I was acutally thinking of getting the 4x2

But is the desk useless if all I want to do is put my decks on top? The reason I say this is because the heigh is 76cm which is the same as the 4x2 shelfing height if it was placed on its side

spend a saturday or sunday and make yourself a custom one. sink it, raise it, used stands, there are some wicked free plans out there on the world wide web and the materials wont cost you more than 200 bucks.

Satisfying as hell too :D

i think they are a great solution for 150 bucks. i have mine on the caster wheels and for me its a perfect height. easily fits my 1200's, 4 chan mixer and 1 cdj

Ditto to putting it on wheels, tis awesome, perfect height, moveable, stores a fucking stack of records...but wait, I could spend more and have to make it myself?!?! :crazy:

I guess its just me, being 6 foot 7 most desks tend to be way to short, plus i like my cdjs rased above the mixer with ym EFX and laptop next to the mixer so for me it made sense to build one.

Yeah, for sure, you can deft get a better setup, especially for you height, making your own...they deft do the job for cheap though...compared to some of the specific DJ tables from DMC/Store DJ etc, they're like 1/3 the price AND more functional in terms of storage!

The desk in the OP is hardly functional as a computer desk, i had one for a few months, most of the open areas are unreachable...

I would stick to the tried and tested expedit 4x2, and u can raise it if your epic tall. p.s.

I'm 6 foot 3 and find this to be excellent height for mixing, no bending over and no sore back. It's made with an Expedit 4x2 and Lack TV bench. Height from floor to bench height is 96cm, and adding the 10 or so cm for gear means the approximate height of the faces of your gear is about 106cm.

That addition is sweet, means 4 pieces of kit + mixer fit...standard Expidit isn't deep enough to have decks battle styles like that.

I'm getting the bookshelf part tonight, and will be putting mine on casters (add's about 20cm to the height) - I'm just over 6ft - measured it up, will be much better than what I've currently got - may take a little while before I can build up the top section though

I'm finding it all a bit low atm - will probably get some bricks/pavers or something underneath to raise it temporarily, in terms of space at the top - i'm probably going to grab one of those "Vika Amon" table tops in the link I posted above, but build a shelf kinda like this one:

I have casters on mine and trust them about 0/10... I have kept them on there (to move it when its empty) and just have a few food cans under it so if it does fail it'll just fall a few mm to them and not ruin the floorboards or cause the whole thing to buckle. I have made a shelf for my speakers which works pretty sweet/cheap and easy and doesn't take any room away from the top. I also glued + nailed a piece of plywood to the back to reinforce it. Sturdy as a mofo.

I put mine on proper work shop caster wheels, rated to 75KG each, from Mitre 10...the only thing I was dubious about was that you're screwing into pretty thin/hollow framing...thus far, it's been fine though, moved it around the house about 20-30 times, going from carpet to wooden floors with no issues.

Adds and extra 10cm to the over all height, too

Exactly... its basically a veneer with cardboard inside... zero strength.

Oh yeah, and with the wheels you get from IKEA (the screws are all in a straight line... when you push it, the wheels will turn the same way which offsets the load from the screws to one side by quite a bit... I only ever move it empty - then when I park it, I twist one wheel to the right and one to the left to centre the load as much as possible.

I should have mentioned my studio monitors are on free-standing stands (one is just left of the picture, out of frame) beside my production rig - when mixing I just turn the speaker to face me, similiar to a booth setup in a club.

Thanks for your rating of the casters - what's the reasoning behind that though? and how much weight have you got on the shelves? I'm not planning to store my vinyl collection there, too much of a pain if I want to spin vinyl, have a table just to the right of the decks with my record crate for that purpose

For the past few weeks i've been contemplating getting the expedit to put my new decks on (finally getting back into DJ'ing again), but wanted/needed something other than a plain expedit to fit my mixer, technics and cdjs.

Have you got an instructional link to build that one?

This is my reason behind not trusting the wheels, at all - 5 cubes are packed with records + turntables + mixer + monitors...

so much weight & chat fixings = fail

Yeah personally I wouldn't trust the construction of the expedit to span the ~1500mm from wheel to wheel, especially when loaded with vinyl. Its just asking for it to buckle in the center imo.

Yeah, 6 of the cubes in the shelf itself are packed full or records, so it's got some serious weight behind it, figured better the exrta weight rating than not enough...what I contemplated doing, but never got around to it, was glueing/screwing an 8mm piece of MDF right across the bottom, then there's more depth to be screwing into and more surface area to be displacing the weight.

