View Full Version : Commercial music DJ's: WHERE THE F do you get your tracks?

Exactly what the title says. Where do you get all your mega cheese from? I'm talking remixes of top 40 crap, I've looked everywhere and the only place I can find them is illegally from websites, where can I buy this rubbish? I need it to make monies (ie sellout).
Thanks.
Serial question btw. I know it's lame but I need to get some cheesey songs. We won't discuss as to why.

thnx.
buy the singles from HMV, Sanity, etc. they've normally got a couple of different remixes as well as the original.
you may wish to wear dark sunnies or some form of disguise as you prowl the aisles of your local HMV in search of said cheese...

dear god jesus. I don't understand how you can understand the concepts of mixing without knowing how to do this? is it like a general question? as in you're bored at work and was wondering how? or?
mate if you search my user name there's a million threads where I've posted stupid questions. Everyone does it, everyone must pay the price.
Blame the guys who started it :P
lol anyways, there are a few good remixes on most dance and pop cd singles. I find though that unless its a nightclub, the punters like the original better.;)
Where are you selling out at?

Hey dude ive had the same problem for years now. I do a bit of mobile dj'n and constantly need to have the latest commercial dance cheese in my library and it ain't that easy. Generally people either illegally download them or buy the actual cd's from sanity and stores like that.
But yeah if there's an online download store that has the commercial cheese tracks as well with the extended dance rmx's as well i'd love to know about it. Beatport and djdownload usually have a few tunes but not many. It's weird.
It's almost as if there's some secret commercial dance club cheese download site that no one talks about or something. Oooooh a big secret ;)
Ive had a few gigs at commercial cheese clubs where the owners wanted about 4/5 hours of the latest commercial nova cheese and it was a nightmare trying to find such cheese. How the hell do the regular cheesy dj's do it?
As others have said iTunes or you can subscribe a CD service: http://www.sbamusic.com.au/plugins/sbamusic.cgi/main/audio_programs

iTunes?
This is the best way to go as far as I'm concerned. It has charts, and you can listen to the song before you buy instead of going to JbHiFi and randomly buying singles. I bought some serious crap over the years buying singles. iTunes ftw

yeah I wasn't taking the piss.. It really is on of the best places to look for that kind of thing.
compilations are a good place to look as well...
urban top hits and video hits top 20 etc etc...
that is if you don't want to be looking track by track.

Generally all the big remixes that take off are custom jobs that they don't release to the public where possible.
How to all the big djs get them.....well example (breaks related)
Generally all the Finger lickin crew and supercharged crew and stantons etc are all pretty good mates.....so when they like a track the other has, cd burn....here you go.
I know Krafty Kuts sets now days pretty much consist of 95% tracks which he has had some sort of re rub or edit on............can you find them anywhere???? Nope
Similar version can be found but just not that exact edit....
Really frustrating....but i suppose if it was your job to dj worldwide, you'd be trying to keep your cards close to your chest too....

every time i walk into a record shop there is an abundance of commercial cheese
i think the order of the day here is a lot of music cheap, rather than buying a vinyl collection of music you don't like.
hey guys ive had the same problem and i found www.dancemusichub.com to have all the cheese great for those local country hick pub gigs

This happened to me recently. I played a top40 gig and I thought I'd play non cheese then they started requesting DJ alligator :rainman:

Has Itunes fixed up the sample that you get to listen to?
I mean in the past when I'd preview a 7 minute track the preview of it would be 1 minute of the 32bar intro which meant I never got to here the chorus or anything interesting.

Yea it still does that but its usually 32 bars at some random location in the track - hate it. I usually get around it by listening to a sample of the radio edit.
But if you buy songs from there, doesnt it mean you cant play them on CDJ-400s because of the copyright issues or something ?

You have to burn them as audio.
You can't make Mp3 CD's of music bought from iTunes.
Never play Mp3's out. Buy the wave files!

All of the iTunes library is now itunes plus so you can copy the mp3s
It is better to buy wavs though which can't be bought from iTunes

I know exactly what you're talking about. Everyone seems to tell you to go to iTunes - but in Australia we don't get all the remixes that iTunes in the USA or UK get. It's really frustrating - you want to buy it but can't, yet you can illegally download it. The CD singles in Aus never seem to have any remixes on them either.
Here's what you do. Go to http://www.redeye.com.au and pay an absolute fortune for an import remix CD (I've had to pay $24.95 when I only wanted one of the remixes and then iTunes released it in Australia 2 months after the US). Some take 3 weeks to deliver and by that time no-one wants to hear that song anyway. Australia is not the place you want to live in if you want to play legal commercial music. Try switching your iTunes Store to USA or UK and have a look at their options.
If anyone can help me further with this, I'd appreciate it too. I posted a similar thread under my old user name ages ago and I tried every single sugestion that I was offered to no avail.
What are the Record Labels thinking. In this day and age you'd think that they would make it incredibly easy to buy music online - but not the case in Australia.
I guess I should say "End Rant".
Not sure what all the fuss is about, sounds like you are just being lazy and wan't everything in the one place.

Is it just me? When I right click on a purchased iTunes track (within iTunes) I simply scroll down to where it says "Create MP3 Version".

When you say they give out promo tracks do you mean free quality music? :D Either way i dont care if i have to pay and or hunt for the tune but at the end of the day i just want my commercial wav's.
BTW totally agree Aus love my country but our music situation sucks.
Are their any talks of lifting some of these impeding territory laws (i know they are there for a reason just curoius)

Yeah true, i guss its in the reocording labels interest but then again letting people pay money for ur tunes vs. pirating them off of the internet. i dont see how they can afford to make that choice.
^^Definitely.
It's like
ME:"hey, I have the money to pay for you song"
Label: "Go away you stupid Aussie"
ME: "Ok. I found there's a guy over here giving away your song. I guess I'll just get it off him"

two problems lol: Legality and conscience (which dosent bother me so much because tried to do the right thing), but then again you have no choice but to take a fucking mp3 whith a far to metallic sound to be "320". i hate playing with shit quality just makes me cringe.

haha so tru....so much rubbish gets said n thrown @ everyone....its kinda funny tho....
dammit didnt quote the other thing i wanted to talk about but yea...beatport shits me to tears with territory restrictions and itunes SOMETIMES lets u burn n create mp3 versions but not always....there was a couple of mixes i cudnt find anywhere but itunes and 2 out of 5 of them i cud actually use out of itunes (i use serato but prefer to use crates as opposed to itunes playlists as itunes double everything up n it shits me, crates are much more easy to manage!)
there's a couple of good remix sites...on a different comp at work so dont have my bookmarks but stompy.com comes to mind and will edit this when i get home with the others :D
If you dont like doing it, whats with all the fist pumping and jeebus poses? :prydz:
its not fist pumping....its an all too common term in the DJ world.....ROBOT lol...i did it for 4yrs and still do from time to time but try to concentrate more on guest spots playing what i want to....for ppl who hate working a day job and want nothing more than to be round music all the time we sometimes sell out and play in commercial clubs so that we r always around music and the pay is good. I'd rather play tracks that are ok and never have to work a day job and get paid more than most others working in jobs they dont really like.
IMO.... maybe?

hmmm this may be the formula I've been looking for to get out of my fulltime job...
hmmm this may be the formula I've been looking for to get out of my fulltime job...
its not bad....ecspecially if u r wanting to become a DJ getting spots playing where n wat u wana play, jus don't get stuck as a few people I know have and not got where they wanted to. it also allows u to get a few venue names under ur belt which IMO definatley helps when u wana get spots in other venues, def helps if u know sum1 in the venue (good ol who u know crap! lol luckily i did security for 4yrs so knew most ppl :) ) its kinda hard these days to hand over a demo/promo mix as most kids hand over a promo thats been done on the comp/laptop then rock up n play a shit set so alot of promoters n venue managers wana hear u've played in other venues and get some sort of a bio along with a mix. hope this helps....its what i did and now have 2 radio shows, get guest spots and didnt have to work a day job :hooray:
sorry to move this thread away from what its about!!! i'll be quite now :)

Elitist twat.
Honestly mate, gimme a break. DJing pays the bills for me, and even tho they arent gigs in proper clubs playing what i want to play per se, its still a job that pays fucking well. the kids at uni bar and various 18ths/21sts want cheese so i have to find a way to get it to them. show me a DL site to purchase all these top40 remixes and i'll buy up big in the name of providing a service. but until then, i'll do what i have to. and dont say itunes, i've already milked that to its full potential.
U say that i'm cheapening the whole DJ and music industry? i thought the dj performance industry was primarily about providing a service? get off ur fucking high horse mate, the lack of oxygen up there is hindering ur ability to form a rational thought.
No hard feelings mate, just calling it how i see it
most DJ's are covered by blanket license paid by the clubs. thus why sum clubs entry and drink prices went up n sum clubs started to constantly charge entry bout a yr ago as APRA upped the license fees.....i agree u shud buy the music when u can but sumtimes its hard n i dont understand why labels wana make it as hard as it is to buy their music....its retarded...i buy what i can but alot of the time end up on a blog for a particular mix coz i keep gettn a territory restriciton or like amazon won't sell to AUS....not saying its the right thing to do but can understand why SOMETIMES u need to do it.
