hey,

im new to the scene however had a passion for djing for quite a while. dont have any decks however been reading non-stop about reviews on what is good and what is not. the main things that i have picked is when buying, u want to save that little bit extra so instead of buying really cheap basic decks, spend a little more and that way as u improve u wont need to upgrade as often, do u agree with this?

also im looking at getting a set up for no more then $3000. the two options im thinking about is either 2 x CDJ400 & DJM 400 or 2 x CDJ800mk2 & korg km202. i want something that i can play around with effects and learn to scratch with yet produce sweet beats. wat is ur opinion? wats decent for up to $3000

cheers

You have done your research, both are fine options...

Now think of:

1. Powered monitors OR amp and hifi speakers

2. Stands to get speakers to a decent monitoring height.

3. Buying your tunes on beatport.com or similar, outlay around $100, should give you a bit to mix with.

4. Check dancetrippin.tv for vids of some guys at work mixing.

cheers. im pretty sure ill get cdj400s and now trying to decide on the mixer whether like Korg KM402 would be better or perhaps DJM400 and buy a mini KP however people are saying their input sounds arent that good so maybe a KP3?

if u can put in some extra ( i don't know the cost of cdj 400's these days) i would recommend that you buy any of the eclers... far better than the korgs/pioneers...

Don't worry about effects until you get the basics down. I've never used effects (not really a fan). And scratching on cd players doesn't sound too crash hot imo.

Thought about digital (Ableton/Traktor)? If so, you might want to consider if the gear you get will work well with Ableton/Traktor.

shit whats the go these days....

when i first started i bought the best value 2 turnies and mixer kit i could find
so i got 2 numark tt1650's and a basic numark 2 channel 3 band eq mixer on ebay for $650
since then ive upgrade my mixer twice - still got the same shitty turntables but the smart upgrades aloud me to go digital (DVS)
still to upgrade my turntables and while not the best drive and torque they work fine and thats over 5 years of solid use
and this has definitely honed my skills - its like a dream when i play on a set of techniques (even the shit ones you get in clubs)

why spend so much money and time reading, looking around etc when you really should just get started - all this time spent could have been developing your skills, which is far more important than having the sick gear that you want just to help you achieve something you havent even started yet

good luck with it all though mate

$3000????

I got my first set up for about $1100....i just couldnt justify spending $3k on a hobby when starting out

seems to me much smarter to buy cheap to start then in 6 months / year upgrade if needs be

there's nothing wrong with a lot of the entry level gear

i've used the analogy before, you wouldnt buy a ferrari if you're still on your L's

All this has been done before, but I agree with pomrocks and djaudiophile, learn to crawl before you learn to walk...who knows, you might A) find you actually don't have the passion for it or B) are just not a naturally adept person at DJing and get mega frustrated and sick of it in a few months.

I learnt on Akai direct drives and some piece of shit mixer, once I knew I was really keen on keeping at it, I bought a slightly better mixer, then some second hand Technics 1200's, then a year or two after that, an Allen and Heath mixer and some brand new MK5Gs...there's no need to jump straight to top end gear with the mentality of "I won't have to upgrade", learning on crap gear makes you a better DJ...plus brand new gears loses a higher percentage of it's value for resale compared to second hand. But some second hand Technics 1200's for $700, in 2 years time, you'll still be able to sell them for that same amount. CDJs maybe not so much with the constant advancement/new models coming out...but still look into second hand gewahs imo.

The only piece of equipment you shouldn't scrimp on is your headphones...IF the day ever comes that you play in clubs, you have to have quality cans...everything else, less invested the better, more money to invest in music, just get whatever you can and get practicing.

Absolutely agreed, especially with the headphones comment. Though I don't think buying Akai DD TT's is the best idea!

first create a reality tv show. When it's done, tour the world standing behind decks, that way you won't need to spend any time learning, and the actual gear won't matter as long as you know how to press play.
