set up, (well only a pair of Stanton decks, and an average numark mixer) I would practise very regularly and would focus on recording a "perfect mix".
It was only when I was confident with my skills and was looking at buying more serious equipment that i would dream about playing out.
I still remember when I finally got some serious equipment I considered doing anything just to play out live, I wouldn't care if I got paid anything at all I just wanted to share my passion and entertain.
Fast forward a year later and I have won 2 DJing competitions with one leading me to a permanent residency. I am now sick of that current residency and want something bigger and i have a strong focus on the money I am earning from it too which isn't what it should be about.
For some reason I feel like when I didn't have any opportunites to play out the passion was stronger than ever before, I would kill to play at a party, but now, once I have what i wanted I am now not satisfied and I want more... Greed perhaps?
So i guess now my goals are to secure a residency at a place where people actually are into the music I play and try to focus on my producing.

When i started out all i wanted to do was to see my DJ name on a flyer and play the music I love in front of other like-minded people. I've done this and then some. I can die fairly happy because of this. About the only thing I want to do now is get an international gig and maybe play my own tracks on vinyl, but I'm content with what I've achieved....
I actually started 'cos i wanted to impress people and play at gigs and shit like that.
Now 6 months into it, I don't really give a damn about playing in clubs and stuff. I'm getting more enjoyment out of mixing in my own room and looking for new music and new ways to disect and mix tracks.
When I was playing in a club for a little bit with a mate, most of the time people on the dance floor just jump and scream because their fave song is playing where at the same time I wince at the mistake I may have made. They don't really care about the actual technical side about djing (unless you fuck up bad).
That's why I like recording my mixes so I can listen to them and improve and let other experienced djs critique where I'm going wrong and what I'm doing alright.
And also, if I wasn't having fun djing, I would've sold my gear months ago.
I hope my 2 cents make sense haha.
