One of the first things you should do to orientate yourself as it's a bloody big place is to study a map on the plane so you get to know the areas such as SOHO, Greenwich Village, East Village, and so on. When you get there try and jump on the Circle Line Bus Tour and the Circle Line Cruise that takes you around the island. They'll show you the whole of Manhattan in one hit so that you can see what you like and what you don't like. If you only have a week don't bother getting off Manhattan as the outer burroughs suck. Once you've done that you're ready to hit the bars (NY is a bar orientated city), but be warned, their music taste sucks ass! To find good tunes you're goning to have to look hard, but it's rewarding when you do. Get yourself a "Time Out New York" magazine for the addresses and a list of what's on. There's shitloads so have a thorough look.

Some good ones included (but these can change overnight...literally!):

Bars:
Plant (East Village)
The Hudson (inside the hotel on 58th)
The Coffee Shop (at Union Square)
Novocento (SOHO, West Broadway)
Flow (on Varrick)
Openair (on 8th between 1st and A)
Slate (great pool hall/bar)
Pravda (Lafayette between Prince + Houston?)

Best Coffee:
Gitanne (corner of Prince + Mott)
It's owned by an Aussie. Sit there on an
outside table and wait, and watch.
It's in the heart of model central. :)

Clubs:
Webster Hall
Centro-Fly
Exit
NV (Big Hip Hip club)

Party:
PS1 (in Queens)
Don't miss this but get there before opening or the queue will be about 300m long. No joke! I think it's 3pm.
This party was WICKED! Like Vibes.

Also there's the Summer Stage concerts on in Central Park every night. Check Time Out to see what's on. It pulls a crowd of about 80,000 EVERY NIGHT throughout summer!

One last thing. Shopping.
Start at the corner of Broadway + Prince and explore down
Broadway. Good place to start, "Urban Outfitters". Wicked
store. Century 21 down by where the WTC was is also good. All the locals will know these 2.

And do the Empire State on a weekday. Buy a double pass
(the ride + ticket to the top) to save queuing. Save it for you last day or second last at you'll then know what you'll be looking down on.

Have a ball and WORK THAT ACCENT!! :-D

...and you can have it all home delivered...at any time of the day or night!

Chicago is nice (if you're middle-aged), but New York is the shit. Just make sure you have a truckload of cash to spend, and I mean a TRUCKLOAD!

For instance, a beer/mixed drink is US$8 plus US$1 tip (you have to tip everyone and they expect it).
A very simple meal will be about US$15-20. A McDonald's meal will be about US$6. I went to De Niro's restaurant (yes, THAT De Niro) and had a nice dinner of steak and chips (with a risotto entree and creme brulee dessert) and a few drinks. We knew the manager and had a bottle of champagne and some french wine given to us but the bill still came to over US$200 each so be prepared.

Try and blag your way into clubs and so on. I don't think I ever paid to get in anywhere except PS1.

Clothes are a good buy and so are cameras for some reason. SoHo is wicked but expensive.

Fuck, you've made me miss it now!

That's it. I'M GOING BACK!!
