i was getting a lift home from my 'place of work' as my car is in being fixed, and the girl driving me home had JJJ on...

...cruising along listening to the usual drivel i had to chuckle a fair bit when i heard something "familiar"

you guys know those little station ID/segues they play? yeah well i got a few chuckles to hear one that was using some of my samples from our album, which has been getting a little bit of play (not much... we suck :P heh heh)

funny stuff

what similar circumstances have you found yourself in, where youve heard music/audio youve worked on in ridiculous places??

im waiting till im old enough to hear some of my music as Musak/general midi sequences in shopping centres and elevators... thatd the the ultimate in psych out

you haven't made it in australia until you hear your track coming out of the open door of a strip club in kings cross.

tracks the bear has been involved with that have made it:

everything you need (v45)
sweetness and light (itch-e)
winner is (southend)
cowbell (code warrior)
make in phunkee (beXta)

Yep. It's funny to hear your music used that way. "Bits" of your songs chopped up in ads on the radio are a cack!

Does "Puppetry Of The Penis" show & movie count!?!?
;D

Also just given clearance to a Just Jeans Miniskirts ad, although if it were for any other item of clothing it'd be a no go! (well, except lingere).

What's the concept? We usually do the audio for those at my work. I'll look out for it.

Don't know much on the concept. All I know is the agency responsible for their ads contacted our publisher for rights.

Digitalboy, if you need a hand getting those girls into the miniskirts, I'm available!

:tripping:

 Reminds me of a story on of the other engineers told me about a time when they had an extremely hot chick in the booth doing foley. They convinced her that her skirt was making too much noise as she was doing it and that she would have to take it off (after they turned off the lights in the booth of course) Well perhaps not being the smartest cookie in the building she did it and halfway through what they were recording of course the lights were switched back on. hillarity for all involved (even the girl apparently)

anyways if we get some pitures in of new mini skirt commercials i'll know the track is yours.

I had a song used on JJJ as a background theme, I was glad about it when I got my APRA return... not huge, but it is better than nothing!!! I suppose its good they're using local acts instead of Moby or the Prodigy, you should ring them and check that they have your details and that they haven't just ripped it off (not that they would, they're government funded so don't really have anything to gain from it!)

anyways, I'll keep an ear out for it...

Its funny you mention the Flat Eric track. I used to manage the duplication/transmission dept of a London post production company. We got that ad in, in varying formats, and had to make about 200 different broadcast masters, which involved the engineers watching the same ad, over and over again for a 12 hour shift. The funny thing was that many of them commented that strangely enough, after the shift they were still not bored of it! Great puppet, great track!

heya

can you explain to me what that process involved, ie the broadcast masters? "in various formats" etc etc?

im clueless to the broadcast scene (im a lowly studio tech and grimey engineer junior sucking soldering fumes or programming synths)

oh yeah as for Mr Oizo i was embarassed when that track come out, he revealed the minimal setup he used to make it and back then i was on a spending spree

i think good on him, i bet he made some good $$$ from that venture.

Broadcast masters are just the actual tapes that are played when things actually go out on the tv. We used to get a variety of masters from the tv company, ie the 15 second, 20 second. 30 second version etc and then had to make copies to despatch off to tv companies around the UK and Europe so that they could play them.

Anything that is going to be played out has to be 100% technically perfect, so that is why an engineer had to accurately make and monitor each one.

That was in about 1998 - I hear things have got a lot more didgital now. I haven't worked in tv since coming to Australia though....

Re equipment - it just goes to prove that its not what you've got, its what you do with it that counts....

Now just one master DAT is made of the track which is the restriped to DigitalBetacam for broadcast on TV. I guess this betacam is then cloned digitally for sending out to the stations. Although there is a company called Dubsat who send out the spots digitally, i think via ISDN or Satellite (not too sure)

I recall reading at the time that "Mr Oizo" was actually the director of those Levi adverts. He has come up with the whole concept, puppet, and knocked the track up in his spare time. From what I recall he also knocked up a rather mediocre album to make even more money from the whole shabang.

This is just from memory, can't be bothered to look it up on the net to verify, but I think he knew where he was going with this.

I find it amusing and admirable that one of the biggest male gay icon Djs and producers in Australia has a track that is the music bed for a tampon commercial.

update on the JJJ saga.... they seem to be loving brisbane lately! our album has been flogged like a wipping boy from whip-whip land and even our good friends Kid Kay Ferris have been thrust upon the nations ears.

of course, our other peeps (its a small cityafter all) Zephyr Timbre are as ever going insanely well and it seems as if brisbane is boiling this summer.... boiling over with beats n breaks like crazy.

thanks to all those who have support Superfluid on JJJ and to all those mystery people requesting The Grape thank you very much. support your local breaks and live acts!

"Superfluid Are The Next Wave According To JJJ
Big ups to super cvibes soldier number 1 Mel in Perth who informed us last week that the mighty Superfluid were featured last Thursday as Triple J's Next Wave band for the day in celebration of Oz Music month. If you were listening you would have heard 'The Grape' a good half a dozen times that day - Bravo to the Superfluid massive and JJJ for playing good Australian music."
