Cabineer,
Brisbane has had a community frequency (97.3FM) since about 1998, and it ha splayed dance (of the predominantly commercial variety) fromt he four community aspirant stations - Wild, Pulse, Switch and Groove, each slightly different to the other.
The trial period has ended and the licence has not been awarded to any of the four dance music stations - Family FM have been awarded the licence. Currently we have public broadcaster 4ZZZ which plays patches of dance music, on programs such as Crucial Cutz on Saturday nights (occasionally DJAM Sandwiches as well) or the various hip hop shows such as Urban Method or Funk Yard. In the past on the Gold Coast Australian Dance Radio has operated on 1620AM and now we have successful Sydney station Rhythm FM, broadcasting on 87.8FM, utlising a narrowcast licence.

The dance music street press is Scene Magazine. Besides being Brissy editor here I am also staff writer at Scene. If you have nay queries plaese don't hesitate to get in touch with me.

cuebase hey! ooh can't wait to hear what u squeeze out of it

umm this may be a dumb question, but what's Family FM? is that a new one since I left or did it come out of the blue? is it anything to do with the club, or does it imply family-style listening?

Yep, Jay P's on the money, Family Fm are a Christian-oriented station who have been running, quite professionally I might add, for a number of years on 96.5FM, now permanently on 97.3 FM.
It is disheartening though that the other aspirants were hardly considered, not sending a good message to the youth of today.
If a government wants youth involvement and participation, they're not putting out the right signs by limiting both their voice and their chance to participate through community radio stations.
Conspiracy theorists may want to note the strong religious beliefs of Senator Richard Alston,a man who had a key role in determining the licence.
It's not all negative though - developments are afoot in radioland and Rhythm FM up here is getting stronger by the day.

cosmo,
when wild, pulse, switch & groove were shutting down they were making noise about picking up an AM freq - did anything happen of this or was it just pipedreams? as for Rythym 87.8FM, i cant tune into the bastard - what gives?

UndaDa Influence, Pulse were talking of switching to AM and I think they were already using this arrangement over the past 12 months when the channel sharing was still happening. I can't remember the frequency off-hand,
but from memory it's at the upper end of the dial, and couldn't be too hard to find amongst all the talkback segments, race calls and top 10 hits of 1956 (incidentally a good year for rock 'n' roll).

Kath, Rhythm is slowly but surely making progress up here. Signal strength is improving, and there is finally some much-needed local content. So far DJs such as BJ, Miss Tracy, DePorsche and myself have jumped behind the decks for some Brisbane mixing antics, and there's plenty more to come...

FYI For all Brisbane Radio Llisteners

Rhythm FM 87.8 Brisbane Gold Coast
Family 96.5 FM - Brisbane - Youth Christian Orientation
97.3 - Joint DMG/ ARn station who recently bought the frequency for 67 million

As far as Pulse, Switch and the others I believe they have applied for the AM community liscence, however the ABA said on thier website that they are waiting on more info before making a descision.

Cheers
