As of late ive been just purchasing mp3s insted of wav's coz its been getting a bit expensive, but umm i noticed (varies depending on site i used to download) that when i click properties of the file the bitrate shows as 320kb/s all happy right :) but then when i play them through windowsmediaplayer the bitrate sometimes appears to be less than 320, it can sometimes be 256 201 or several other random qualities, any1 care to explain this occurance to me? much appreciation

Looks like you might be buying VBR tracks, pretty sure Beatport only gives you the choice of 320. Try a different site.

Im pretty sure you would know. Its pretty clear on all the store i buy from 320kb, wav or 256kb(juno i think?).
I get 320Kb (as opposed to wav), because i value my bandwidth, anything under 320 i dont bother.

you have variable bit rate (VBR) mp3's. you will notice that in places such as breakdowns that the bitrate will be quite low.

I have got a vinyl addiction, i just dont like getting capped EVERY month lol. I work in IT so i have to downloads plenty more stuff than just musics.
I love mixing vinyl at home, and still love buying vinyl. Regularly blow my last bits of paycheck on records that catch my eye.
The difference between 320 and wav is not big enough for me to worry about. Espc when heaps of artists are going "lo-fi" lol. I can definately here the difference between CD and vinyl though, its those freq's that warm your soul.

I've got about 1500 records.. I love vinyl, I love buying it, I love mixing it and I love coming back from my lunch break at work and seeing my latest order on my desk.. Vinyl's just too expensive now especially with the dollar and Amato Distribution going bankrupt.. Buying a full release on beatport right now (IE, the track and 3 or 4 remixes in the release) doesn't work out much cheaper than the buying the vinyl did 3 or 4 years ago..
Also with the wav/mp3 discussion.. Wav's are good if you want to do an edit (mp3's lose quality everytime you render them out) of a track but are probably overkill just for burning to disc and playing out..
I always get the 320kbps if I can, I'll take a 192kbps if I have to, but I'm very selective about where I'll play it out...

audiophiles who get narky about sound quality are everywhere in every circle in this particular industry. go visit the music production forum and see how you go.

If you're buying something as 320 and getting vbr then that's fucked. vbr's terrible and when you mix it it doesn't stick properly, it jumps about and you gotta adjust the mix constantly, esp if you're mixing two vbr tracks together.
I only buy wavs on the special tracks where I want maximum clarity and full force because they're just such elite tracks and I know I'll listen to them a lot over the yars. Otherwise 320 is the bomb.
HOWEVER, if I was an international and making fuck loads of money then I'd always use wav for gigs.

especially if it's a beautiful track

Gotta love commercial DJs who download the latest 50 cent track illegally then bang out this poor quality shit and try to compensate for lack of quality by maxing the eqs.....not that i use to do that or anything

I agree... whether mixing at home or out if it sounds like shit, I'm not enjoying myself...
It's not about being a narky audiophile, it's about having a sound that is aurally pleasing.. There's nothing worse than a night out that's ruined by a sound egineer or DJ constantly redlining everything..

my fave so far was listening to a dj set and hearing sweepers from radio stations which they'd ripped the mp3 from.
^^ hehe i did that once! back when armand van helden played my my my at the very beginning of his essential mix, and the track wasn't out yet. :P

Exactly what i think everytime someone complains about digital prices! And even when i do buy something digital to listen to, coz i know i don't want it bad enough for wax, i still buy wav (mostly coz i can then chuck it on my sampler).
People need to value their tracks more i say!

I always buy full releases on beatport... It's not that much cheaper now than the full vinyl was 12 months ago
