I've just read the review of the final S*P*R in Sydney and came across this paragraph......

"As another reviewer so aptly commented last week, I could go on about music styles, track names and DJ sets but that would perhaps only demonstrate my music knowledge (and/or lack of coherence later in the evening). The final SPR was more than the music alone, and testament to the fact that the Dream Team really did achieve what they set out to do – over 700 fans who attended their finale can’t be wrong."

Isn't demonstrating your musical knowledge a good thing?? Be proud of what you know about the music!!

The whole reason why I read event reviews is to find out what sort of music was played. I'm not a trainspotter and don't recognise tracks names but a general overview of the type of music played, the good and bad parts of a set, and how the music was recieved by the crowd IMO is an essential part of a review.

If I wasn't there I want to know what I missed!!

Sure, it's fantastic that the people there had a good time and that the event got a good turn out but you can say that about any party. A review that doesn't talk about the music doesn't really tell me much at all and seems like a bit of a waste of time.

Reviewers...show us your musical knowledge!!! Tell us what you heard and whether you liked it.

Does anyone else agree? Why do you read the reviews...what makes a good review?

*disclaimer* I'm not directing this at the person who wrote this particular review. And I'm not meaning to sound ungrateful to the people actually writing the reviews....afterall, I haven't written any myself!! And any review is better than not reading about an event at all :)

agree with some of your points miss apple. what grabbed my eye was this line in the review, which you have also quoted above:

"...I could go on about music styles, track names and DJ sets but that would perhaps only demonstrate my music knowledge..."

i don't think so... it tells me what sort of music was played, how particular dj's played and yeah, get specific. if someone played a funky house set, or a banging percussive techno set i like to know examples. also, if someone played "doom's night" for the billionth time, i'd like to know, even if it meant that dj went down in my estimations.

certainly track naming and the like can go too far in reviews, but for the most part finer details are good. sure, in this case, other things might have been more important, like the crowd at the finale, but it would still be nice to know what the music was like. if you're not going to mention it, however, don't try to justify it or reason it with comments like that one - it sounds like you are talking down to those who do provide lots of details about the music
