UV lighting, bigass lazers, streamers, naked bodys (oops), sculpture, reality hackers doing interactive performing arts (like John Cleese selling albatross wings to the crowd)...hmm getting off topic already...
basically
A]-weird geometric shapes bouncing about and mushrooming into psychedelic organic patterns
B]-Video clips/loops showing interesting science experiments or surfing or hot chicks or insects and stuff
C]-See no evil, nothing.
D]-A combination of the above
E]-Other.

whatever suits the music, crowd and vibe. having said that, i like:
lots of feedback.
not to many plug-in styled things
a very sparse use of live cams (this isn't a rock concert)
inventive and creative clips: file footage, oddities, etc...
plenty of effects and wierd stuff
no medical footage - too freaky (i'm looking at you morph!)

At a good driving harder gig (say dirty electro, harder edge breakbeat etc) like the crowd shots, decks shots etc (simmilar to the fuzzy breaks party stuff especially during the trick sets Kuya did that was awesome!) and some CG stuff as long as it aint wierd arse devils and medical experiments (AGREE WITH YOU THERE nexus!) and general wierd @!#$..!

Hokay, so we got a request for Pretty Swedish Pornos with few plugins, no medical experiments (hey, i might not be a gynecologist but i'll take a look anyway), video feedback and oddities.
but the insects, what about the insects???
time laps photography stuff is always cool .. but used in moderation
Have to dis agree with you nexus-6, I LUURRVE live cam feed, it great to see the crowd in action on the big crenn, specially if the image is fucked around with a little, and also footage of the DJ/MC/ACT imposed over images goes down well with me.
Live @!#$ is where it at I think.

Capturing crowd footage at gigs with a lot of lights on the crowd is okay, but at darker gigs, u need a tungsten spotty to use or something, and people only like a spotlight in the face if they are peaking on something (ie - they would even dig having a red hot poker stuck between their toes in that state). but crowd/DJ/MC footage is cool.
neffitz - are the fruit flies swedish? i'm not racist, just trying to fit in with the general flow ...
they played some porn at sublime last friday...kind wierd!

snippets of anime, i'd love to see some cuts from Princess Mononoke or something on the screens
sometime last year at sublime they had a laproscopic knee operation i think which disturbed me

yep definately snippets of anime.
how about a nice cup of coffee being poured...by a swedish pornstar? no?
hehe personally i dig things that blur the reality/fantasy things, slightly altered, rhythmic movement, and as smooth as i can get it ... thanks everyone for posting, i was just wanting to take a quick barometer reading (hmm, next time i might do a 5.000 person email survey ;P)

yeh, guess so bigfella.
also re: anime - isn't it a bit cliched to show anime and manga at dance parties? same with live cams. it's time to evolve and inovate, discover something new, be creative, blah blah blah. how about showing some clay-mation or stop motion animation stuff? there's some really great stuff out there, not just wallace and gromit: how about jason & the argonauts and all those classical mythology films; and there is some hella weird stuff coming out of russia if you can find it. how about raiding the cofa library for footage?

I love old scifi flicks..... really cheesey monsters.... bizarre contraptions.... mechanical motion.... looped visual samples. Nothing too realistic or freaky (eg Aliens) or the punters get sketchy. Stuff that makes you look twice without grimacing or freaking out. I reckon Lassie episodes could be amusing..... A-Team... KnightRider.... G-Force.... Doctor Who....Miami Vice.... Streethawk... Magnum PI....Metal Mickey....Inspector Gadget....Superfriends....Space Ghost... Wacky Races.. HeMan.... Centurions....
Sure, make your own original stuff..but it'll probably be harder to garner (NOT gurner) an audiences' attention.
as for copyright? it sucks.

I liked the footage taken from the movie 'Dune' at Winter Breaks on Sat - although I think this is the same video they played for the last party?
Esp like the bit where scantily clad women dressed like gladiators are toughing it out...hmmmm nice!

original
original
original material
live cameras are great but just ditch those bloody camera lights..!!! ergghhh!! no better way to kill the mood and feel in a room with a fu#king bright white spot or even worse still flood light... YUK!! plus, out of it punters dont like being brightly lit when not looking pretty!! :)

Yeah I guess so but with new manga comes mad new sequences that can really work in a mix :)
>clay-mation or stop motion
> animation stuff?
Strange that you mention that as I have a bit off both in my library, look carefully @ my next show :)

Yeah polarbear as much original material as possible is best, but ppl also enjoy seeing things they know and remember on the screen too.... a nice mix that entertains, challenges and stimulates the audience is essential, therein lies part of the art of VJing

Yeah I agree congo....... you need to ditch the lights and use a sweet low light cam when going into the crowd or use a colour gel on the light..... I'm actually lining up a small low light cam @ the mo to add to my rig :)
Cheers

make it as warped as it can get.... even if no one else likes it, I will :)

i'm actually thinking about doing some things ... geez, i got this new setup, it is like .... total video synth nu-style ... fully connected my G4 up to a NordLead2 techno synth via a ProTools digi001 midi connection ... learning more and more about how to play VisualLoops, Effects and Still Images like a piano player or bongo player ... beezarreee, hence i am wired on coffee at 3...er, 4 in the morning.
gonna start making some proper demo tapes now, this setup is a pretty wicked rig. Not necessarily genius star trek level, but certainly cutting edge on an international level.
concerning original, yeah i dig it. years ago samplers opened up the whole electronic music scene, and that is the same with this synth/video sample triggerer. fcuking incredible possibilities.
i like the sound of Lassie samples! haha. i find myself working with a lot of french images in preparation for Fourplay, intertwining them with my own "motion art" :) within the Adobe After Effects program etc... this is such a great time for visual artists, so much available at ur fingertips over the web(esp wi/ cable). so many references able to be made, new statements and ambiences to enjoy creating.
concerning live cams, well, i think it would be cool if a venue provided their own camera man, and free drinks for those punters brave enough to bust a move on celluloid!
beauty is a beautiful thing. flowers can be sweet, or even the innocent naive sets on early doctor who series...
but i've got this footage from madonna's "music" video ... i cant believe it was screened on national television... so raunchy .. man, i'll have to put an effect on it, talk about overt sexuality ...

cyber space tunnels - doctor who kinda stuff...
although hard to find, shots of falling off things (like facing a camera down to the ground at the top of a tall building and lowering it down really fast - feels like yer falling)
I saw that done once in a rockclimbing IMAX movie... they had the camera on the rope while some dude was abseiling down a cliff face over water. Even tho there wasnt any music I was thinking at the time this would be ace footage to use on the screen in a club.
As for crowd cams, do away with the spotlights and use CCD-pickup cameras (pretty much industry-standard) and have a nice big infra-red light. I'm not talking about the little 5-LED things u get on handycams, but a nice big hefty home made infra-red array. in a dim club u can light up the crowd like daytime.
whats with surgical stuff? trying to make us sick or something.
I'd like to see the ol' brainbug-nightmare style 50's sci-fi stuff a bit more.
