ipai opai. omeko. nippon rules. been a couple of years ago, and heading back this october. could tell you the names of some fantastic clubs in osaka and tokyo, but due to the fact that they are fantastic you wont be hearing broken beats at them, so guess you wouldn't be interested in the names. have a blast regardless.

That's complete bollocks. I have been there twice and I know people that I have been back every year for the past 6 or 7 years.

for a hostel in osaka try the Ryo-kuchi-koen hattori youth hostel. it's on the main osaka midosuji line and is cheap.

roppongi was stacks of fun when i went last year..
its a party every night....
go check out the record stores scattered throughout shibuya in tokyo. there are plenty of street mags and flyers around with enough english on them to understand so you'll find what you're looking for.
Went there in 2001, it was a blast! The youth hostel i stayed in in osaka was called the nagai park youth hostel its built into the side of a big stadium which is situated in a lovely park. As for electronics there is only one place AKIHABARA in tokyo it rules look it up;D

I'd recommend Shibuya, which is probably the nightclub heart of tokyo. And the public park there is populated by immaculately clad goths, celeb impersonators etc so great eye candy as well.
But I found the best way to discover japan (as any foreign country) was to just lose yourself on random adventures.

Lonely Planet is good, but word of mouth is way better, cheers people!
Another question. For those whos been to Japan, did you backpack around? if so, how'd you find it? the cost, the people, availibility wise....

roppongi for soho style dabauch,
its good for nasty strip clubs/hostess clubs/karaoke clubs.
altho the karaoke clubs do have nice clean benches for lining stuff up on,
mushrooms are also cheap and legal....
but if you want a classy experience just go on down to shibuya

While you're there, look out for the Beer vending machines!!!
They're awesome!
Especially the way they squirt the foam on top of a full glass of flat beer.

Hi there, I have lived in Japan for a number of years off and on and am involved in the music industry there. Possum is right the best two links are above. Theres plenty of accommodation and club stuff in there. If you want to stay in Shinjuku, Tokyo heres a hotel that i would recommend and its one of the cheapest you will find

If you want to know more about my services as a music agent there please let me know. I am now also based part-time in Brisbane and have international experience in MTV's (music video) production as director.

I am heading there in Feb 2005, and need some help.
Should I stay in Shinjuku or Shibuya? Which is more fun? Food? Better Accommodation? I have heard good things about both, but can't decide, and need advice from someone who has actually been there....
Thanx

i was there just over a month ago. i think shibuya is more younger people orientated, and a bit more eccentric and ahppening than shinjuku. A good idea is to get one of those eyewitness travel guides to Japan, heaps of information in them thats really useful. Also if you get a chance learn some basic Japanese, like how muhc is this, can i have one of these etc. YOu can get by with most things with a few simple phrases and pointing at things you want to buy or what not. Everyone is really polite over there, the Japanese must think they've landed in hell when they come to Australia in comparison to there hahaha.
And yeh the best way to look around is just basically get lost and walk around etc. Another good idea is to get a business card or write down the name of where ur staying on a card in english and japanese so if worst comes to worst you can hop in a taxi and get taken home.
you cant really go wrong witht eh food over there, everything is really fresh. the worst meal i had there was at McDonalds, think of a big mac with a wasabi sauce. i didnt know that was what i was getting until i ate it and goddamn thats the nastiest burger ive ever had.
