View Full Version : Help me pik a Wine ??

Just thought I would ask all of you if you know of any good wines..?

I tend to get a bit bewildered walking into a bottle-o >> with the amount of variety and price ranges, it makes picking a bottle a long and strenuous decission making process I would rather skip >> Being one to make a quick decission I usually just go for the ones I know... A couple of my Fav's are >>

Houghtons >> Cabernet Sauvignon
Evans&Tate >> Classic White
WolfBlass >> Cabernet Merlot

Surely there are more at a decent price range that would go nicely on a Sunday arvo Pik-a-nik...? I'm sure that the cultured ITM Crew have got a few bottles up their sleave... If you havn't already drunk 'em that is ;)

Any of the Mad Fish range is good
Tim Adam's Shiraz is not bad value
Amberly Chenin would be my pick for a picnic drink :)

I have had Amberley Chenin Blanc Befor >> mmmmmmm It is nice !! It's pretty pricey though $16plus I think...

$16...you cant even get a good bottle of water for that.

brad

I'll start you off with a couple of good white wines under $20:-

Peel Estate Wooded Chenin (if you can find it)

Leeuwin Estate Prelude (I don't normally like "Classic Whites" and I think that Leeuwin is overrated generally, but this one's not bad)

Grosset Polish Hill Riesling (probably a touch over $20 though)

if you're going for cheaper wines which have surprising quality:

richmond grove (limited release) cab sav (around $19). if you can find the '97 grab as many as you can. this wine is quite simply a freak. its oak maturation, fruit composition (with excellent berries and slight licorice) and finish is fantastic. personally i have a dozen of the 97's cellared.

capel vale sauvignon blanc (white label) (around $16). my fav cheap sav blanc. its got a nice measure of fruit, with excellent finish.

woody nook sav blanc (around $18). a quite good sav blanc similiar to the capel vale, but with a slightly dryer finish (great for ceasar salads).

if we're talking decent wines, then you can't go past :

lleuwin estate sav blanc (art series) 2000 (around $57). superb sav blanc that excels in its exquisite finish. the only problem with this wine is how fscking hard it is to find it in the same state which it was made.

orlando st hugo cab sav 1997 (around $43). great cab sav, with a nice oak finish with a slight choccy flavour. nice stuff for a special meal (since its not too expensive to get three bottles of it to see the meal out).

melba select 1994 (roughly $90). absolutely fantastic melba blend. deep tar and berry flavour that takes at least 45 mins of breathing (decanter is preferable) to come out.

my all time fav red - john riddoch cab sav 1996 (you don't want to know). all i can say is that its one of the worlds greatest vineyards, and this vintage was superb.

OK, if we're not restricted by price:-

Mountadam Chardonnay (not that expensive, but bloody good)

Peel Estate Shiraz (thebar and I knocked off a 1986 bottle last Friday. I think it was too much for his girly tastes though...)

Pierro Chardonnay

Henschke Hill of Grace (Duh)

Rosabrook Shiraz

Saltram Metala Black Label Shiraz

Cullen Cabernet Merlot

Petaluma Riesling and Chardonny (duh x 2)

Charles Heidsieck Blanc de Millenaires

Goundry Cab Merlot

Banrock Station Semillion Chardonnay

hey, are people interested in combining in buying a dozen bottles of decent (around 20-35 a bottle) wine each month?

i think it would be a good way of ensuring to collect some promising wine (well thought out choices from recent releases) and lay them down for five years.

Sorry I am dead against the use of needles by non-medically trained people. Wine also contains many contaminants that could cause all sorts of problems.

If drinking wine isn't doing it for you, a couple of drops in an eye.

*My useless contribution to this thread is now done.

Brad - Im impressed - you certainly know your wine.

I would have to recommend Leeuwin Estate however since I work for them I will recommend others -

Seppelt Chalambar Shiraz ($18)
Hardys Tintara Shiraz (98 is best)($35)
Starvedog Lane Shiraz
Wynns Black Label Cabernet (28)
Forest Hill Chardonnay (18)
Cloudy Bay S.Blanc (25)
Cullen Cab Merlot (80)
Petaluma Coonawarra (40)
Leasingham Classic Clare Shiraz or Cabernet (40)
Leasingham Bin 61 Shiraz (bargain 18)
Tamar Ridge Riesling (20)
Grosset Polish Hill (but dont drink for at least 10 years)(35)

For bargain drinking I reckon Houghton White Burgundy is a bargain - let it sit for a couple of years too and it gets quite cheeky.

Sorry my post was in reference to a thread of Uzi0344's on the general forum, where she refered to needles as piks. As she is asking for help piking a wine here, I had to point out my concerns as wine has a lot of imputities in it so could lead to blood disease.

