::: pH3 :::
pH3 is a Brisbane-based trio who have been performing and recording
since April 2001. The pH3 sound flirts with most genres of modern
experimental musics - such as harsh noise, loop-based electronica,
concrete, ambient, free-jazz, and even post-rock - yet should remain
uncategorised. The heart of comprehension here lies in the interplay
between the electronic and acoustic elements that make pH3's sound
collages whole. Although improvised there is also a fundamentalist
approach to playing amongst the members - no noise is wasted, the
*combination* reins supreme.

pH3 try to give every live event its own distinct personality by
continually exploring the capabilities of their instruments and the
dynamics of the given venue. A single set will contain a variety of
textures fluctuating from soothing to disturbing, earthly to gothic,
rhythmic to chaotic and back again. Be sure to catch pH3 live this
year. Check http://listen.to/ph3 for updates and mp3s.

pH3 have received airplay on ABC Classic FM's 'New Music Australia'
as well as being featured on Brisbane 4ZZZ radio. Recent appearances
have included a floor-rumbling romp at the annual darkwave 'Adnoctum'
event, as well as a disturbing noise collage in the carriageway of
Brisbane's MetroArts as part of 'Small Black Box' (curated by sound
artist Andrew Kettle).

pH3 are:
Stuart Mackey - drums, percussion
Scott Sinclair - guitar, radio, effects
Gordon Duguid - synthesizer, effects

::: The Hive :::

The Hive is a three piece consisting of Tony Buchen (bass); Will
Frasier (keyboards, samples) & Lachlan Brahe (electric & acoustic
drums).

The members or The Hive began their ambitious project in 1998.

Lok, Will & Tony arrived at this point through an organic process -
they were always live musicians specialising in the art of
improvisation. But they were each deeply interested in drum &
bass, hip hop, trip hop & deep house. They listened intently to
artists such as Kruder & Dorfmeister, Roni Size, Squarepusher,
Nightmares On Wax, Digable Planets.

The secret of the live transition was that there wasn't any. The
expression was very much a natural one, a rare collaboration of
musical talent culminating in a truly unique experience. Irresistable
bass ridden grooves that encourage punters to take to the floor
wherever they play.

The Hive's live reputation quickly developed in Sydney & Melbourne.
Inviting guest vocalists and instrumentalists on stage for each show.
The Hive frequent Australia's premier venues, clubs & festivals.

The Basement (regularly to capacity crowds), Revolver, The Esplanade
Hotel, Chinese Laundry, Bass Code + Glenworth Valley, Vibes On A
Summers Day & Big Day Out festivals. Recent times also saw them play
to capacity crowds with Herbert & Asian Underground legends
Asian Dub Foundation.

Curiosity Flow, The Hive's debut album, was recorded in the
quintessential Australian suburb of Hurstville in Sydney's South.
Ricky Pannowitz, combining the eccentric talents of hip-hop producer
and sports radio expert lent us his studio and his time for the
recording which took place over August-November 2000. Rick's Suburban
Voodoo Studios is actually a hand made shed in the back of a garden,
complete with a live room (essential for The Hive's live drum
sounds), heaps of old-school gear such as quarter-inch tapes
machines, analogue keyboards and lots of new digital stuff. This
environment helped us commit an organic, warm sounding recording to
tape *11 tracks in total, all of which appear on the album.

The tracks for the album were written over the course of 2 years,
from when we released our first EP The One and the Prime. Unlike
Thrill Popper & Curiosity Flow (Inertia) the One & The Prime is
available through MGM distribution.

"Curiosity Flow" - track by track

1. Pan Animal: This track came about as a result of a live
performance at Bar Open during our first tour to Melbourne. The tiny
bar with its cushioned floor, packed with great people digging the
tunes inspired us to write this neo-latin groove. The audience named
the track for us - one guy shouted out 'Pan', another 'Animal' -
and Pan Animal was born...

