Hey guys, some mates of mine are thinking about grabbing 2 CDJ 100s and a DJM 300 for $400

They have been wanting to start mixing for ages and r moving in together soon so they figured they might as well grab them while they can. (One day left on sale!)

I'm assuming they're out of production now so i just wanted to check if they're decent entry level gear and if they have any major problems?

What do u guys think??

$400 is not bad to get started, although they are some very old pieces of kit. The 100s are almost as basic as some rackmount CDJs, which may give you better performance.

If you can stretch your budget, you'll probably hag onto the gear for longer. You'll be wanting to upgrade that in no time

If that is your mates absolute maximum budget then they will do fine. Otherwise I'd suggest to him to save up a bit more and get some 200s instead.

Agree with the 200s comment... Am really not a fan of the 100s. But if $400 is your absolute limit, then it's an OK set up to learn the basics on.
My advice would be to save a little longer and look at getting something a little better.

but... if you are keen on getting the 100's, go for it.
These are the workhorse of the cd industry.
These are the first commercial cd system Pioneer came out with and they will stand the test of time.
A little info...
THey are made with Car Audio lazers. So bumps or scratched CD's won't affect it (much).
The buttons are better quality than the 200's. The 200's buttons will eventually crap out and need repair.

So what you cant do a loop as per the 200's? learn to do it manually.
Hell, back in the day, I use to (and still do) loop off my 1200's with vinyl. No DVS system!

$400 squids for your frst setup isn't a bad price my friend. the mixer is a strong one and will give you years of enjoyment.

$400 is a good price imo

nothing wrong with the CDJ100 & DJM300 for a first set up at all

It's a good price, for both.

Definitely enough to get you started, for sure.

Great price :thumb: I still use an original CDJ100 that I purchased 10 years ago in my setup at home (along with a CDJ800) - if you can learn to beat match on the 100 you can do it on any CD player...

Go for it - for $400 I will snipe your bid if you don't do it :P

I did this last year with a mate. They were real good but after about a month of constant mixing you get pretty bored and sometimes annoyed at the limitations they have and want to move onto something better (ie. no bpm etc etc).

But they were really fun and good to start off with, I'd save and maybe get the 200's though.

Good luck!

The only real negative that I can think of with the CDJ100s, is that the pitch only runs to one decimal place (i.e. 0.1% - as opposed to 0.02%).

It may not seem like a huge difference at first however; as your skills improve, and your ears tune into more elements in the mix, you'll find you're making more and more mid-mix adjustments, using the jog wheel.

In saying that, having a relatively simple setup will be an advantage when starting out. Your learning will focus on actual mixing, as opposed to the range of effects found on a DJM400 / CDJ400 setup - which seem to sidetrack a lot of newbies! :P

^^ true the pitch slider needs to be constantly adjusted when using them, makes it hard for long smooth mixes but it improves your skillz more than any other deck will

 you kids who rely on BMP counters are going to train wreck badly when you get a player / mixer with a broken counter (or even one without a counter) - learn to mix without them!

If you read above, you'll see that I did. However after a while, it just became monotonous and one extra thing you had to worry about when if you spent a bit extra, you didn't have to...

BMP counters

What is this you speak of? Will it make me mix like David Guetta?

two of the same record, mark your cue point and juggle, spin back, cue... etc.

you should have just bought the higher model vinyl which had a pre-stuck sticker for perfect loops with no effort.

Ah, that makes perfect sense. Thank you :D

OP: I would've grabbed them for that price. If they don't like it, it's not too big a loss, and the upgrade jump from 200 > 1000 won't cost as much as say... 400's > 1000's (or whatever).

oh yeah man, coz beatmatching is such a worry

anyway, hot damn $400 is stupid cheap for that setup. it's all you need to get started. shit, i bought the same setup nearly 5 years ago and i still have it (although the djm300 is on extended loan to a friend as i eventually bought a djm600 too). but yeah, cdj100s are all i need for home mixing, fuck paying thousands of dollars for fancy things for home.

Wow, thanks for the quick response and all your advice guys. Certainly makes me look more knowledgable to my friends haha.

Passed on the all-good and as far as I know they snapped em up. Looking forward to chucking them in with my set up when i'm round and commencing 4 deck madness! lol :ahoy:

let's concur to concur :geek:

starting cheap with decent gear like this (assuming it's in good nick...i have played on some fairly messed-up 100s in the past) is the way to go....
