* Where do I change my Avatar?

* How big can a custom avatar be?
150x150 pixels

* What file formats can be used for an avatar?
GIF or JPG or PNG

* Why doesnt my avatar work?
See above. No seriously, SEE ABOVE.

* What if my avatar is too big?
Resize it with Lview/Photoshop/Paintshop Pro, or at www.gifworks.com .

* How do I get an animated avatar?
Find an animated image and resize it at www.gifworks.com and upload it.

* What is inappropriate for use as an avatar?
Stealing someone elses avatar isn't cool. Neither is using imagery that is in extremely poor taste or is pornographic. The moderators decide what is poor taste or pornographic.



Private Messages

Ocasionally you will receive an email letting you know that your Inbox is full. This means that you need to delete some of the items in your private message folders (both the Inbox AND the Outbox count towards this)

Post Counts

Post counts will fluctuate when threads and posts are deleted/removed from the forums. This is normal and simply reflects some of the 'spammier' threads being pruned.

hint for those using one of the animated ones offthe net...right mouse on it for properties, highlight the address then copy, cut and paste in the avatar section of edit options....( must be under 64 x 64 though )

What kind of image file is it?
BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF????

Only GIF and JPG will work.

I wouldnt go that far.... If someone is lame enough to 'steal' your avatar then I'm sure karma will bite them back.

In the meantime take it as an incentive to come up with something individual. Hell.... use a watermark or your name in it. :)

wheres is options --> edit options?

i can see mysettings > options > edit profile, but there is nothing there that lets me add an avatar.

is the 100 posts rule still in effect? i read somewhere else that it wasnt....

Scroll to the top of this, or any other forums page and OPTIONS is the first of those tab thingies sticking out the top of the white bit.

Umm...No..Thats a crock dude...All you'll get is a hyperlink..If you want to get an image onto the actual forum post - you'll have to upload that image from a webspace it is hosted on (ie imagestation);)

I think that if someone has taken the time and effort to make a custom avatar, then they should be the only ones to use it on this web site, unless of course they give permission for someone to use it.

Can't you put a block on right clicking the avatars, so you can't save or copy and paste? I know of a few web sites that do this.

It was just a suggestion, because I have noticed a few people stealing custom avatars, even ones with watermarks on it¿? :tripping: And quite a few people are really getting annoyed at this, that's all. ;)


Also, I haven't been a member for a year, but I do have over 750 posts, why can't I change my custom title?

Anyone with very basic technical knowledge can get past that though, can't they? Just copy the whole screen, paste it into a bitmap file and edit.

i made my own avatar with pictures flashing on and off in flash fx at uni and emailed it to my self, but it emailed as an animatedflash and when i try to save it the only option is a .bmp
and when i open it to save as a URL for the avatar the address is too long and wont let me fit it all in!
how can i change it when i cant save it properly and the URL is too long?
is there a way?

You'd need to get a SWF to GIF converter, or use a capture tool like Camtasia Recorder to create the animated gif.

I knew of an app that decompiles flash files (I used it myself to "borrow" the Full Cycle logo in my avatar from their flash website)
but can't remember the name at all!... Anyway, what mike mentioned will be a much easier way to accomplish your goal as you don't have to reconstruct it into a gif animation frame by frame using a third party animation program..

This issue has probably long since been solved...but anyway...you go into the Publish settings, and select gif, and go into the gif settings tab...then you can set it up to be the right size, and animated and so on..then you hit the publish button and it will create a gif file instead of an .swf

There are some sites which allow up to 80k. Imagine that size with our avatar wars. We could put movie on that.

After you linked the pic with the change avatar button did you press the submit modifications button?

If I may field this one, you'll need to save the photo to your computer then crop out your face (or whatever) then resize it down do 64x64 or smaller. Save it, then follow the above instructions to use it as your avatar.

sorry to be a pain but i was just wondering this as well. warren g and haks asked the same question and they both have animated avatars now!? I managed to do one in adgif but it was an unregistered version and they printed 'unregistered' at the top of everything. Any tips for a punter??

i can't figure out where to change the 'location' field that displays just to the left of this post.

Click Edit Profile. Scroll to the bottom of the page and it's under Additional Information

I'm not certain, but give this a try.

Go to your Control Panel. Click on Edit Options. Scroll to the bottom of the page to the section Miscellaneous Options. And in the Message Editor Interface box, change it to Enhanced Interface - Full WYSIWYG Editing

Promoting you to the next level that allows custom avatars requires a batch job that runs hourly. So no, the moment you hit 100 posts it wont work. ( until the next hour ticks over. )

I think screen resolutions have become high enough now that standard sized avatars are almost emoticon in size (on screens made in the past 3 years anyway).. So long as the current kb limit is maintained there would be little impact on load times too.

DOA you have to be a producer/highly respected to get an avatar other than the autogenerated ones, theres really not that many people with them (but when they do have avs they're usually pretty huge).. you're most probably getting confused with the fact they can go nuts with self promotion & gifs in their sigs though ;)

I think 90x90 is just big enough so that you can get some detail in there without having to resample, but also close enough to the current 100x100 forum/avatar standard that resizing something premade that you've found isnt a complete pain in the arse.

Seconded. Current size avs look like microdots on my home monitor.

As long as sigs remain gif free it won't make browsing painful on the retinas at all.

Running wide screen 22" and dual 17" so screen real estate is not an issue.

Bogging down my load time with poorly compressed gifs however is an issue. Especially when loading several pages at once with 40+ posts. Lrn2compress n00bs.

(Do still have a 15" crt for colour reference... :lol: )

You need to have some quality posts to your name first... 50 post I believe. I don't suggest you spam the boards to get your post count up though.

- Scroll down and click "make me famous" (lol) to save
- Edit avatar again, upload your new pic, make yourself famous etc.

My avatar is different to my profile pic also. Doesn't matter what size your Avatar is, the new design resizes for you.
How come most (well every one I've chosen, but not so much for other users) animated GIFs chunkify and don't display properly?

You need to supply an animated gif at the correct size (150x150) otherwise itm runs a tool that resizes and crappifies your gif. I think you also need to account for height even if your gif is only 100x150 otherwise the gif is stretched vertically/horizontally.

Its more difficult to scale a gif than a jpeg automatically and make it look good, hence why they turn out shit on itm.

I’ve tried a few times Saturday and today to load a new avatar. Including uploading the image from another website, changing the size and memory as according to the thread here, and adding another image. I also tried deleting it a few times with no luck and get this error message instead:
