Now my MUM always taught me that girls are flowers and all that mucho doesnt matter, and that they want fathers for there children, and they want to be loved...blah blah fuckin blah.........

Well...

I can't remember my source, but evolutionary theory suggests that men have more genetic deviation from the average than women.

(To get technical about it: If you were to graph it with "population average" in the middle of the X axis and "relatively bad genes" and "relatively good genes" on either end, you'd get a bell curve of numbers of people fitting that description, and the men's bell curve would be more spread out than that of the women's one.)

What this suggests is that, on average, there are likely to be more extreme losers...and more extreme winners...amongst men than there are amongst women.

Based on this, I don't think men defend their own gender much because they know about the large numbers of male losers, and think, yeah, that describes a good deal of men. On the other hand, they also know about the heroes, and that acts as a sort of a pat on the back that heck, some of the gender do pretty good, you know?

I think people's innate understanding of this on a social level is one possible reason as to why there's not much reaction to criticisms of the male gender.

It's just a theory, mind you. :|

Actually, I'll argue just that, to a degree - it's one from column A, one from column B on that issue - nature AND nurture (i.e. genes and environment), as they say, not just nurture...I'd even go so far as to say that studies of identical twins (i.e. people who are genetically identical) raised in different environments suggest that environment matters one hell of a lot less than most people think.

Your behaviour is in part pre-determined by your genes, but your brain is adaptive enough to respond to your environment and mold itself accordingly. It's not just one or the other. I suggest that a brain which had it's behaviour completely predetermined by genes without allowances for environmental factors would be just as stuffed as one which had it's behaviour completely molded by environment alone.

People are quite willing to accept that genes determine how your hand is built, but seem unable to accept that it determines how your brain is built too, and that this affects your behaviour and predispositions. I don't buy the idea that the brain is a blank canvas, with behaviour totally determined by environmental feedback on it...although plenty of people do, seemingly. :P
