View Full Version : DVDs on PS2
How come every time I play a DVD movie on PS2 it stretches the image vertically making the image look warped. I have tried going into system configuration and changing the aspect ratios between 4:3 and 16:9 (I have a 4:3 tv), but it doesn't make a difference?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Marcus, i don't know the answer but I had some problems with a PS2 on an older TV.. That may be the problem if your TV is quite old.. dunno tho..
Thanks for the info. My tv isn't too old, but lets just say it's mono not stereo if that helps point out how old it is. :P Can run at 60hz though.

If you have a 16:9 set, type 1 DVDs will have bars on the side if you select "normal" mode in your tv. If you choose "full", the screen will be filled but the image will be stretched (everybody will look fat).
With type 2 DVDs, you need to set your TV to zoom. It will fill the screen but you'll lose some resolution.
Finally, for type 3 DVDs you need to set the PS2 to 16:9 and the TV set to full, and the screen will be completely filled at the best possible resolution.
Generally, if you have a widescreen TV, you will want to set it to 16:9 so you get all of the picture info on screen, otherwise you may have some of the top/bottom cut off. If you have a 'normal' TV, you would want to set it to 4:3.
Check the back of the DVD case for the aspect ratio. Most DVD's are not 16:9 format, but are even wider, say 2.35:1. (The chances are very high that the movie is 2.35:1 ratio, or to put it another way 23:9. ) So to see the whole picture, you have to have bars at the top and bottom, although not as big as on a normal 4:3 tv. You can also 'zoom' the picture on most tv's to fit the screen, but then you will distort the image.
Did I confuse you?

Make sure your DVD's don't get a scrap of dirt on it tho.. Mine seems to be a tad sensitive sometimes...

i have had to put my ps2 in for numerous repairs it doesnt play squat only ps1 games
it was one of the first ones released i heard they where buggy??
Okie dokey, all this advice. Basically I don't want my DVDs to fill the screen, I perfer the bars at the top and bottom as that's how the movies are meant to be viewed. But I have a 4:3 TV and when I stick in DVDs that are 2.35:1 (not 16:9 enhanced) the ps2 automatically stretches the video upways (making the people look skinny). I wihs I could just stick the movie in and it play normal. I'vehad this thing happen on another friends ps2 too. Oh well. :)
dunno about you but i found it a help to turn the TV off and back on again

i had the same problem,
when the moive is playing press stop, then bring up the setting menu on screen, and choose your screen setting. Then press play
While the movie is playing you can't press the settings button

ps2 DVD player sucks dick, kinda like the ps2. Try watching a dvd on the xbox and notice the difference in quality. The regret that you bought a ps2.

yes,
the driver shipped originally worked fine, however the region code stuff was completly broken :)
so sony issued a new driver in the rev2 playstations and this one appears to have choppy playback issues.
they fixed this and released a completly fine driver with the remote control. (and rev3 ps2 shipments)
now, whether this was intentional (ie to get people to buy the remote) or not is unknown. I personally had no issues with dvd playback before getting the remote (and the new driver).
i heard something about this problem only effecting dual layer dvd's .. who knows.. im yet to encounter a problem
and as for the xbox.. at least the ps2 lets you play dvd movies out of the box.

i dont see how sony are ripping you off when you have to pay 50$ just to be able to play dvd's on the xbox anyway.
you end up paying the bill tax, or the sony tax. take your pick, or even choose both!
hell, when are panasonic bringing out the gamecube / dvd player thingy theyve got out in japan?
either way, neither box is intended to replace an semi decent dvd player. but who cares 350$ (not including the tax of your choice of course) gets you more fun than youll ever get out of a semi decent dvd player.
unless of course your uncle imports those dirty european films ;)

and the only tax I'm paying for games is $33 a month for the Video Ezy games club and I've almost got every game there. In fact I'm paying $11 as I'm going thirds with 2 mates.
