Do dj’s have talent or skill?

Is dj’ing an art?

Do different dj’ing mediums such as turntables, cdj’s, ableton, midi controller ect require a different level of skill?

any words of wisdom would be much appreciated...

also sorry if there has already been threads about this, please direct me because i couldn't find any..

level of skill is not really a good comparison to make

the skills are different - the ability to execute each skill depends on the level reached

whether a dj is good or not, doesn't necessarily depend on skill alone

maybe talent more than skill? almost anyone can be taught how to mix... but if the don't have any musical background etc... then they can turn out to be pretty shit

I thinhk it's a skill u obtain to become a good dj, like beatmatching and knowing ur music isn't a talent it's a skill u acquire. u develop a skill not develop a talent for something. with talent u either go it or u don't. skill can be taught or learned through persistency and that my friends is how the world works!

yea exactly what jarrod said, you aquire a skill, eg djing... dont believe its a talent

Personally I don't think beatmatching is a talent. It's a skill you train at and aquire like any other. For house, techno and other genres where quickly cutting up the music isn't the aim like with a DMC style DJ I see the talent factor as being involved in how you programme your set and create a mood/vibe/journey over time. So i think the actual act of DJing is a skill but its how you DJ that involves talent.

For DMC style DJs i can see how talent may be involved in the actual physical process of DJing as i think its fair to say that the best scratchers/etc instrumentalise the turntables & the mixer.

As for whether DJing is an art or not the answer depends on your definition of what art is. One definition i've heard is that art is constituted by a creative process in which the artist has tried to express an emotion or experience through an outward medium (or something like that) so under that type of definition you could argue that good DJs who have a purpose in what and how they play are being artistic.

ps: I saw DJ Debate last year.. he plays da sickest toons eva :P

"talent", "knack" whateva you want to call it, some people just take to DJing quicker than others.

DJing is an art to a certain extent overall I think. Obviously it is made up of many skillsets such as beatmatching, track choice, eq, cue points etc etc.. But given that music IS ART and DJing is ALL ABOUT the music, safe to say it is very artistic.

:) my insight

being a skillful painter does not neccessarily make you an artist, though being a technically skilled painter will surely help you to express yourself artistically, and thus become an artist.

same same with djing. all the techy bullshit you do are just tools in your toolbox. what you do with those tools is a different supposition altogether.

i personally dj 4ish days a week, but wouldnt call myself an artist. id probably call myself something more like "money whore", or perhaps "insecure drunk chick pickerupperer"

k gtg. got a gig. fuck i hate gigs. cant they just pay me and play a mixtape or something. fuckers. over it. overrrr itttttttt

Some dj's have talent, some have skills, some have both. The rest of them play purely in the digital realm.

it takes skill to DJ, it takes talent to be a good performing DJ.

no. the art is in the music. you are just the medium that expresses it. is an actor the piece of art, or is his performance a piece of art?

yes. obviously, they're all different skills. but the talent of performance remains.

Here's how i view DJing:

-If you can scratch to create a sound of your own, then you have a talent
-If you're a turntablist who can do magical wonders to DJing and sees a turntable as an instrument and works it like an instrument, then you're an artist
-If you're a DJ who also ventures into different realms of music like Goldie, DJ Spooky and Mason, then you're a Renaissance Man
-If you can beatmach 3 or more genres like Toddla T and having the ability to implement turntablism at the same time, then you have skills

To me, the best DJs are DJs who see DJing as more than just DJing. You know what i mean?

this is a quote from deadmau5...what are everyones thoughts?

"It puts me to fucking sleep to be quite honest, I don’t really see the technical merit in playing two songs at the same speed together and it bores me to fucking tears and hopefully with all due respect to the dj type that will fucking go the way of the dinosaur id like them to dis-a-fucking-pear. Joel continued, its so middle man, they’re like fucking lawyers. You need them, but they’re fucking ****s. God bless them they’re my number one customer right so I’m not gonna go diss every fucking DJ. But to say you become this massive up on a podium performer by playing other peoples productions at the same speed as someone else’s productions and fading between the two of them, I don’t get it.”
