View Full Version : Yoga/Pilates
I've been thinking on taking up either Yoga or Pilates.
Is anyone here doing either? If so, what are your thoughts about it?

A friend of mine does Chakra.
She sets up workshops mainly at festivals and at fair's in country towns all over the north coast of NSW.

I'm nearing the end of a 10 week pilates matt class and have found it really enjoyable. I took the class to help improve my posture as I get a lot of headaches from slouching at the computer all day.
Have seen a great improvement over the last few weeks and am thinking of signing up for another 10 week advanced course after the beginners one is done.
A lot of the moves and positions are similar to yoga I believe, although I have never done a course of yoga - just the one class. Couldn't really take it too seriously though as the guy who took the class was a dead ringer for the dude out of the Nestle yummmm ads, and "downward dog" gave me the giggles :P
I guess it depends on what you are hoping to get out of it. My sister has been doing yoga for almost 4 years and enjoys it as for her it is about the relaxation and meditation aspects, while my goals from pilates are about fitness and posture.

mat pilaties sessions will probably leaqve you feeling a bit better, bit more energry, bit more flexible etc.
but if you are actually willing to coughup the $ and head to a proper pilaties studio with all the equipment and stick at it, then you are likely to see some pretty good results.
sting does ashanga (spell?) - i'm planning on doing some of the stretching / core ab work later in life as i mellow, hope its still trendy then.
myself and debz went to our first pilates class last week :) its so much fun, i loved all the stretching u do, u don't realize how much u work out till u feel the pain the next day :p
Were going back this week ;D
Ive just signed up to a new gym...
They have a pilates studio in there... Shame it doesnt open until the 1st of sept though... Ill tell you all about how good it is in October :)
Im just nearing the end of a 10 week pilates course as well and i am really enjoying it. Its similar to yoga but more strenous and i've found its great for toning the stomach and butt.
Ive also done about 6 months of yoga, i think iyengar, where you use straps, blocks and bolsters. I;ve found yoga to focus more on relaxation and meditation and being able to hold the poses. Inversions (head/shoulder/handstands) are fun.
So i guess it depends what your looking to get out of it
i actually have just purchased some pilate dvds i got sucked in big time on an imfomercial!! windsor pilates it is.....i shall be starting 2mozo i am goin to do them every morning b4 work.....i will let yaz know how i go ;D
looking forward to toning & having better posture :)

I do both and I absolutely love both of them! Yoga is unreal as you feel so incredibly relaxed afterwards, and I would probably rate pilates as using slightly higher energy levels.
They're both great for building strength in muscles, stretching and relaxing and I would highly recommend both of them!

There are pilates and yoga classes at my gym and i do them on and off- i actually prefer cardio. There are also Body Balance classes which is like a combination of the two. I find pilates to be more strenuous and tiring, you really feel it in ur legs and tummy the next day!! Yoga is somewhat slower paced and relaxing, with slower, broader movements.
they're good for unwinding after a long day or after a hard workout.. but yoga makes me so sleepy!

I do both yoga and pilates to increase my flexibility. The more you work, the better results you will get.

Bumba, i go to Vital Fitness @ Pennant Hills
I do Pilates, and i love it!!
I started early this year becuase my back was a bit fucked from having lumber puncture ( :-* ) and it really helped!
well i went to my first yoga class today, and it was fab ;D
im extremely unflexible, i hurt in places i didnt know existed, but i felt so good afterwards, so calm and peaceful
i almost went astral travelling during the meditation at the end
im gonna try to go to as many classes as i can ;D
im a little against Pilates as its the latest buzz-word in fitness fashion
before was tae bo etc etc
Yoga is based on some pretty healthy ideals, but be aware that "real" Yoga is a religious and spiritual thing, of which you wont find in Australia nor "should" you, as i dont think i can imagine "real" Yoga fitting into any of our lifestyles
so the question is, which "bastardised" version of Yoga can you tolerate.
as i grew up in Tae Kwon Do tournaments and of course suffered the innevitable 'career-ending' injury i had to turn to passive martial arts.....
TAI CHI!
very very positive discipline, SOOOO perfect for our lifestyles.... it slows you down, gives you patience, strengthens the joints and the like
but yeah, Yoga is rocking too. just dont take any of that "scientific proof that vergetarianism is natural for humans" stuff seriously, and all that "pouring water up your nose" and the MOST stupidest in my eyes, the "cloth down your stomach, pull it up" cleanse...
basic Yoga will rock your world though :) just erm... dont eat gassy food before hand. you will notice at yoga classy that people.... well yeah, you get it.
peace....
