What's the most popular style of dance music in Adelaide? Is it hard house country or what? How does tehcno fair?

and to ask another question -- hmc is obviously the best known dj from adelaide in the rest of the country. from al i've heard over the years, my impression is that he would be a deity in his home town. is this true, or is that just me getting carried away?

Pretty much. Up until I was a resident of Adelaide until just over 2 years ago, he was the head of any line up.

Unfortunately, Adelaide wasn't able to hold onto it's 'underground' crown as it did through the early to mid 90's, and now since kids are being force fed hard house cheddar. HMC whilst still being considered a god, has no power with the younger set as they have no desire to forgo their entry level music. As opposed to 10 years ago or so, when parties consisted of multiple styles and HMC would be one who would provide techno, now (as with most shows everywhere) the styles are laid out singularly, so the access is not available, or wanted - dare I say it.

I Dont think that is entirely true Royal, Most of the big Parties still have a variety of Styles played at them.

HMC has lost alot of following in the rave scene since he went to a much funkier almost Naked Music style and as such lost what i would call the "Underground" (although i hate this term as all parties are basically mainstream) following.

HMC tends to play at alot of the shall we say cooler venues where alot of the people seem to be their just to be scene.

Most big events in Adelaide have 3 rooms atleat one Being DnB one being Nu-Nrg/Hard House and one being techno or Deep house.

However Hard House/Nrg would be the most popular and Adelaide continues to draw the best producers and Dj's from around the world with Karim, RR Fierce and Chris C being regular visitors, these provide quality Hard House not the bouncy rubbish the East Coast seem to be fans of (read: Fergie, Tidy Boys, Lisa Lashes etc)

After that DnB would have the next biggest following and is a major feature at all the big parties.

Techno is somewhat lacking although Red Light District put on good shows and the big names such as Mills, Hawtin and Speedy J will draw big crowds. Adelaide also has some great techno producers in Cycloid, Dj Bold (Vast recordings) and of course HMC (who i have lost interest in admitedlly)

That is my take on our scene as it is

Variety of styles perhaps, but not in the same room as I was eluding to.

However when you have the techno, well I don't know that it should be called techno. There's a few djs bandying about the techno term when they're playing the more techy edge of progressive trance, and that's not good for anyone.

where are these techno/deep house rooms you speak of? the techno is most often hard and fast cheesy rubbish that is bundled in with the nu-nrg room!

Well the last techno room was at Strawberry Fields i think and was empty basically all night, the Deep House rooms i was talking about is more like a House room with a deep house set from Brendon thrown in.

I used the term Deep House as the House played tends not to be overly Cheesy :)

The last quality Tekno International i saw at a rave (having missed Stardust)and not referring to the more banging style of tekno would be Stacey Pullen at the Planet

Guys .. NRG is taking over the world .. i'm quite proud to say that we are slowly phasing out techno at raves (unless of course there is a special act) ..

trance is dead .. hard house is massive .. if ya dont like it move ..

We in Adelaide have one of the strongest hard hose scene's in Australia and all involved are extremely proud of that !

hoover long and prosper

why would you be proud to be phasing out techno? it's not like it's a really bad thing. be proud that you have a great scene, but going beyond that with this vindictive attitude just makes you look arrogant. let all styles have their space.

Oddy thrives on looking arrogant :)

He does however put on the biggest parties so as such can dictate to an extent what gets played.

Their is another promoter in Town (Red Light District) who put on Tekno parties so all scenes in Adelaide are covered its then personal choice where you head.

HMC has also gotten a bit introverted with his musical sytle IMHO. In the last 18 months I have seen him play a few times and only once have I been impressed. This set happened to be right after Jeff Mills last year when he IMHO tore Mills' set to pieces.

The rest of the sets I have seen him play have consisted of latin influnced deep house and laid back tech house.....and this has really annoyed me. I know he is capable of so much more.

HMC seems to have pulled himself off of the main stage at the parties and retreatred to some of the smaller funkier clubs around adelaide where he dabbles in all sorts of more down tempo and deep tracks during his marathon 4 hr sets that seem the norm rther than the exception these days.

Now please don't take any of this as critism of the man, I have deep respect for HMC and what he has done for the Adelaide Dance music scene(LSD and Phreakin got me into the scene in the first place). I think what has happened is that HMC has matured and moved onto other things (producing) and other styles other than those that appeal to me. That is not a bad thing. I am probably just dissapointed I wasnt around when HMC was banging it out for the Ravers at parties!

Red light district parties are nowhere near as prolific either.
