i am starting to get carpal tunnnel syndrome or something from all this mouse-clicking, dvt from sitting at a computer for 8 hrs+ a day, minor radiation from the screen, and not to mention sore eyes.
Just how dangerous is this?

Can't say how dangerous it would be without knowing what you are running in your office.
For example if you are using a CRT monitor it is giving off a lot more radiation than if you are using a TFT (Flat panel).
If you are anything like me you would have made sure that your work supplies you with a top quality high backed chair, a footrest, TFT monitors (i love my 18" Samsung) as well as allowing you time away from your desk in a day to stretch and just simply to focus on things that aren't your computer monitor.
...hell, my work even pays for two masseurs to come in once a month to give us 20 minute neck / back / arm / hand massages in an effort to reduce office injuries!

for me, the screen's refresh rate is really important to stop headache/eyestrain. first thing i do at a new job is make sure the monitor is set to 85hz or greater. the default 60hz is like torture (for some people incl me). half of my friends cannot tell the difference though.

totally agree on the monitor refresh, I can't hack it lower than 85.
60hz makes my eyes bleed.

i had thought the bone collector was one of the most disturbing things i had seen, then last night watched a program 'plastic surgery ruined my life'
these people are freaks! If you went to your consult with your surgeon about your leg op and he kept talking about your stomach surely you wouldn't just go under the anaesthetic thinking oh well see what happens?
so her belly button turned black, and had to be removed, the septic stuff went down into her stomach and she now has all this scarring and stuff

eh? did someone change the title of this thread? it was suposed to be a tongue-in-cheek comment on sitting at my desk all day and night, not just carpal tunnel thingy
An old flatmate of mine had to go on workers comp for 18 month because of carpal tunnel. He'll never be able to work in an office again...
My mum had carpal tunnels syndrome.. She had both wrists operated on, one at a time because each wrists took six weeks to heal..
I don't think it's dangerous n per se.. more just a painful condtion to have to live with...

Agreed. 60Hz is torture. I have a two-monitor desktop - the primary is a dell 19" that's refreshing at a much more comfortable rate than the piece of shit 17" sitting next to it. That one gives me black spots in the corner of my left eye :(
Take regular breaks, strech your hands and arms, focus on something other than the computer. I had that problem and had to take time off, so now I get up and walk around at least every half hour..problem solved.

Here I am sick today and skanking online and I still manage to stumble into the medical topics.........:tripping:
Carpal results from compression of the medium nerve in the carpal tunnel, with pain and burning or tingling parathesias in the fingers and hand and sometimes extending to the elbow, and funnily this disorder is most commonly found in MIDDLE aged women.....pertaining to the increased risk of osteoporosis I would imagine.......but somehow I imagine that with these brilliant generations of technology, the age of incidence will lower.....
Excessive wrists movements, arthritis, hypertrophy (Overgrowth) of the bone and connective tissue that is associated with Acromegaly-Abnormal enlargement of the skeleton in extremeties (Nose, jaws, hands and feet) and generalised swelling of the wrist (associated with trauma) can produce the carpal tunnel syndrome.............in a nutshell.......
Treatment is usually conservative, except in severe cases where surgical resection of the carpal ligament is beneficial.......I have seen this surgery a few times on my forrages through the public system......but the best conservative treatment that you could do for it is splinting the wrist to immobilise it for a few weeks until the irritation of the medium nerve has settled/healed........Good Luck!............;D

.....Hell, if the public hospital sector wanted to bring in people to massage all the nurses crippled and problematic ridden backs, the system would go under in a single shift, alot more so than it is right now........ .......... ...........
