View Full Version : Need ADvice DJ Setup!

Hi Guys
I have been mixing digitally for years now(Electronic mainly all genres, including DnB) and finally decided it's such a main hobby/interest that i should purchase a proper DJ setup so i may mix live for parties etc (for friends) as I really enjoy it making mixes for friends and just generally anything to do with music. I have done a few sets live but not on my own gear :( and have had a blast and good feedback.
SO!
I'm having a hard time deciding what mixer I need.
Criteria/Situation:
I plan to use Traktor Scratch Pro at home(which i use now) for making polished mixes, so would like to integrate a mixer/decks into that.
I also want to be able to take my mixer/decks out and do live sets (without traktor) as I dont like the idea of relying on a computer for a set.
Verdict/Advice !
So! I have come to the conclusion a set of CDJ's and a nice mixer will be great.
Money isn't much of an option but i do not want to overkill myself on stuff that i do not need.
I am thinking CDJ-900's since they have inbuilt soundcards i dont need to buy one for my computer (for traktor) and because they are up todate
and for a Mixer, I really dont know!~!! Not sure if i want 4 channels? Do you guys find you desire having four channels? or do you really just get by by having 2. I dont want to be get into it and a year or so later i realize i want four channels.
Thats my biggest problem, is a good mixer! Really having problems choosing. I dont intend to scratch as I am really into electronic/dance and not so much hiphop.
Please assist and thankyou for all advice given.

Edit/Note: Please note i have searched and tried researching everywhere, but it's just confusing me! Woudl love experienced dj's in a similiar situation to help me out!!!

hi teknikel, welcome to ITM. please take the time to go through the many threads in this forum which relate to the exact same questions you have posted in this one.
i would also like to take the opportunity to let you know about the sticky thread at the top of this forum entitled "Do Not Make A New Thread EVERWithout Searching First!" which should give you a few tips before posting again.
have a nice time on ITM, teknikel!

I have searched this thread, and read this forum all week trying to find answers, as well as googled the $hit out of the internet.
Nothing targetted using the soundcards in the new CDJ-900's for Traktor Pro, and if its a good idea to go that way for my situation...
Also concerned about the lack of hot cue function on the CDJ-900's and experiences with that.
Apologies if it seemed to come off as a generic "what setup do i want" I guess I should have mad a few rough drafts on my first post to make it more clear on what i was curious about.
*Thank you lloyd for your suggestion :)
oh ok well do you use hot cues now? remember the buttons on the 900 can be remapped to do whatever you want in traktor so instead of auto-loop you can just map those to your traktor hot cue buttons.
i reckon 900s and a zero4 for traktor/midi action will do you well with lots of midi fun, but if you want to be ready for clubs before you even get there, you should probably go for an (aussie) industry standard a pioneer setup.

Money isn't much of an option
unless you're going to steal the equipment, might wanna sort this out first.
especially if you are wanting to get CDJ-900's
behringer is your cheap stuff: 4 channel mixers from $290
also check out some diff packs: like this (http://www.storedj.com.au/products/product.php?id=2807)
http://www.storedj.com.au/
http://www.djwarehouse.com.au/
are the best sites to have a look at - you will make a better decision if you try things in-store
good luck :thumb:

lack of hot cues on the cdj900 is fucked, but spicy is correct in saying that if you're going to use them to control traktor, then it really doesn't matter since hot cues will be saved in the software.
question- is record box of any use with the cdj900 in that case? ie. no hot cue buttons?
consider the dn-s3700 since they have in build sound cards as well, and are about $700 cheaper. With the money you save, buy a kontrol X1 and a crap load of music

Thanks Spicy! It's good to know i can use hot cues on Traktor Pro, which is great since I mainly use hot cues for my polished mixes (and not so much live, mainly just loop when i need to)
Im seriously considering the CDJ-900's now! (The 2000's are out of my range)
I have considered the DN-S3700 but i have no DJ-local store here, so testing them out im a bit scared, as if i purfchase and dont like the feel itll suck! I have used MK31000's and like them so least i know what im getting into, thus woudl like to stick to Pioneer for decks!
Question on the Slip-Feature
with the CDJ-900, I guess this is meant to replace the hot cues?
Anyone with experience?
I am under the impression perhaps, they intend that you set a loop up, then slip-jog to the next area and loop into that? Or do i have the wrong impression. So maybe i can get used to that and have "hot cue" for my sets !
I am happy to spend good coin on a setup, my worry is buying something that wont last, and limit my options.
Thanks all for your advice, and taking the time to read my questions. I do apologise for the first post, as it was rushed and did come off very noobish.
Thanks again for the store suggestions :) as i do need to purchase online...!

I suppose the CDJ-900 are intended to be used in conjuction with a DVS like rekordbox (for hotcues)
and the CDJ-2000 are built intended to stand their own (thus the screen)
Only way i can justify pioneers reasoning. Still premium products youd wonder why they the 2000s dont have slip, and the 900 is missing hot cues O.o

i'm still doing it the right way around!
1. start djing
2. stockpile coke + hooker subsitutes
3. become superstar dj
4. ????
5. profit

why isn't there an emotion on ITM yet for "smashing my head against a brick wall"?