I hear ya! Is pretty concerning, but hey, seems to be fine thus far, and it gives way one day, I'll do something like mentioned above to give it more strenght.

Oh, and I put 6 wheels on it, all 4 corners and 2 in the middle, so the weight is pretty well dispersed

From memory that is djwaz' setup, you could PM him to ask for details.

As for the materials/weight distribution, I wouldn't say that it is cardboard. The shelves are solid MDF and the top bottom and sides are 6mm MDF around the edges with an air gap. If you are planning to drill in (as I did, to create a backing/hopefully hold some of the weight and let me have it freestanding) you should take this into consideration.

I have the expedit 4x2, with the castors, but I only bought 2, 1 for each side, and with all my vinyl, it actually snapped it at the bottom.

Got another one, and tried to get more castors to even it out, but ikea said they stopped selling them X( ,so this time, went to the hardware and got some hardwood and made a frame for the bottom, and just screwed the expedit in to it, and put the castors on the bottom again, but on the hardwood.
Hardwood used, was the shit they make houses out of, as I thought that should hold it

Now, I can jump up and down on it if I want and it will not snap and I'm 100KG :hooray:

I bought 8x sets of raised legs for my expedit but never put them on because of how hollow and weak the wood seems to be. I'm 197cm/6'5" so the decks aren't at a perfect height but manageable. I just need to get some damn speaker stands already that are solid and at a decent height (for Rokit 6")

It's a nightmare (I'm the same height), you're better off trying to build some stands that attach to the table to get them at ear level. I had some samson speaker stands and they weren't high enough (although having 8" truth monitors on them they weren't stable at any height).

Put castor wheels on it, and it raises it a nice amount, plenty of footroom, and nice on the back.

I made a frame out of 2x4 for the bottom of mine to make it a bit higher and give it more strength. It's sort of a figure 8 but with another o, if you get me.

Yea, I just did a basic outline of the expedit.

If you are planning on stocking it full of vinyl, and have wheels, I can't stress enough how much you need to re-enforce it, as the expedit is basically really thick cardboard inside.

That be my console... its pretty easy just a cut out MDF frame on top of the expedit, some steel pipes for the speaker and lappy stands...

I use an Ikea Galant desk for my gear + a PC. It's pretty low. Also buckles like a motherfucker.

I'd not recommend it. :)

Might look at the Expedit after I move... Looks like a good setup.

Contemplating buying the Expedit 2x4 shelves, but concerned about the weight of my equipment on them.

(I also intend to use the wheels for added height.)

I have two Technics 1200's, Ecler Nuo 4, plus a Lightsounds CDJ stand - which is relatively heavy - with two CDJ-200's sitting on them.

Concerned.

I did this with my free time on Australia Day, ended up costing about $150-200 all up. I've been a bit worried about the weight in the middle, but apparently my furtniture making friend thinks it'll be fine, even with the shitty ikea pseudo-wood (ps. this stuff is horrible to drill into).

I used 16cm Capita Legs to boost the height, I'm thinking of just getting one of the table tops tho so I have less weight on the middle section.

Anyways here's what I ended up with.

Yeah, I'd put some legs in the middle, too...the wheels on mine with 2 in the middle are sweet, but agree, it's a horrible material to drill into...it's so thin I've actually been contemplating taking everything off it and gluing an 8-10mm piece of MDF to the bottom to give it more strength/substance for the scews to hold on to. Lazy tho :lol:

One of the guys I live with makes custom made furniture, he was horrified by the hollowness of the material, makes it near impossible to safely secure another level without it wobbling, so the top shelf is kinda being held secure by the wall its up against.

That said the price I paid for this whole shelf/expedit combo wouldn't even cover material costs for him to do the same, so you get what you pay for and I'm very happy with it for the price.

I think I've decided the plan of action.

Whilst the width and depth of the unit aren't ideal for my tabletop requirements, I intend to buy some cut-to-size M.D.F. to place over the top, which will hang over the edge about 15cm left and right and 5cm front and back.

Does anyone know of a decent, cheapish, cut-to-size M.D.F. seller?

Check in the MDF part of buntings, the one i went to had many sizes and thicknesses. I was able to find one that suited me a while back :D

How much is your friend charging for the credenda desk?

Remember the Ikea Epedit's are only $120 and don't require any modifying (unless you want to add extra depth for battle style decks)