Ethanol would be a far more intelligent choice as it is far more pure but even then I think drinking alcohol is the far more intelligent option as the side effects of this are known.

If my posts break forum rules feel free to delete or modify them. :)

As far as wine goes my favorite is the
Savingion Semmilon Blanc from Redgate in Margaret River.
Its about $18 but a very nice white.
Or the Goundrey Unwooded Shardonnay about the same price

The Mad Fish Premium Red is also very good.

Or the Xanadu "Succession" is a nice blend of Reds.

If your looking for something more local like the swan valley
then Riverbank Estate Wines are great.

My personal opinion is dont waste your money on Art Series Sav Blance - go for Siblings Sem. Sav at almost half the price.

Robert Parker (world's most influential wine writer) cant be wrong - he gave the Siblings 91 points. Yummy lunch time fare. If you like your sem sav blends a bit more oaky I reckon the Cullen Sem Sav is hard to beat.

A nice rectangular box of Fruity Lexia never goes down badly. Tops if you mix it with a bit of fanta. Probably goes down best if you're on one knee and have a few people singing the national anthem around you.

And of course, there's the classic Coolabah. What can you say about this superb drop that hasn't already been said?

Brad damn straight it is, we had a few bottles a couple of yrs ago after we dropped in at the start of a harvest and helped out for a couple of hrs. (apparently it all has to be picked at the same time, with the same moisture, the same temperature etc.)

we left with a couple of bottles of the chardonnay which like i said before is wiked although a little expensive.

If your going down south and youve got a little cash, drop into driftwood for lunch, I think it has the best restaurant in terms of price, food and snottyness ie: you dont have to wear a suit to feel comfortable.

Have a look at sandalford they have some great wines, so do madfish/howard park, vasse felix is a little la de dah but their classic dry white is a great dinner wine, im not really that into it but if you just cruise around with a map that you can get from the tourist agency youll find some great vineyards.

I cant remember her name but go and see the scottish lady that runs the cellar door at moss brothers near yalls the Moses rock red is filth, one of my favourites.

hmmm.. end rant.

at that price id defn be asking the guys at vintage cellars/liqourland. i'm partial to a dourif at that price but theyre dry and not available most liquor stores.

Liqourland is prob the worst place to buy wine. Theyl do big purchases through a small number of big wineries which cater for commercial large scale retail. You miss out on a lot of good of wine this way.

Quaffers is the biggest wine place i seen but im sure theres good ones.

My all time fav white atm is John Kosovich (i thin unwooded chardonnay)

for reds give san giovese a try its an italian variety that a lot aussies are getting into these days.

Yeah I guess it depends what area the Liquorland is located in.

Ive always thought Aussie winemakers have been making reds that are just way too heavy and rich. I remember the wines in Italy were just so much easier to drink and didnt give you that tiredness and headache u can sometimes get from heavy reds.

Anyone know some good wines either retail or direct that are easy to drink and light reds?

try sangria, wines like brown bro's dolcetto & syria, tarrango or their new one cienna, nova tickled pink.lambrusco's, any rose will be lighter styled.. most of these are lower in alc. vol around 8-11% (besides the rose's)

As someone who runs an "independent" (ie not owned by Coles or Woolies), don't trust those places. You got generally people there who only drink beer/bourbon and will sell you what's on special.

As for a sweet red, the most popular is Brown Brothers Dolcetto & Syrah, which is sweet and can be drunk chilled and is vpopular. About $13-15 depending on store. Otherwise there are some decent "rosé" - suggest Oakover Rosé (if you can find it) @$11 or Xanadu White Cabernet $11.
For non-rosé, not too many on the sweet side. Try Baldivis Est Merlot ($10-11) for a nice soft red, or go for Smith & Hooper Merlot ($15-18).
OR - Georges Du Boeuff Beaugelois ($13-16) is a decent light Frenchie:)

Yea Jen, Xanadu White Cab is.... think a decent red flavour but no tannin (ie dry taste) and chilled.

Good one just tried is Yering Rosé, made from Pinot grapes and has a hint of cherry, def great on a warm night..... but prob not where you are....

Sparky reds are tricky, have a bad one and it is goodnight red rover. For Aus ones, Peter Rumball Spark Shiraz is the pinacle, @$23 not too pricey and the taste is fantastic (but beware his Spary Merlot - wierd!!!). Under that, you kinda go to Hanwood Spark Shz or McGuigans Spk Shz @ $11 or soo. Or go to the classy end darling - Moët & Chandön Sparkling Rosé (the only thing they have worth going "darling" over) is fantastic.
