Just thought i'd let you know about a little beauty of a product that Nokia will be releasing in Aust over the next few months... The Nokia N-Gage.

http://www.amihotornot.com.au/album/photos/3160-200321193313.jpg

This little baby is a 3D multipayer gaming machine (bluetooth enabled for easy multiplayer sessions) as well as an MP3 player, a web browser and a mobile phone, all in a package roughly similar in size to a GBA!

I have not seen one of these in the flesh yet but from what i have heard about them, they are going to be big!!

Games released so far include:

Bounce
Kart Racing
Major League Baseball
Moto-GP
Pandemonium
Red Faction
Sonic N
Super Monkey Ball
Taito (old school games on one cartridge)
Tomb Raider
Virtual Board 2 (snowboarding)

More info here: http://www.n-gage.com/

Any idea how much this will cost?

I cant imagine it being too dear, as everyone that wants to buy it will be younger...

Also, there would be some plan arrangement Im sure.

From the info i can gather at the moment Nokia are aiming at a $499 or $599 sell price outright, meaing that they could be connected on a $40 odd dollar contract for free.

Thats pretty cheap...

it seems like its a well featured phone without the gaming too...

I dont know much out this MMC memory card format though.. what else uses it?

hahah sorry :( im trying to curb that.. i tend to be a bit grandstandy and its shitting me...

my logic (and yes its flawed) goes like this....

i make a fair few international flights and my gameboy adv is the grand saviour of the 16+ hrs it takes for me to get from one place to another. (metroid fusion is brill btw)

so i look at the ngauge and go "WICKED! now i dont need to take my gameboy AND all the support gear (extra games, millions of batteries, lights blaaaaaah) i just need the phone"

and then it occured to me, err, plane + phone = not good.
DAMN i said, i may as well stick to the gameboy... which sucks cos im really looking forward to these devices too, (and im sick of carrying a few kg's of batteries, damn lights) and these sorts of things are the way forward as far as it and personal technology go IMHO. (i also work in the telecoms field, specifically in 3g atm)

so in my baised viewpoint the "no transmit" feature would be invaluable, however i suppose it does go against the whole idea of connected personal device gaming in the first place... ;)

*shrug*

really? i hope your right, the link below states that the unit costs under 500 euros to build, which really doesnt bode well.

Thats the price i have been told by the national product manager here at work... he has not received 100% confirmation at the moment though.

I will let you know as soon as official pricing comes through.

My Siemens SL45 (mp3 player phone) uses MMC cards - they're pretty much the same as SD cards that are used in a lot of portable devices. You can pick up a 128MB one on ebay for about 100 bucks.

Cheers..

thats pretty much what I was after... I was just concerned that it may be some proprietry and expensive nokia format.

The question is, has anyone played with them???

I have, but telling you much more would be in breach of my NDA.

dont you just *hate* those things ;)

the telco industry is the only industry ive worked in where NDA's are like water, but everyone seems to know exactly what everyone else is up to anyway.

weird huh?

so how hard are they to code for? i do hope there will be a dev kit ;)

i dunno much about them, excpet they are awsome fun to play with, and i had teh cahne to get one in december when they are released, or a new phone now.

Sifnt new phone now =) Lub jooo nokia!!!

and you can use them on a plane, just not during take off or landing. I used mt mobile whilst on my flight from UK - Sydney when i was over ayers rock to tell my family im comming home. no harm done.

Sure there was no harm done?

You probably didnt see all the flashing lights and buzzers in the cockpit then?

The pilots saying.. "Oh shit.. that navigagation doesnt work!! Drag out the sextant so we can make it safely home and save the lives of the passengers!!"

:p :tripping:

you do realise thats a jailable offence?

and im surprised you held a connection, the amount of network traffic you wouldve been generating as you switched from on base station to another (very rapidly) wouldve been rather irritating for telstras network engineers

welll i sent a single SMS, and it seemed all good.

Its like the instructional saftey video told us NOT to use our discmans or cameras or stufff like that, but the cabin staff told me yeah its ok you can film out the window, and yeah, listen to your mp3 player thats cool.

you can happily use electronic devices when the plane is in level flight.. i regularly use a gameboy and a discman on intl flights... just not during takeoff/landing..

just as long as its not a transmitting device... like your phone :)

as long as they are small. it will probably be the size of a gameboy:meh: !
and if you can hook up one of these camera things on them, that would be good.
i know what i want for my birthday;)
