View Full Version : Respect, find out what it means to me.

I am just curious as to whether other people have the same feeling as me.

I am reluctant to call myself a DJ. Basically because I feel that...
*I am not really good enough (those of you who read my other thread will see why)
*The term DJ has become so distorted that most people don't know the difference between a DJ and a producer.
*The stigma attached

I would prefer myself to be called an active music enthusiast :P because really that's all I am doing at the moment, collecting music and finding out what sounds good together. I DON'T EVEN HAVE ANY GEAR YET!!

I would call myself a bedroom banger but I think I would enjoy playing out occasionally? Are there any other people that feel the same? What do you call yourself besides DJ/Your real name/nickname/Wanker/Tool/Poser/Insert other profanities.

I'm not a DJ, but I do DJ from time to time...not because I don't think I'm good enough/stigma/confusion, more that unless you do it as your primary source of income/have a daily radio show/weekly residencies, it's nothing more than a hobby/passion which occassionally pays...it's not what you are, it's just something you do.

But yes, there is also a stigma, and running off at the lips about "Oh, me? I'm a DJ" is so passé and wanky you won't catch me doing that, but it's not the primary reason.

Pffft get over it....

DJ = Disc Jockey...

If you jockey discs... your a dj...

Its not that big of a title, not something that people should brag about (it happens)

but whats wrong with saying, "yes im a dj, i have a few mixes you might like"?

If you race cars on weekends, but goto your 9-5 during the week, your still a Race car driver, just not full time... exactly the same as Rugby player for you local team, you might not be a pro, but fk you can still classify your self as a rugby player...

2 minutes after saying, yea i dj a bit, they will know where ur coming from...

I think I'll invent myself a new title, so pretentious and wanky that the masses will bow in reverence of my almighty ego.

I like the sound of Manipulative Harmonic Convulutionist.

here i come, international bookings

So you're reluctant to call yourself a DJ in case someone thinks you're actually making the music you're playing?

God knows (and he should know as he is one) DJs have been pulling this cotton wool over dance floor punters ears for years!

nah, just one of those 'find out about your tut group' speeches. One girls name is 'Ay' (pronounced 'I') and another is 'yu'...just need a 'me' now.

i have a problem with collecting records/music ... i like to mix a lot of it.

people label me a DJ ... if that gets me hot chicks and free druqs, then sure, I'M A DJ!!!

My name is Kenada, not DJ Kenada. I play music to to people, I get paid. I really like playing music, and often do it for free/fun. I also produce music, originals, remixes and mash-ups.

No need to over think it, and try so hard to not be a cool "DJ" guy, that your invariably uncool due to making such a huge point of it.

I would have thought that giving yourself a dj name was in fact labeling yourself as a dj.

i always though the DJ prefix was given to people who only play other people's tracks , and most producers didn't use it

but then i see heaps of people who don't produce using only their name as the title, and heaps of producer based djs, putting dj in front of their name

so yeah,

i always think its better to not have DJ in there, just have a band type name imo, more fun !

what DJ name? Funkedub?

It's no DJ name ... it's just a moniker for all manner of musical japery. It started life as an email address, then a username ... then just got applied to more and more things.

Sure the term 'DJ' can sometimes sound a bit wanky, but I dont have a problem calling myself a DJ. it's a true fact. I am a DJ, I play out and about at a variety of pubs and clubs. Slackas is totally right imo.

It's only as wanky as you make it sound really... by using DJ tag to elevate your perceived social status. I mean I know I'm a sick cvnt simply cause I am, regardless of whether I'm a DJ or not :P

I've always considered myself a music enthusiast first and foremost, dj-n is just being able to share the music I enjoy with others...

i've got no problem with it. if someone asks me 'are you a dj?' i say yeah i am, but its not really my profession. i think the wankyness comes from people having that YEAH IM A DJ, 'THE FUCK YOU WANT?! attitude..
the only thing that i kind of dislike, is that people think youre just that. a dj.
and it sucks when you make music which occupies a significant amount of your time and
youre just recognised as another dj. but other than that, whatever. its all a social mess :P

I live off the money I earn playing music as a “DJ” but I avoid telling people I meet that I’m a DJ mainly due to people picturing me playing electro-dribble at one love or me in a pink t-shirt and a flat brimmed baseball cap. So most of the time I tell people I repair audio equipment or design sound systems which I do during the week but I don’t earn a living doing it! My mum says she tells people about my record shop and leaves out the fact that it doesn’t earn me any money!

In my mind I think of myself as a music collector and maybe a audiophile but not really a DJ as people picture DJ’s…

i wouldn't mind saying im a DJ if i was raking in the top dollar, but i wouldn't be like IM A DJ. full stop. i'm not that kinda guy anyway. but i dont say im a DJ merely because EVERYBODY is a DJ.. hell, even im a house DJ.. never saw that coming lol
