it's just like getting married. get a 'best' man, a bottle of sambucca. and have fun.

SMILE!

if you have fun, then the audience will have fun with you. they'll say things like 'you make it seem easy'.

if your gear fucks up, don't look worried! laugh at your gear, ask for donations to buy new gear, and start again.

and above all

KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID.

I like the idea of the "best man" principle:)

I had sorta thought that a good ally would be necessary for such a journey.

Cheers.

good luck! :)

you will love it. practice doesnt hurt but when it comes down to it, you're up there doing what you love.

im about to go solo for a stint myself so will have to get my head back around all that entails

maybe dig up the "whats in your gig bag" thread on these forums and make a checklist so you are PREPARED and ready to ROCK

or... psytrance

or whatever :P

have fun.... thats what it comes to

first gig was to 600 people who kept askin me to play hip hop after dropping some house + trance... almost got into a fight.. never forget it. then I dropped a DNB rmx of pharoah monche "simon says".. you know, the track "get the fuck up!" .. they didnt know what to do

best advice is :
drink a red bull + just remember everything you practice in your house.. its still just 2 decks and a mixer! only difference is there's people there

so I stand corrected.. even still, if its your own equipment, you should be able to focus in on what you're doin just like at home ..

I will say that it is an interesting experience leading up to doing a serious gig. I have gone through all sorts of possibilities in my head, thinkin about set-up or things that can go wrong.

But, now I feel quite calm and composed and I guess when the "light goes green" I'll enjoy the trip.

As for my style....well.....it is 100% Live. I use several Korg Electribes with loops programmed like samples (except I can tweak like all f*ck) and I just feed them in and go on a journey loosely based around Techno. I guess its fairly minimal like Richie Hawtin but I have breaks type bass lines (which the Korg ER-1 loves to produce) and some acid style synth loops layered in for added excitement.

.......enjoy this trip.......:tripping:

come on kaoss howd it go?

Well.........what can I say????????

During sound check I got the shakes a bit and thought "Oh no!! I don't need that.....it makes it too hard to tweak!!" So I took your advice and had a couple of beers and sat down the back and centred myself. After a short while I was calm again and had also remembered that I was there to have fun:lol:

I was happy with my sound check and thought that all my freqs' were in line OK. Which got rid of some of the worry. So I just sat up the back corner with my moral support buddies and focussed on what I was about to attempt.

Just before I was up I had a really nice feeling and a very centred focus and I remembered what its all about and just got up on stage....took my shoes off.....which is how I like to play and give it my best.

When the crowd first cheered, upon the peak build in my first track, I was momentarily shocked and had a look around to see what was happening. All I saw was a room full of people all on the floor with hands in the air and smiles looking at me. The shock was such a rush!! That only served to calm me down and go even harder.

Although sometimes I found it hard to tweak coz I was dancing too much and I had to settle down so as not to bump the wrong knob etc.

It was the greatest experience I have ever done to date and want to do it again....and again......and again. It was soooo good to get the reaction that I did which has made all the time I have spent working on my skills worthwhile. Now I can push harder and go further than I thought possible.

And by the way.........it is all done with magik...:tripping:

Well done mate, glad to hear that all went well. The funny thing is no matter how nervous you get before you start, as soon as you see the crowd into it, it's all forgotten.

I was going to say if you are really stressing about stuffing it badly during your set, like your cables die or somthing goes terminal. Just take a leaf out of the biftek book, have a dat/cd with a basic track structure set in stone, and look like your busy. Because The Machines Can Do The Work.....

;) ;) ;D ;D

yeah just dont drink too much b4 your set and have to keep ducking back and forth to the loo during your set, like i did at a small rave last year :(

not good, just get as comfortable, try and get in your "zone" if you know what i mean, and have fun!!!!!

its allways good to hear of people actually playing live, in the sense that if they only pushed play in the sequencer nothing would happen. i cant wait till i can get up on stage and play live to a crowd, to see a crowd of peple having the time of their lives because of what you have created :)

Every time I have seen biftek they have been 100% live, my definition of live is any non-linear sequencer/multitrack plus samples and loops. Don't know where you saw them but you were ripped off, just aint the same unless its live.

biftek have been known to have a debatable level of 'live' in their performances.

You can see that they are live. Last time they were off a hard disk multitrack and a few samplers and random synths. You could see the communication between them and for anyone that knows anything it was obvious they were manually triggering the samples and the structure of each song. The set was nonlinear and you could follow their builds and breaks from the mixer work. But the most obvious clue as to they were live were all the "mistakes", samples off timing, builds that didn't cutoff, instruments not being muted in solos and so on. All the things that make a bleep act so enjoying to listen (and dance) to. I know they often don't go live and just play off the multitrack/dat, but simple just don't support those gigs. When theyre live it simply goes off, we even managed to get some middle-aged business men to dance for the first time in a long time :) (it helped that it was around 10 degrees and too cold to just stand there)

just to qualify, at freaky loops 2001 i haven't a clue as to whether they were live or not, but they fucking rocked.....one of the best gigs i've ever seen

well from watching KP live, he manages to put together a set that doesnt seem live at all, even tho you can track the use of controls and the kaoss pad... no noticeable mistakes, it sounded prerecorded but you knew it was live...

no offence... KP, but your set sounded so perfect it's kinda hard to believe it was live (unlike that geekwad with the PC, eh! :D:D)

kaossproject

 geekwad with PC is funny............

I have noticed that there are many geekwads' with PCs' pretending to be live........some are very well known and as far as I am concerned they are FRAUDS!!!

sure they may produce some great sounds on a sequencer then press play and post in EQ etc but thats the extent of it.......this is no different to burning that sequence onto a CD and pressing play and doing the same thing....??!! it would save them a lot of time if they put it onto CD then they wouldn't have to lug around a PC and a ten (??) channel mixer.......

Playing live is extremely different to playing decks, you have to control every sound, the EQ and effects. You have to keep the whole thing running every second of the way and ALWAYS be one step ahead of yourself while still listening to what is coming out of the monitors.........its a juggling act that takes a huge amount of time to master. The structure is very different from writing a track in the studio on a sequencer program.

Then you also have to create the sounds you use and work out how to mix them with other sounds so that every thing is seamless. It can be a severe headfuck that has you wondering what the hell you are trying to achieve:tripping:

And finally you have to practice every chance you get regardless of whether or not you feel like it or not, coz even then you can still learn something new.

I spend sooooo much time on each individual sound to make sure that it has its place in the overall mix, checking all aspects of the sound (waveform, OSC, pitch, PAN etc) then check and check again by way of recording and playing it through different systems etc. I also spend time to work out my combos' which are different tricks and knob movements that i use to create different effects for build-ups etc.

IT TAKES TIME AND IS NEVER ENDING.

..........thats why i laugh at djs who can't even get the levels right with only two (mastered) sources to work with?......they are the djs that are not "there" yet...
