sounds like something is fucking up here...

usually if you cant hear vocals it means one of the channels has been switched out of phase

this means that one channel is "opposite" to what it should be. that means that when you play it stereo, the out of phase channel interferes... now, when there is common data in each channel, such as vocals which are usually mono, they get cancelled out... however non-common data, such as stereo/panned sound doesnt get interfered with and you hear it fine...

does this happen with all digital audio on your comp? with CDs too?

what about if you rip a CD to an mp3 and play it?

check the settings of your MP3 player. If it's Microsoft Media Player, make sure Truebass and WOW are turned off

If its winamp check you are not running a plugin that provides "3d sound" or something similar...

we'd need more precise info on the files being played and your setup to make any real advice

it could be a phase issue (that comes to mind first on the 'dim vocals issue')

whats the tracks in general, whats your speakers and amp and program?

it could even be as simple as, say, dodgy connections on a home wired system

things like this take alot of troubleshooting and patience, dont expect us to answer it perfectly for you

maybe the pre-mp3 recording was like that....just cause the instruments sound louder than vocals doesnt necessary mean there's something wrong. maybe the artist wanted to have that effect? i dunno...

test ya pc with a variety of cds. does it sound fine? if no, then check your interconnects, check ya sound card mixer (ie. eqs), shit speakers? shit sound card? shit bitrate for the mp3? i dunno. more details please.

but yeah, it could be that nothing is wrong and you just have a badly encoded mp3 with a shit bitrate.
