Common Factor plays house and a little techno i think, he's a Chicago guy and records on Planet E records which is owned by Carl Craig and Paper as well, I've heard a littel bit of his stuff and it should be a good night of house :), I think it's one dude, last year he did a live set at Geisha with Recluse (sp?) and this time he's playing a DJ set.

Yeah hes from chicago and he did play a live set with Recloose at players last year. And yes it is only one guy. It should be a good night, deep etc, however in my books not a brilliant one. But if you havnt been exposed to much music and just want to dance it should be good, as long as all the tossers dont go to globe on that night.

rox your waistline to the baseline to the waistline:

I vaguley remember his set from last year in Adelaide where he played a huge span of styles in 2 hours From Pete Rock n CL Smooth, thru 70's funk right up to House & Tekno

He is definetly an Educator behind the dex

Hey Marty

I'll be going along (it's at Geisha not at the Globe). Common Factor is one guy, like the rest of the guys said. I didn't see him when he played live at Players with Recloose, but i have it on pretty good authority that Common Factor was far and away the better of the two on that night.

He's also playing at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in a few weeks....

I'm not a connoisseur of Deep House, but I like a dose of it once in a while. Then again, being of the same persuasion as Carl Craig and Stacey Pullen means that he'll probably be a lot more diverse than just playing deep house.

See ya

Common Factor is Nick Calingaert and he is from Chicago and has released material on Planet E, among other labels. His music is great - check out Dreams Of Elsewhere his compilation on Planet E. There is a story in Hype magazine on him, his future projects, etc. If you like the sounds of Detroit and Chicago then Common Factor will appeal.

Cheers

I was thinking of geisha, sorry . If the crowd is like funkenhaus than the night will be great, if its like your typical geisha crowd well I wouldnt be able to get any female I know to go.

later and hope its a good night.

Hey Dr4g0n

Has Geisha got a bit of a reputation as a den o' sleaze with your female friends?? I've not heard of this before.....

Common Factor was a bit of a disappointing experience, for mine. That might be as reflective of my relatively unsophisticated appreciation of the genre as anything else, but my "deep" friends felt pretty much the same. I'll get a review done tomorrow...

See ya

YEah Geisha is sleaze city at times, when it was under different owners they flitered out all the twats, but now it seems like they filter out all the funky ppl that love the music and have been in the scene for awhile cause they are wearing the wrong clothes. and let in all the sleaze bags. As for common factor a good producer does not always make a good dj. And vice versa. I personally had one of the best times at Funkenhaus listening to the locals. And would gladly pay again to hear that quality music on a regular basis. Well anyway lets hope the next international is of better quality....

would add my 2 lira (ie not worth much) and say yes, not impressed with their filtering on the door, but it is in northbridge and i think that works against them, much as i would like to think it shouldn't be a factor. i think there are quite a few who go there looking for a cool, 'in' club but wouldn't go to anywhere like ambar, jazzroom, or... where?

OK, I've had some sleep now so I'm ready to put together something more intelligible...

I agree with Marty in that Northbridge is, undeniably, a shithole. In fact, for the past 3 or so years, the only times I have been there for a night out has been to go to Geisha or (rarely) to an event that I've wanted to see at Redheads...

I can't really say that I've noticed a ramping up of sleazy behaviour at Geisha, but then I probably wouldn't be the target of that behaviour (damn it!!) Like I said, I have noticed that the door policy seems to have loosened somewhat from it's previous, Stalinesque levels. Particularly early on in the night, there is definitely a different element around the bar than their used to be. Which, in my opinion, is cool, so long as those ppl "fit it" in terms of their behaviour.

I actually object to strict door policies, such as the one that was previously in place at Geisha. I've never been turned away, but I've seen numerous ppl who have been told that "it's industry night tonight" or "i don't think you'll really like the music in there"... I've also seen a guy get turned away, because he "wasn't dressed appropriately". I was after him in the line, wearing 3/4 shorts and trainers (and I was let in) while he was wearing, sort of, "neat pub attire": jeans, a white shirt and shoes.

The point is, I agree that a door policy should try to filter out ppl that they think will be disruptive to the vibe that they are trying to promote. But that, imho, is definitely a behavioural thing, moreso than how someone looks (provided they are dressed "neatly").

I don't think you can reliably infer someone's character from the way they are dressed. I think that there are circumstances in which ppl should be turned away because of the way that they are dressed (eg if they are clearly dressed below the standard; or if their dress clearly indicates that they may cause trouble).

This, rather tiresome, schpiel is certainly not intended as a defence of sleazy behaviour. I just think that diversity can be encouraged within the bounds of a club's policy of wanting to attract a certain type of customer. The way a person dresses, clearly, does not always reflect their character and musical taste.

Further, dance music is still a fairly new concept for a lot of ppl, and it's still common for the "pub rocker" type to come over to dance/electronic music, if they're given a taste of it in the right atmoshpere. I reckon they should be allowed that taste, provided "they" don't look *completely* out of place and "they" behave themselves. That will help to ensure a continuance of the vibrancy of "the scene" (@!#$, I can't believe I used that term :) )

That was quite a novel. sorry!

....and I can't believe ITM has got an editing function on posts that automatically changes naughty words in posts into "*#%##"

u mean keep out people who go to steal butterfly wings? thats my personal job at globe from now on.

"no, if you come in you're not leaving with those butterflys. do you understand me? no? well there aint no chance your stepping inside this club! ouT!"

What I didnt mind about the old geisha was that if you were part of the scene/family etc or with someone like that it didnt matter what you were wearing even a garbage bag. But they would turn away ppl wearing the best suits etc cause they didnt add to the vibe. Now all the ppl that love the music are getting told to leave, and the tossers that used to try to get in to pick up chix finally bought a suit and get in cause the owners think they will spend alot of money. Cause these days its all about the green not the scene.

What perth needs is a venue to be owned by someone who cares about the music etc not just profit margins. Thats the main reason I wont go to geisha unless there is somthing on that deserves support despite the venue.

blah blah etc

Everyone who loves the music has no money to sink into a club, because they're spending it all on records :)

I'm not going to go on and say anything else, for fear that it will turn into a nonsensical rant like yesterday's post....

Hi im dragon and ive been a vinyl junkie for some time now, its a habit i cant control...

As for the Ambar, I didnt find the crowd there much better, I must admit most of the sleaze bags left Hfoundation at around 3/4. But it was still a hassle for the females. But its not a bad place, and It will take awhile to develop a following.

esoteric @jazzroom anyone?

What I believe is infinitely good about ambar in comparison to geisha is that at least you feel WELCOME when you get there.... and the tunes are always fresh and funky...

Dr4g0n: As far as I know my friends will be there every Friday, till about 3am.

There's some other dude who plays there with them and unfortunately he's totally shite, he plays hi nrg rubbish that makes me wanna puke, but my mates can't get rid of him coz he knows the owners or something... really gotta hate dat.

Dr4g0n

I will say that I would rather go to the ambar then geisha. as for the nrg dj sounds like a bit of a worry. But what can ya do, Ill try and check it out next friday, and maybe tell managment to get rid of mrnrg.. ciao
