I have had my Sony MDR - V700 headphones for around 14 months now, they have been looked after very well, never dropped and always kept in their little bag.

Last week they literally fell apart in my hands when I was mixing, the left ear piece has detached itself from the plastic frame, the plastic virtually crumbled to pieces and it is impossible to re attach or fix it due to the way they are built.

Prior to this happening I have heard people complaining about problems with this model of Sony headphones but I had always been quick to defend them based on my own experience and the amazing sound that comes out of them. Now I understand what people have been upset about.

I payed over $300 for these headphones and have cared for them, now 2 months out of warranty they are unusable and broken. What is even more frustrating is that the speaker components of the headphones are fine but because the plastic frame and components are broken it is impossible to wear and use them.

I have been told that there are no components available to repair them and that this is something that just happens with these headphones around 12 - 15 months into their use... has anyone else experienced this? What did you do?

I definitely wont be buying Sony headphones again, I have been looking at some Sennheiser HD25's... Does anyone know how they compare to the Sony MDR - V700's for DJ'ing??

Also I am thinking of taking this matter up with Sony, if enough people post their stories here I will forward all the responses on to them with my complaint about their product.

you do realise its a built-in component? have a habit of designing their equipment with eventual break-down dates. The product is unuseable and thus you have to buy the new model... which of course is sold for an extraordinary price.

Every SONY item I have ever owned has been fantastic in the short term but all have fallen apart and declared unrepairable after time (walkman, discman, camcorder, vcr, digital camera, headphones)

The solution? NEVER BUY SONY.

Now, my video/dvd gear is Philips, sound equipment is Panasonic/JVC, and headphones are KOSS - who make undoubtedly the best value for money headphones on the market. I picked up a pair for $90, sound quality is only surpassed by Sennheiser, I've treated these things like shit, they've been dropped, kicked around, sat on, drinks splashed on them and generally abused. They still work perfectly, and they are now 2 years old.

All my other gear has worked perfectly, aside from the Philips DVD which got fried after an electrical storm - and repaired free under warranty.

i had the same thing happen to me but with the v500's.

happened within 9 months and basically they refused to warranty it. so i took it to a service center. they said theyd look into the part, took 6 weeks to get in and install and they charged me $45 for a 20c piece of plastic. within a month the other side had gone and again 6 weeks and $45 (on a $150 pair of headphones). within a month both had broken again and the headphones were in the bin.

poorly designed pieces of shit really.

i now have a pair of technics rpdj1210 which i have treated like shit and come back screaming for more, and a pair of sennheiser hd280pro's which are plain and simply AWESOME.

I picked up a pair of HD-25 headphones to replace my Sonys a few days ago, I cant believe the improved sound quality! I am hearing sounds in tracks that I have never heard before! The depth is incredible!

I'd never buy sony headphones based on past experiences with their discmans and tv's. Everyone I know who has owned a Sony discman has had problems with them. For some reason my discman will no longer work with the A/C connected, I've taken it appart but the component hasn't come loose from the circuit board. Then when I put it back together it stopped working, I figured out the problem and fixed it in the end. Our tv seems to have problems as well every few months, we have a Trinitron and the tube seems to break every year or so, or some other problem comes up.

yeah, I think sony stopped producing quality gear a few years ago... maybe it'll come back to bite 'em when people finally figure out the brand name isn't everything...

Yeah, I have the Sony MDR-V700DJ headphones, had them for about 17 months, and was happily thinking I've had no problems with mine at all... Until I had a closer look last night, and I'm unhappy to report, that yes mine too now have crack starting on each side where the ear piece connects to the frame/head part, once this crack grows on both sides, I imagine mine too will fall apart! not happy!

I have a friend who works in a sony service centre, so I'll ask him for some advice on what I can do, and if it's repairable.

My g/f has the Sennheiser HD25's and they have certainly outlasted the Sony's, but after using the Sony's for so long, I just can't get used to the tighter feel, and smaller earpiece size of the Sennheisers.

Slightly off topic but what do you rate the highest out of HD25's vs Technics 1210's?

Sennheiser and their tiny cord shits me. Great speakers tho.
The 1210's are great. Just got me some after using Sennhsier HD25 SP's for a while.

Note to self : Sony = wack. Evenyone I know who bought those silver Sony clunkers has had them break.

i tried both before i ended up buying the 1210's. and theyre about on par i reckon. i ended up with the 1210's coz i was more comfortable with them, they weren't necessarily better, i just felt more comfortable....

Duplicate post :P

Sennheiser have changed direction in recent years from a full range of professional headphones to a few professional headphones and a shit load of consumer products. Thanks to this you can now afford the low end sennheiser products (which by the way are marketed squarely at DJ's) for a lot less than the competition. This is great for all the DJ's out there but I personally hate it, I dont want to have to pay $400+ for a half decent pair of headphones X( while you DJ's get your products for $150.
