Hey guys have just started to get my head around ableton on the producing side of things and would like to get it set up, so that i can use it for mixing up demos etc. Not to sure on how to connect it all up though and what is needed. Can i connect ableton on my laptop straight into my mixer or do I need a midi controller.
I currently have
pioneer djm 800
mac book pro
ableton live 7
Digi 002 (protools) this is what i use to connect other audio to my computer, not sure if I have to go via this or not.
Cheers guys any help much appreciated

Wicked thanks mate, by the looks of things you have to use an interface ie cant go straight from the mixer into the computer. Cheers

Check out the lessons in Ableton and try reading the manual for your DJM 800, you'll find all the info you need in those two things :thumb:
You can connect you mixer straight to your computer, all you need is one of these http://www.storedj.com.au/products/product.php?id=1579 which can be found on ebay for about 10 bucks.

Is this what most djs use when they are in the clubs. So much easier I would assume being able to bring just this one cable hanging out of your laptop.

I'm yet to see a DJ use the midi capabilities of the 800 in a club. There are much better midi controllers for controlling Ableton, however it all depends what you want to do with it!

i'd say you'd have to go from the mixer via midi, then out through ableton into the soundcard back into the mixer - i've seen deamau5 using the 800 but he had it setup as a standalone that plugged back into the club installed mixer (probaly not the best example, but it gives you an idea)

plus what do you do whne a club doesn't have a djm800

If you're into producing as well i'd suggest a midi keyboard with a few pots that you can assign when you want to do the dj thing too

some people use the korg nanos, others use the M-Audio UC33e

both are cheap, portable solutions for control of ableton live

akai has recently released the APC40 at this years Miami WMC which is basically a dedicated ableton controller requiring only a single line out with 9 faders built into the controller along with 16 pots and more buttons than you probably need.. In all honesty it is enough of a hassle plugging 2 channels of your soundcard in from ableton while the previous DJ is still going letalone asking him to step aside while you plug the midi in during his last tune.

Basically an interface with a minimum of 2 outputs will get you going for basic DJ use..

Adding a midi controller to the setup gives you a wealth of other options and there are so many good ones out there including the one I already mentioned..

Currently I use a remote SL25 myself but really loving the look of the akai ATM..

I would post links to other sources of information but seeing that they are forums I assume my post would get deletet or edited so I will leave that to you..

APC40 is THE controller for ableton at the moment

I've never seen anyone use the MIDI on the 800....from what i hear its a pain in the ass to set up and well, i think it was a last minute bolt of of Pioneer really

Seen Deadmau5 use a 3D / 4D - but that'a whole other topic now

But even still the polite thing to do would be have all your setup ready to go bar the connections and to bring a cd to mix into his last track then do the setup during your own set.

Yeh just checked out the APC40 then. What a beast, would be perfect for producing as well, pity about the $999 price tag

Yeah, but that's nothing to do with the MIDI from what i can read
He's using it as a mixer.....not a MIDI controller
the Monome and Lemur would be for MIDI

You get what you pay for dude
Good MIDI controller of that depth isn't going to come for 200 bucks

^ Tis true I know. Just wish i had the money for it because now I want it from a producing standpoint as well. Might have to sacrifice some of my Kevin Rudd money for this.