2. Cosmic Oversight: We were playing this as an instrumental since
the first couple of weeks the band got together back in 1998. It used
to have a pentatonic, chinese sounding bass and rhodes melody, but we
scrapped this in favour of Elf Tranzporter's awesome
American/Australian/Ragga style vocals. Lok and Tony have both worked
with Elf when he was with legendary Australian Hip Hop crew Meta Bass
n Breath.

3. One and The Prime: The title track from our first EP - we put it
on the album to honour our early days of playing together and because
we didn't think the track got the attention it deserved - and we dig
Daddy Chester's vocals.

4. Thrill Popper: This was also played as an instrumental for a years
or so - it was called C House (it was a house track in the key of
C...). We gave Victoria White the lyrical idea of Thrill Popper, and
the tune just fell into place - it remains in our set as a remenant
of our experimentation with playing live house grooves.

5. There, On the Roof: This track was inspired by Lalo Shiffrin's
dark, funk-ass soundtrack to Dirty Harry, starring Clint Eastwood.
This is Will and Tones' favourite track on the record - as it
explores the relationship between 1970's funk, drum n bass and hip
hop.

6. Reiby's Blunts: Named after smokey post-gig moments spent in the
laneway where Sydney's famous jazz club, the Basement, is situated.
Its just a funk jam with some nice reverse rhodes samples we invented
by accident.

7. Yes, I Bet You Have: Inspired by the famous line delivered by Han
Solo just before shooting Greedo in Star Wars, this tune was a
favourite in our early live sets. Lior Attar's vocals give this funky
house track a Jamiroquai kind of sound.

8. Menage a Trois: A relaxed groove with flute melody. This track is
a nice example of Will's ability to take a live jam and re-compose
his keyboard tracks into a multi-layered montage of sounds.

9. More Pi: This was the first track we wrote and recorded especially
for the album. It is also the first time we experimented with playing
drum n bass on a VDrum kit (advanced electronic drums). Lok nailed
it as usual. Live, this is a hard, dirty funk-inspired drum n bass
track. The recorded version is much more chilled.

10. The Mordechai Tapes: This track is the only one that hasn't really
changed in structure since the day we wrote it. We were cheered on at
a Newcastle gig (Industrial city north of Sydney) to do an encore and
we had run out of tunes, so we got on and banged out this asian-
underground style groove with the traditional Hebrew
prayer/song "Avinu Malkainu" over the top. Getting Lior in to do the
vocals was the easiest choice we had to make - he nailed it in two
takes and they continued to inspire us while mixing them. The result
is an epic track.

11. Baggsman: Combining some very retro 808 drum sounds (played live
of course) with a Prince-inspired 80's funk break down, this track is
glued together by a beautiful sample of a black preacher doing his
thing at a Civil Rights Movement meeting in the early 1960's. The
recordist, legendary American folk music archivist Guy Carawan, was
kind enough to grant us permission to use the sample. He was arrested
several times while recording these and other sounds at Civil
Rights meetings in the American South.

Curiosity Flow aptly ends on this note - a serious committment to the
recording of live music.

Also, try and grab a copy of the limited release THE MORDECHAI TAPES,
THE MORDECHAI TAPES featuring LIOR ATTAR (only 500 copies).
Unfortunately I don't have a copy yet, but as soon as I do, I'll try
and feature it as well.. Here's some info on it to whet your appetite:

2000 / 2001 has been an exceptional time for The Hive. From the
release of Cosmic Oversight, then Thrill Popper, followed by the much-
anticipated availability of their debut album Curiosity Flow, it's
been nothing but peaks! Sell out shows on their current Curiosity
Continuos Flow Tour (SA, sold out well prior to their arrival in town
last week) + the guest spot for Nitin Sawhney at The Enmore last
month (played to a full house) [ed: this was an excellent show! sent
shivers up my spine and had the crowd dancing in their chairs and on
the small dance floor in front of the stage - they were the perfect
compliment to Nitin Sawhney] as well as performing at the recent
Dance Music Awards in Sydney [ed: more dancing in the seats!]
indicates that they must be doing something right!

