yep, i've got a nice sonar sample, its of a torpedo heading for a submarine, so the sonar pings close in :P tres cool. I sampled it from "The Hunt For Red October" :P
I'll email it over asap :)

hmm ive used sub sonar sounds before... a great ambient sound in breakdowns and before a build up
you can make them pretty easily using fm synthesis by modifying some Bell preset sounds and killing off the release, harden up a sine wave and shape it with tri and let it get some muddy reverb for ambience. also theres a patch on the XP30 that you can kill off three of the tones and the last one (number 4) just needs to be verbed a little
having said all that im assuming theres some fuck easy way to do that tone.
what i want to know is how the hell that guy who made Crusher X came up with that program and those sounds

there's a plugin - 'onepingonly' that's pretty funny for that stuff.
you really want two waves; square and noise.
filter cutoff low with no resonance - you just want a bit of bite on the front of the wave, made with an envelope, and then fairly quckly filter to a sine wave. it should never sound bright.
mix some noise in (pre filter as well), and then for that 50's movie effect popularised on many prog tracks, put in a long smooth reverb.

yeah i was about to launch into the theory of constructing one from scratch but i couldnt be bothered...
i should get to modifying the tubular bell preset on my dx7ii
i have onepingonly... never really thought about using it for a sonar sound... i'll have to look at it again.
its free, just search for it...
If you are still sfter that sonar sound i got one from a reason refil, akai s5000/6000.
I can mail it to ya if you wish, it's just one ping.
also if you wanted to make one use a 303 like sound, varying the attack on the amp depending on the ping you want.
then use gated reverb, large reverb, and maybe a touch of delay.
I also made some badass whale call sounds, using my 303.
good luck with it.

yeah, best way is to experiment. you could make the sound a million different ways from a million different samples. atleast if u tune it with ur ear u can do it over and over again.....
