doing my head in.

As soon as I put my headshell in i get a very soft hum in one speaker/head phone which you can't notice when a tune is playing... then without touching or bumping anything the hum becomes super loud and intense, similar to as if you disconect the earth wire... as soon as i unscrew the headshell it completely stops. The only thing that i have noticed while trying to figure out whats going on, is the part which tightens the headshell feels gritty when you spin it, as if something has flogged out inside... like as if there is a tiny bearing or something that has failed.

Anybody experienced this/know things to check or look for?

sounds like a bad earthwire, give it a wiggle when it starts to hum and you will be able to work out if it is that

That was the first thing i thought but im thinking it cant be the earth wire (may be wrong) If it was the earthwire it would hum all the time regardless of wether the headshell is in or not?

wiring from the cartridge to the headshell perhaps? take out the wires, put em back in. it can happen if one of the wires is broken on the inside too. :(

Get your hands on another cart so you can isolate the issue. (I have no idea whether a cart can cause this type of issue)

Do you think this problem could be caused by the mixer?.... when the hum happened just then I quickly switch off the mixer without touching the turntable so my speakers didn't get damaged (its proper redlining)... I turned the mixer back on 5secs later and it was fine again. this is seriously doing my head in. fyi is a vestax PCV-275

Anybody?

you can damage your speakers by turning off the mixer like that, always turn the speakers off first.

if it hums, just turn the volume right down and try to isolate the problem
