View Full Version : cubase sx - vst anomaly?

just wondering if anyone could shed some light on the following...
i've been playing around in cubase sx for the last month or so - the first time i've worked with the wonders of vst. on a track i'm currently working on, i've created a filter sweep over some percussion.
now, in the vst automation, i've got the cutoff going from fully open to fully closed over the course of 4 beats:

when i'm actually inside cubase, and play this, it does what i would expect.
however, when i do an audio mixdown, the filter reaches the third beat (approximately) and then pops back to being fully open, thus ruining the effect i'm trying to create. and in other spots on the same track (where the cutoff changes over a longer timeframe) there is no problem, either inside cubase or after the audio mixdown.
a short sample of it:

basically the drums come back at around the 2.28 second point, rather than just after 3 seconds like the automation would suggest (and as it actually plays inside cubase).
anyone experienced anything like this, or know whats causing it? the filter is the waldorf d-pole...

yeah thats a wierd one ???? only thing i would suggest is to maybe move the automation data a few samples past the 1 see if that helps

Gotta couple of suggestions...I have no idea what could be the cause of the anomally however, some of these ideas might help
Thin out your controller curve..., you have a stack of points in it and some of them are redundant ,
Try mixing down to a different format..
try rewriting the controller curve again.
Try pressing the read button off. Save it, quit, open it up again and turn it back on.
You could always put your controller data in midi files. Newer cubase plugins can recieve midi CC data as automation data. Waldorf D-pole is a good example.
This way the midi file plays the filter like a VSTi so it's timing is more important to cubase.
Or you could just say " fuck it, i never liked that damn filter sweep anway" and use that cool ring mod effect. Result!

this is driving me insane X(
i thinned out the controller curve (used the line tool instead of drawing it by hand - i did it by hand initially cos i have a phobia about "exact" filter sweeps, and i thought it might sound more "natural" that way, though of course over such a short distance it doesn't matter at all). no luck.
i deleted the data, and re-entered it. no luck.
read button off/save/open/on...no luck.
mixing down to a different format i didn't try - mixing down to 44khz 16-bit wav currently, and need to do some final editing on the file.
haven't tried changing it from automation to cc data. to be honest its not something i've done before...didn't work with cc data all that much when i used hardware either.
i think the "fuck it" option is looking best right about now. dunno bout using ring mod there :) got a couple of other ideas i'll try tomorrow night.
cheers to both of you for the suggestions...once i change this bit, i'll throw up a link to the final track.

Actually i just got one of these blue line fuck ups on a volume curve.
I just used the curve to stab a pad in on the first beat of the bar , but now it stabs it in about a few beats before....
grr...
this is during playback, i haven't try to mix it down yet.

what version of sx are you running? i'm using 1.01 right now, but have 1.02, just haven't installed it yet (worried it might screw with settings).

1.03
Mind you it is a cracked copy, but even then that doesn't explain why it only occurs sporadically. it' only happens some times when i open it up.
What's even stranger is that i open the same file, with all the attached audio and the same plugins on a different computer running the same cracked copy of cubase. it it doesn't happen it all.
Really weird...
I think it's to do with the weather , i think it's enviromental.

Bah.. logic
Used to poo all over cubase. but since steinberg did the complete rebuild for sx/sl, and since logic became a little more buggy and a lot less friendly with non Apple machines, i think i know which one i'm a choosin

1.03 is out? shit...
sounds like its just an intermittent bug that hopefully steinberg will iron out.
logic? no thanks, particularly since they've stopped PC development.

yeah phibbler good idea with cc's that would probably work alot better .... or try a different filter plug in like frohmage that filter shits on d pole anyway if all your using is the filter

Mmm. Fromage ... ( french cheese). D-pole 1.5 is good though and its got the lurvely sample rate reducing thingy. I love droping that rate down and getting some aliasing on drums and bass to give that sweet crunchy-crunch-de-crunch-crunchy goodness.
Who sez digital is sterile and souless ?
But on another note ...
How do you automate things like Channel volume and eq with CC messages? You can do it with blue lines but it should be able to be done with cc.
It could be done in previous versions of cubase but i don't know how here. Guess i got to read the manual... again.

I can think of no better reason to change to logic.
sorry. i'll pack up my soap box now and go home.

Huzzaah !
Hooray!
I fixed it!
la la la la la la..... (song of joy)
This may not work for you but if you turn your buffer size up, ( latency up) , then blue line controller curves go in place purfect.
It also cleared up a few problems i have been having otherwise. No not the obvious pops and clicks but a loud buzzing noise every time the song gets stoped or the cursor gets moved.
Hola!
Logic. Cubase. Much of a muchness now i think. What will irk you in one DAW will charm you in the other.
but since logic is now starting exclusive vst-like technology, which is supposed to be the shiznit ( whats it called?), it may crack it up another notch. Mind you they are kinda dropping vst and vsti support, as well as pc, so this will make logic users exclusively apple users , and that siree, just won't do
