View Full Version : Portable Digital Recording devices
So my iRiverH320 has carked it. Up until now, for the past 7 years, iv used it to record all of my mixes both at home and out and about in club land.
Iv decided against picking up another MP3 player with record in facilities as I use my mobile for mp3 listening now. So Im looking into getting a Portable digital recording device.
What im after is something that will record to high quality mp3/wav with a line in - either headphone jack or with RCA inputs.
A good outboard mic will be needed too, as id like to use it for recording samples and what not for production purposes.
What im wondering is if anyone out there has or uses one? and can recommend or offer any tips?
Im hoping not to spend more then $300, but want something that is durable and works well.
Have sighted the Tascam range of recorders, in particular the DR07 model.

Thoughts, advice, recommendations....? hit me! :D
Oh, and before you flame me, I did a search and not much in the way of these dedicated recording devices came up. Everyone keeps recommending portable mp3 players, which im not interested in anymore.

Hey mate, I own one of these and use it for recording both at home and when I'm out and about:

The sound quality is very good and you can record in both mp3 and wav format. It uses either an RCA input or external mic, and can be run off either batteries or power using a USB input (similar to what you would use for an iPod). Haven't had any problems with it since I bought it, and would strongly recommend it to you.

Im after something that records straight to a solid state drive as high quality mp3 or wav formats, and have a decent inbuilt mic. Do minidiscs do that?

Yeh, looking like im gonna opt for the Tascam model i think. Sure id be able to bargain down factorysound a lil cheaper then what its advertised :)

the minidisk will let you record into it straight to minidisk which can then be imported onto your computer.
no mic on it though but seriously there ridiculously cheap so perhaps get it and have another solution for field recording

Yeh, not too sure about that, as having a mic was one of the main reasons I wanted a recorder. Having to buy another recorder will just be a fuck around. I like the compactness and portability of it all.
If i can pick up one of these Tascam units for $200ish, looks like the best option :)
The guys down at Factory Sound did it for $230 for me. I needed it urgently so an ebay job wasnt really an option. Plus im kind of skeptical with warranties when buying shit off ebay.
Anyway, the unit is awesome. Crystal clear recordings, easy to use, light weight, small enough to fit in my record bag. Win win :)

Nice...sounds like a great unit and a decent price really...when my iRiver E100 craps out, I'll probably grab one of these for records and stick to an MP3 player which is just an MP3 player (as really, 192K .WMA is pretty pants! haha)
nice one jordz! 230 is a nice price too!
hey RK i have an e100 as well. it sucks when recording from pioneer mixers cos the signal is so hot i always get clipping :( grrrr

Shouldnt be the case if you use the record out...?
And yeh, glad I opted for the stand alone digital recorder. I didn't see any point in getting another MP3 player seeing as tho all of my mp3 listening is done via my phone. :)
just out of curisoity, what are the E100s like for recording? do they record to wav? capacity, etc?

8Gb and I've recorded 6.5 hours in one hit, but it's 192K .WMA only...so it's OK, but not great.
Spicy - you can turn the Record Level down...or just don't redline the mixer! :P
got one of these

Decent, holds 2 gig cards, records from the mic or line in, upto 320kbps, which is enough

Damn. Bad quality.
My mate had issues uploading his set to Soundcloud which he recorded on his - came across copyright problems or something. You guys ever encountered that?
Spicy - RED = BAD. haha

haha...I don't even recall my one coming with a proper instruction manual, just stumbled on to it
Anyways, even with the record level lowered, if the channels and master are clipping, it's still going to sound a little shitty, but not the full distortion as when the record levels are high...I generally set mine to Level 5 when I'm recording at home and know I'm only going to 0dB with slight peaks into the first yellow...but if I'm recording when out, especially from a Pioneer mixer, I'll drop it to 3 and seems to come out right even when it's being pushed pretty hard.
I use the M -Audio micro track pro.
Is great for all the purposes you listed, and at a reasonable price for a new one.
