I'm looking at buying some decks/mixer, but am not sure what to get. A couple of people have told me to get Technics 1200's....but they are pretty dam expensive!
Had a dude in a shop try to sell me some Stanton 80's...so I was wondering how much difference there is.
Looked a the entry level mixers from pioneer and vestax...but am wondering if I should spend the extra $ and get one I can grow into.
Cheers:tripping: XD :p

mixers are you own choice (and a hard one) JUST DONT BUY A SECOND HAND ONE -
Regarding decks, there is a reason the 1200's are industry standard and when you factor that in with potential resale value of 1200's compared to any other deck, they are not really that expensive. second hand 1200's are OK, just make sure you go shopping with someone that is familiar with them.

You can live with a shitty mixer (non-vestax/pioneer even) until you research it properly, play around for a few months and figure out exactly what you want.
Shitty turntables, on the other hand, will have you pulling your hair out...

riley g just said the main point to remember - spend the moola on the decks not the mixer, you can always upgrade once you know the whole thing is working for you - and you can sell 1200's easy for a good return, but a middle range mixer will depreciate like a skanky ho-bitch.
:) :P :p

I'm not so sure thats the way to go......
here's why
are you willing to put at least $2500 into a setup that may only last you six months until you go "FUK this mixing is shit..... its a waste of money and time!!!".... I've seen it happen.
also "dealing with" crappy dex may not be as bad as you think. if you do like mixing and move up to playing at a party on your mates dex, which are Gemini, or (God forbid) Amercian DJ... your going to have a LOT of trouble, dealing with gear that fuks up is a big part of being a DJ.
There are some decent dex out there, that arn't tech's depending on what you want to play.
anyways, comming from someone that just wanted to mix, but couldn't afford the tech's I think i made the right decision
theres this one deal of 1 x mixer and 2 x spin turntables..
looks not bad--for $1100 pretty good deal...
if not that get some stanton turntables....:|
ermmmmm well pretty much if you buy stantons, you'll get heaps used to them and you'll have no probs mixing with em all you like at home
but were you to get a gig somewhere, you'd be playing on technics and technics are nothing like stantons, and itll be quite disorienting.. my advice is, if you're gonna buy stantons, just make sure you get a go on technics every now and then.. just so you know what to expect!

I'm currently learning on Vestax decks... is it gonna be hard to swap over to playing on Technics when I eventually have to???
Cheers,

dunno, man... it's worth shelling out the $1800 or so for the technics at least, because you'll get a decent resale price for them.
re. the crappy decks... if you do turn up to a party with american dj decks, go back and grab your technics! dealing with gear that fucks up is one thing, dealing with things that are fucked from the start and always will be is another.
but at the end of the day... whatever. pay as much as you can justify to yourself, I guess.

depends if you get addicted to the extra pitch range and some of the extra little features! at least you'll have got used to something reliable, shouldn't be too much of a leap, I find it a bit wierd going from technics to vestax but it's not that big a deal.
