View Full Version : DJing at your own party?

I was having a chat with a mate about this the other day and the topic came up - do you think it's ok to DJ at your own party (with other people, too), or is it just narcissistic show-ponying?

I play at my own parties. As Sam's said, it's the best way to build up a name, plus - it's hella fun. :D

To see the joy of it coming together/how much people enjoy the result/to bring out acts you want to hear.

...but from past experience it really stops you catching up with everyone there :(

If it's your birthday, I wouldn't. Bit rude, should be chatting to the people who have shown up. Get a mate to do it or pre-record something IMO.

If it's a party for the sake of a party (at home or an event), then fuck yeah. That's why you're throwing the party!

Yeah... Go for it.
You can always let someone else have a go if ya wanna break...
Then make your triumphant return to the dex... Applause...

where did the disconnect between being a dj and throwing a party and being a cocksmoking promoter come into effect? Y2K?

Fk yeah, love it! Generally also get another mate or two to have a crack throughout the night, so as to allow for socialising. But there's nothing more fun than playing for your mates and having a rocking night! :)

Do you mean "party" as in your birthday party/engagement party/et al, or "party" as in a gig you've organised and promoted?

Just curious, but really, there's nothing wrong with either, but don't play all night if it's your b'day or something, soclialise/mingle etc, just play an hour or something...as has been mentioned, one of the easiest ways to get a gig is to put them on yourself

Better to Dj than let folks mess around with ipods.

The worst is when people keep cutting eachother off mid song and clearing the dancefloor

Funkedub
30-Mar-10, 03:13pm
Of course yes ... but either have some premixed/recorded CDs/mixes or some other mates who you trust to play so you're not stuck on the decks.

I assume if you mix, you have mates who mix as well ... so there's always more than just yourself to play some tunes.

I'm pretty sure i've been to some house parties where more people have brought records than those who haven't :P

Yeah, have a bash for like 30-45mins, that way no one will get bored and everyone will cheer you even if you are so drunk that you trainwreck every mix,

I alwways go extra crazy when its my mate djing to encourage the dancefloor, so u know u will definetly have some people dancing !

tick.

you do all the hard work, so you more than deserve a play if you're keen (and able to)

taking the peaktime set with your "headline DJ" warming up for you when you've played on a club rig twice before, could, possibly be defined as narcissistic.

i like early sets, but promoting usually meant playing one of the last sets.

And the Award for 'Best Uselessly Insecure Thread, 2010' goes to...

This fucking thing. It's your party, right? Should be full of your friends, right? Good chance to practice in a supportive environment, right?

PLUS - you'll get to tell everyone there 'yeah I'm a dj'. Stop worrying and start fucking playing.

what's worse is when you see the guys running the party market themselves as 'residents'

Why can't you maket yourself as the resident, seiously?
If it's my party, I expect that I'll play most of them. My intention (when starting a party) would largely be to build up a crowd that expects the same flow and tunes that I develop as normal for the crowd.

Asking ITM if you can DJ at your own party? thats a paddlin'.

I don't think you need the OK from anyone here. Just make sure you've got mix cds or some other friends that like DJing that will do it also. Most parties I goto randomly have like 10 amatuer DJs present, that are all itching to mix. and then you get the friends who are drunk and never have dj'd in their life who also wanting to have a go haha forget about how people percieve you and go party son.

I'm with you on that, the ONLY reason I'd go to the extent of finding the right venue, doing all the promotion leg work to get a small monthly gig off the ground would be for me to have regular gig to play, period. I would, however, mix it up lots, not always having the headline set (probably never actually, have guests which do that slot, play warm up's, post headline/closing), but I'd always be playing.

Personally I more took the OP to mean a private party, a birthday bash, or something...if you're talking about an actual promoted gig in a club, play for sure, what's the point otherwise?

no problem playing on your own party, i think the issue comes when you give yourself warmup or the set after the headliner, when there are bigger (and probably better) locals to play that slot..

Usually i'll jump on the 10 till 12 slot or whatever on my own things.

You confuse me... You would take the headline set for yourself then, as there are bigger and better DJs available to rock the warmup or post-headline set? :stroke:
In any case, kinda thought this thread was more about playing at a house party or something? Personal experience shows that it's kind of a "Gotta take a piss" or "Bored, and want some beer" thing that leads to the swapping of DJs.

of course it's ok to dj at your own party. i get your thinking but if i went to your party and you mixed it up for a few hours i'm sure i'd love it (unless it's cheesy shit) :)

when i say warmup, i mean the set before the international/headline act.

na i wouldnt, as said, usually give myself like 10 till 12 or the last set or something...
