View Full Version : Lucien Foort - Opinions

For those who were there, what were your impressions of Lucien Foort?
What were your impressions of the overall night and venue?
Personally I thought he played some great tunes (such as a Humate mix of Lio - 'Rapture', X Press 2 - 'Smoke Machine') but was let down early on by the lack of a working monitor speaker, with no one from the venue in sight to help him out.
Eventually everything was fixed except for one of the already blown bass bins, which made a really annoying popping sound throughout Lucien's 3 hours of bliss. Despite other hiccups (such as security menacingly telling a couple of trainspotters to get away from the booth, and Lucien promptly telling him where to go!), the night was enjoyable yet met with mixed reactions from others who were there.
Many pointed to the fact Lucien was on in the back room of the club and the main dance floor seemed to enjoy many more people, busting some moves to the sounds of commercial dance hits such as 'Lady Marmalade' - hmmm :\
The venue (R-Bar) is very swish and new, and most people commented it would be a great place to hold more touring international DJs.

ooohhh, I didnt know Lucien had a gig on in Brisbane!
I'm going to miss him this w'end in Melb, tho' I heard he really rocked it in Melb last yr. Missed him that time too cause I arrived the weekend after his gig.
How bizzare that it was at R-Bar, yet he was in the backroom :/ Not a good tale you've told Cosmo :( Oh well...I wont be able to give my opinion cause i'm swerving Slinky this w'end. I will try to catch Lucien *next* time!
i would have loved to have cught him - its a bit hard to get me out on a week night though !!
so, who were the support DJ;s for him ?
there was no mention of this in the street press
also, who played in the main room ?

Jay,
there were no "support" DJs as such, at least none from the brisbane progressive mafia. Some of us were in the audience though, mostly grimacing & cringing at the track selection from the residents (J-Lo & the aformentioned "Lady Marmalade") & feeling slightly embarressed for both Lucien & Brisbane.
The R-Bar had all the atmosphere of the very worst nights at Viva. Has potential but they need to get a clue. And a better sound system.
Lucien, on the other hand, was damn tight & I'd have to agree with Fergus' estimate that he was better the Nick Warren. Further testament to GateCrasher's move into more credible progressive territory. I was wishing he'd played at the Monastery on Wednesday night & the R-Bar had done Jules on Thursday night instead.....

On the matter of support DJs, there was apaprently some guy called Graham, but as Mr. Firesprite-Lieb said, there really weren't any recognised Brisbane club spinners - it appeared to be more tailored towards a mainstream sound anyway.
As to Jay P's comment that he didn't see anything about it in street press, there were 3-4 full page full colour ads advertising it in Scene Magazine running through consecutive weeks, as well as regular listings for about amonth in Club Mix, at least four photos of Lucien over the past couple of months and a listing in the page three Party Calendar. The only thing Scene Magazine couldn't get from Lucien was an interview.
Polecat - Lucien is hoping to return to Australia quite soon:)

Yeah I saw all of the ads for the night - what I was reffering to is they did not list any of the other DJ's playing in any of their advertising.
If R-Bar really wants to make a go of it they really need to involve some DJ's like all of us !!!

JayP: I agree, you boys should have been top of the list, but I think the venue had some genre difficulties.
For instance, if one examines the poster for the event closely, below 'Lucien Foort (Netherlands) ' there are three icons, all representing the text below them.
The names of the three icons? Electro, Drum 'n' Bass and Disco, none of which poor Lucien even approached playing.
Mainstream appropriation of dance music makes me giggle, or bash my head against the wall, depending on how you view it.

Oh dear, poor Lucien.... Oh well, I guess he can look on the bright side when he checks his bank balance!
C

Woah, don't know how my chart ended up here, but yes, Jay P is right, you can expect a 20 deck trainwreck mix of all of the above records at Mantra on Saturday night. However I won't be able to play any of the CDs as a certain club seems to be missing certain decent DJ CD players;)
Methinks I'll leave the 20 deck DJ stunts for the adventurous or the publicity-hungry.

after the rosie's makeover to the r-bar, they have made some bad mistakes. i went there once on a sunday night and the place looks much better now (yes, unfortanly i have been there before..). they still attract the same crowd, no wonder with the music they play there. i was really looking forward to a really cool place in the city (since i live pretty close - spring hill), but so far nothing has changed but the interior - which is far from enough. it is really strange to see a great dj like lucien foort coming to a venue like that, while a cool club like the family is going to host darude. if both clubs would focus on the image they are trying to create, they would have exchanged those gigs. but, i understand, there is this little thing called money.
