View Full Version : This will change DJing forever... Final Scratch

Final Scratch is a new technology being demonstrated by Richie Hawtin and John Aquaviva. It's a basic idea with far reaching implications...

Here's a brief explanation:

You install the Finalscratch software onto your laptop/desktop, have all your rekkids/CDs/samples on your hard drive as any form of digital file (MP3s, WAVs, AIFFs)

Cables run out from the computer into the Scratchamp interface (a small box).

There's a line running out of the Scratchamp box and into the back into the mixer on another channel.

There are special finalscratch records which have analogue information written into them (apparently they sound like a modem when played normally), the computer will hear this information and it will then play whatever sound clip you have selected in the final scratch software. The point is that you can control the sound clip completely in realtime - cueing, scratching, backspinning, pitch shift - through the final scratch record. It's completely real time.

What this means:

- Have your entire music collection on a single hard drive. Carry your laptop, Finalscratch box and two of the special 12 inches to gigs, plug it in and your away. No more lugging crates around.

- You'll be able to search your collection easily if you index your sound files logically. No more looking around in your record case in the dark.

- File swap with other DJs all over the world. I can see this causing a few problems...

Due out in January 2002 with a price estimated at around $500US

Get SCRATCH from AnalogueX

Not quite as nifty as finalscratch but it's free and damn fun to play with. Supports mono only WAV files but you can load 2 files (one beat and one scratch) scratch in realtime, adjust volume, pitch shift, turntable charachteristics (amount to scratch, and motor latency) and it even lets you export to a file

go 'wicky-wicky' to yer hearts content...

i have always wondered with computers in clubs that maybe the magnetics in the huge speakers and the loud bass could somehow wipe ur hard drive??? too bad if ur in the middle of a set and ur computer crashes. now that would suck!!!

You wouldn't want to accidentally put a scratch in your finalscratch record halfway through your set, it'd send the computer crazy, it just wouldn't know what to do with what it's hearing. Also same thing with dodgy needles and static on the record, the computer would be hearing pops and crackles and not know how to interpret it.

Much like a modem, a noisy line requires information to be resent when there's a CRC error. The thing is a modem can tell another modem to resend data, with this finalscratch idea the computer is only gonna hear it once.

I'm a little doubtful as to whether this would be an effective way of DJing, I can't see it being up to much heavy duty use.

i think with either mixman or eJay (both poor excuses for mixin software) you could get a mini turntable that plugged in to your 'puter (i think it was USB) and you could do some digi-scratchin there.

I agree with no_carrier. too many things to go wrong and not worth the price.

And now look what happened with Final Scratch... still nothing, 3 revisions of the hardware and it's still no great, users out of pocket for "software upgrades", lots of disgruntled owners/ex-owners and Ritchie Hawtin now uses Rane Scratch Live

Good thread :thumb:

For the record, Ableton is very different to Final Scratch / Scratch Live. (For those who don't know, Ableton allows you to do everything on a PC - with far greater possiblities than just using a few decks. With Final Scratch / Scratch Live you still use your decks, but you're using them to manipulate songs stored on the PC). Any of these can be awesome in the right hands.

Really though, I can't believe we're discussing this in a four year old thread. People should have accepted the idea by now. :p

now i'm not mr timothy bashing here, but i was unfortunate enough to find myself at a club around easter where he was due to play (trust me i didn't know he would be there)...none the less, he played same as this, on his laptop and i must say i couldn't tell the diff...

yer i know they are different

just thought i'd add it

its the whole " vinyl vs everything " issue i guess

i have nothin against abelton live
ive seen live acts use it and its great
i dont think its djin though

the true asthetic of vinyl is much more apealing to the punters.
I personally do think that mixing off your laptop is alot easier, and saves the back but vinyl is more "eye" appealing.

farout.. music is an evolved form of art. albeit abstract.

Its not meant to be 'easy'. Its meant to be from the heart and highly developed.

hell. if it were easy, Id call you all musicians. :/

using ableton in place of decks for a regular dj set allws more possibilities that decks alone.

effects, re-edits, adding your own sounds to a set.

for the people that use it, they know the possibilites, have you ever wondered why someone who has been djing on decks for years would look for more option to incorporate into a set? like ableton for instance.

16-Sep-05, 09:28pm
^^^ thats the point but when i hear an ableton set i can't hear the diff...not having a crack at the software, just the djs...

^^^ it's a nice idea, but without pitch control, whats the point? theres nothing you can't do there with a regular a/v cord.

and trashy, wouldn't you say not being able to hear the difference means that ableton is of a good standard, good enough to be an alternative to decks.

I think he means that a lot of djs use it solely to mix tracks rather than utilising its functionality and doing something creative..

not at all really.... yet.

some touring artists use this kind of technology, most have jumped over to rane's unit.

i think if anything CDJ's have made the main mark as an option to the 12"s of black love