Not long after the extensive exposure still being received by
Curiosity Flow and the current focus track Yes, I Bet You Have comes
the release of the Mordechai Tapes Remix E.P.

Featuring five tracks, the E.P. showcases alterations to both the
title track & the aforementioned Yes I Bet You Have, both subjected
to radical re-workings by Lachlan Brahe, Tony Buchen, Will Frasier &
Curiosity Flow co-producer Ricky Pannowitz.

The Mordechai Tapes further highlights the musical range that is Lior
Attar. His ear piercing vocal delivery is totally spell binding.
Reciting what is in fact a Hebrew prayer, enhanced by driving drum n
bass rhythms, a funking hip hop bass line, and Indian based sitar
keyboard lines (all played live of course) the result is a truly new
musical experience. Call it world, call it beats, call it what you
like, it's a bold move in anyone's terms and there aren't many acts
within our shores that could get away with it. In the live set it
really takes you somewhere!

1. The Mordechai Tapes (Radio Edit)
Getting this epic of a track down 4:10 was a real challenge for the
guys. The result is seamless.

2. The Mordechai Tapes (T-Bu Mix)
Tony Buchenšs mix is based on nu-jazz latin rhythms and features
vocal
samples recorded on the road with Sydney DJ Nick Toth and on Arabic
radio in Paris. His wah-wah bass solo is freakish.

3. The Mordechai Tapes (Scope Mix)
Will Frasieršs production on this mix has a unique rock flavour to
it. For this mix, Will got Lior back into the studio and recorded the
whole vocal again in a harsher, more aggressive style.

4. The Mordechai Tapes (Deep India Dub)
Ricky Pannowitz, who co-produced Curiosity Flow with The Hive,
constructed this smooth version of the track using field recordings
from India, made by James Stuart (who recorded The One and the Prime
EP for The Hive). One big family.

5. Yes: I Bet You Have (3 Stripe Mix)
This Lachlan Brahešs fucked up version of the bandšs unexpected
radio
hit. Here, Lok decided to go somewhere between Aphex Twin and 80s
electro. His electronic drumming on this track is awesome.

6. Yes: I Bet You Have (The Lo-Cal, Hi-Val, Happy-Pack, Quick-Fix
remix) The name says it all * Despite his serious demeanour on
stage,
Will Frasier does have a sense of humour

::: Demon Tea Recordings compilation "Not my cup of Tea" :::

Not my Cup of Tea is the long awaited 2nd compilation to come from
the land of Demon Tea (http://www.demontea.com), A Tryptamine fuelled

this month. Tea Chairs provide a beautiful morning track, and the
compilation is rounded off Byron style, with Orbit Constructions
(Luna Orbit, Digital Psionics).

::Hydatid::

Hydatid is David Loose. He has been creating electronic compositions
and playing live in his home town of Brisbane, since 1997. During
this time, David has recorded four full length CDs, which he has
distributed to Australian radio stations, independant record stores
and record labels. His songs have featured on a number of Brisbane
compilation CDs (released in Australia), and have also received
nation wide air-play.

Hydatid's sounds have been created through a combination of software
and hardware and are an exploration of digitalism. No analog
equipment is used. Digitalism is a philosophy of sound creation, and
exploitation of attributes which are uniquely digital. The sounds of
clipping, lowered bit resolution physical modelling synthesis, wave
editing, algorithm distortion etc. These compositions are
uncomfortable, disturbing, largely unstructured, yet deeply
layered. The sounds sprawl non-linear, evolving, self-replicating.
Melodies are fractured, detuned. Highly compressed data streams;
corrupted. Meanings unretrievable.

Hydatid has played at various clubs and art festivals around Brisbane
and Australia including Electrofringe at Newcastle 2001, ADAPT 2000,
and Mantra Brisbane.

HydatiD's new CD "Son You" is available online at
http://www.crispydisc.com (only $9.90!) and Butter Beats in
Brisbane. Hydatid can be contacted via email : hydatid@hotmail.com
